Dr. Terry Stoops, John Locke Foundation director of education studies, explains why Watauga County's new high school — the most expensive in North Carolina history at $79.5 million — should lead to questions about county commissioners' efforts to secure a local sales-tax increase with an Aug. 31, 2010, referendum. The week of Monday August 2nd through Saturday August 7th, 2010 marks the first ever Free School Supplies Event at Frank Myers Auto Maxx, a used car dealership located at 4200 N. Patterson Avenue in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. According to owner Tracy Myers, his business will be using the free school supplies event as a way to give back to a community that has supported his family's business over the years. "We'll have a limited supply of free school supplies for the kids," Myers said. "When we run out, that's it. There won't be any more free school supplies until next year. So I'm encouraging everyone to arrive as early as possible. I'd hate for anyone to miss out." Anyone in Winston-Salem can get the free school supplies. No purchase necessary. Raleigh, NC - The first tax under Obamacare is a 10% sales tax on indoor tanning salons. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act required tanning salons to start collecting the tax on July 1st. However, business owners across the country are unsure of details related to the tax, because the IRS released its rules only weeks before the deadline.
Dr. Roy Cordato, John Locke Foundation vice president for research and resident scholar, says NC legislators should change their approach to sales tax reform. Learn more here: www.johnlocke.org Video courtesy of CarolinaJournal.tv.

Last month's biggest busybody was the New York politician who's waging a war on salt. This month's top honors could have gone to the US senator who wants to block betting on box office sales or the Silicon Valley pol who yanked toys from kids' meals. But the Nanny of the Month goes to the North Carolina cop who clamped down on tax day protestors' right to carry flags and signs because he feared Old Glory might be used as a weapon. (Hey, we can't have those tea party loons goring people with flag poles!) Presenting Reason.tv's Nanny of the Month for April 2010: State Capitol Police Chief Scott Hunter! Candidates debate NC taxes including the new taxes in the 2009-2010 state budget.
I'm running for NC House of Representatives because I believe the people of the Sixth District deserve an alternative to what we have been getting from Raleigh - 11.9 % unemployment, one of the highest sales tax rates in the country, unsustainable state budget increases, political corruption, among other concerns. The state legislature is controlled by a handful of Democrats who have lost touch with the people. Raising taxes by a billion dollars in the middle of a recession when so many people are hurting illustrates just how much they have lost touch.
Listen to some of the upcoming goals, priorities and strategies the county commissioners came up with for Cumberland County.
Dr. Michael Sanera, John Locke Foundation research director, explains that North Carolina voters have rejected consistently proposed sales tax increases county commissioners have placed on the ballot across the state. Raleigh, NC - Local leaders in Raleigh held a meeting Thursday to inform the public about ways to build a mass transit system in the Triangle. There is no cohesive plan right now, but local planning groups are working on one. A lynchpin will be paying for any plan. North Carolina allowed communities in the Triangle to ask for voters to approve a half cent sales tax. Money from the tax would help pay for a portion of a transit system's construction.

From WGHP: Beginning Tuesday, shoppers in North Carolina will pay an additional 1 percent in state sales tax as a result of a temporary measure approved by the General Assembly this summer. At the same time, cigarettes, beer, wine and liquor will have higher excise taxes, all of which are likely to be passed on to retail buyers. Lawmakers and Gov. Beverly Perdue agreed to raise these taxes in early August as part of a $991 million package... Click here for the video from WGHP... www.myfox8.com

Earlier in the meeting, a representative from SEANC (State Employees Association of NC) griped that Blue Cross/Blue Sheild has 97% of the NC insurance market. The reason why BC/BS has a monopoly on health insurance in NC is because state law forbids sales and purchases of insurance across state lines. Citizens of NC cannot choose to purchase cheaper, more competitive insurance policies from companies based in other states. Our government is already meddling in our choices and not in a way that benefits the people. The speaker in this video addresses his questions as to why there are no options for free market solutions such as: 1. Allowing us to purchase cheaper, more competitive insurance across state lines? 2. Why can't we buy a personal policy and get the same tax breaks an employer gets on corporate purchase of insurance? 3. How come I can't have a health savings account without a lot of strings attached, government regulations and restrictions when I ought to be able to save for my health care? Etheridge responds with a reference to Bernie Madoff. No, seriously...Bernie Madoff came up several times during the evening in response to questions as the reason why the free market and decreased regulations does not work. Mr. Etheridge, Harry Markopolos alerted the Securities and Exchange Commission five times over years that Madoff's "hedge fund" was a huge ponzi fraud scheme. The SEC did nothing more than forward the case to the NY office which, after 11 months, closed ...
