FOR NEDA reveals the true story of Neda Agha-Soltan, who became another tragic casualty of Iran's violent crackdown on post-election protests on June 20, 2009. Unlike many unknown victims, however, she instantly became an international symbol of the struggle: Within hours of Agha-Soltan's death, cell phone photographs of her blood-stained face were held aloft by crowds protesting in Tehran and across the world. With exclusive access to her family inside Iran, the documentary goes to the heart of who Neda was and what she stood for, illuminating the larger Iranian struggle for democratic freedoms through her powerful story. Directed by Antony Thomas.

The footage of the death of Neda Agha-Soltan drew international attention after she was killed during the 2009 Iranian election protests. Her death was captured on video by bystanders and broadcast over the Internet and the video became a rallying point for the reformist opposition. Nedā (ندا) is a word used in Persian to mean "voice", "calling," or "divine message," and she has been referred to as the "voice of Iran." She was filmed as she lay dying on the street. Her death thus became iconic in the struggle of Iranian protesters against what they said was the fraudulent election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

" A Bullet gave her the kiss of eternal life ." "I am alive," Neda said to her sister in a dream. Neda's mother : "I want to say that the moment that bothers me the most -- that bothers me terribly -- is the moment Neda got shot. That's because Neda was an extremely brave person. Ever since she was a child, she was brave and fearless. So that moment when she got shot, I saw it in the video, she couldn't believe it -- that she had taken a bullet. So much so that she takes a look at her body. And when she sees she's been shot, she takes a few steps backwards and then falls. The only words she managed to utter was: 'Teacher, I'm burning.' And people said she passed within 44 seconds." The mother visits Neda's grave every Friday. She's heartened that even now, throngs of people still greet her -- "It's as though she just passed away." She carries with her a painting of her smiling daughter that she received as a gift. "People go and write on her grave in red ink the word 'martyr,'" she said, "and then the authorities go and wipe it off." She said her daughter's killer is still at large, but she's confident the person will be found and tried in court. "I am waiting for that day." "I saw Neda as a martyr from the start. Neda was a martyr for her homeland." A 'caring' debater Long before Neda became a household name, she was a "very excited girl" who always had answers for everything. A Poem for Neda (Elections in Iran): By Dr. Rafey Habib Neda. Sweet voice, Of freedom, unborn. Your state totters. A colour revolution. Green, for life, Of reason, faith; Red for blood, The price you paid. And you have shown Your colour, you Whose voices rise Above your people Who cast your black sky Over all voices; Who hide behind Batons, water, tear-gas; Who cringe Behind your flag. Tears will find you out. And you too, show Your colour, who flirt With freedoms name; Who smile unshamed As tyrants old or new Play your cards for you. Tears will blind your smiles. You who love Your daughters, sons, Let the green of earth be Your colour: Let your love give birth To the Islam which your poets dreamed. Let your voice, which sang Before, of golden Persia, In Saadi, Hafez, Rumi, Now return, to sing Our future. Let your sweet voice Sing from the cold earth Of sweet democracy Buried in its birth. Dreaming to be Born. Daughter, sweet voice Of the new Iran: Neda. Filmed by: Chris Barrett Special thanks: Elizabeth Licorish About Neda Agha-Soltan: The death of Neda Agha-Soltan drew international attention when her shooting, during the 2009 Iranian election protests, was captured on video by bystanders and broadcast over the internet.[6] The video quickly became a rallying point for the reformist opposition. From CNN: "That Twitter post was from a man who said he is a guitarist from Nashville, Tennessee" CNN source: www.cnn.com "SONG FOR NEDA" Her name is Neda Agha-Soltan, she died on June 20, 2009 on the streets of Tehran, from an angry bullet to the chest. Like the rest of the world, I will never forget seeing her take those final breaths, forever seared into mine and all of humanities memory. I saw her death, moments after it was posted on Twitter and knew this was a defining moment for us all. In every corner of the world we all want to be heard, loved and respected. Neda just wanted to be heard, she wanted her vote to matter and paid with her life for the hopeful dawn of a new day. In a different place and time it could have easily been you or I, our brother or sister but that day it was Neda. Her name means "voice", "calling" or "divine message" in Persian and though that bullet has taken Neda away, her voice will never be silenced. I wrote "Song For Neda" in memory of her but this is really Neda's song.... Greg V. 6.25.09
Who killed Neda Agha Soltan ?!!! Iran Election Protest
Neda The Divine Calling 'Angel of Freedom' Neda Agha Soltan; She is a Symbol, a Meaning, a Movement. After killing of Neda Agah Soltan by the Iranian paramilitary group, I think the West will never look the same way again towards Iran. Now we will have to differentiate between the regime and the people of Iran in our foreign policy. Neda changed the stereotype way the West look to women in the Middle East societies. She is the new face of women not only in Iran, but also in the Middle East. We are not mourning her, but celebrating her. Neda couldnt stand the injustice; she simply wished to see her vote counted. Regardless to the outcomes or the results of the current situation, Iranians already Won. They won the attention, the sympathy, and the respect of the entire World. The Iranian regime exploited the judicial institutions and used the elections to take a role in notorious play to reinforce its claim to a ceremonial legal legitimacy. However, the regime knows that rule-of-law can be a double-edged sword that can undermine the regime ability to have full control on the country. And here we are now; it will never be the same again in Iran. Its too late to step back or turn time and events around. The divine is calling for freedom, and Neda, Iran Angels of Freedom, is watching from above.

Although Ms. Agha-Soltan, whom her relatives described as unpolitical, was killed on a quiet street and was not participating in any political rally when she was shot, she became an instant symbol of the anti-government movement when a video of her death was shared on social networking sites. Only scraps of information are known about Ms. Agha-Soltan. Her friends and relatives were mostly afraid to speak, and the government broke up public attempts to mourn her. She studied philosophy and took underground singing lessons - women are barred from singing publicly in Iran. Her name means voice in Persian, and many are now calling her the voice of Iran. Her fiancé, Caspian Makan, contributed to a Persian Wikipedia entry. He said she never supported any particular presidential candidate. "She wanted freedom, freedom for everybody," the entry ...
Dedicated 2 Neda Agha Soltan & other Angels of Freedom. Iranian Officials have removed any material commemorating the 27-year-old student that had been erected near her home by sympathizers in the Iranian capital. The new generation interacts daily with people from all over the world. They see what it is like to live in a free society and to know the power of a fair and just Vote. They crave the freedom to choose their own government and they detest oppression, hatred, and war in any form. The new generation of Iran has finally come of age. Over 70% of the population of Iran is under age 30. They are thinkers. They are educated. They are aware of their world. And they are demanding freedom. A government which murders its own children can not stand. Look into Nedas eyes as she looks back at you. As she sees the face of death and her father cries out for her life. Let the rage inside of you build. Then take that emotion and allow it to motivate you to push for change. Infiltrate the unjust government. Find ways to make the change happen. Neda is the face of this revolution. It is no coincidence that her name means the call or the voice. Her face is the voice which calls out to all of you. The time for CHANGE has come. In memory of Neda Agha Soltan. an Iranian woman whose killing on 20th June 2009, allegedly by Basij militia during the Iranian election protests, Neda was the middle child and only daughter of a family of three children. Her father is a civil servant and her mother is a homemaker. She studied islamic philosophy at Azad University and worked at a travel agency. She studied Turkish, hoping it would someday aid her as a guide for foreign tours. She enjoyed traveling, and had visited Dubai, Thailand and Turkey. It was in Turkey, two months prior to her death, that she met her fiancé, 37 year old Caspian Makan, who worked as a photojournalist in Tehran.Neda studied singing privately and had studied the violin. She had an as-yet-undelivered piano on order at the time of her death. In discussions with journalists, Makan maintained that Neda was not very political and had not supported any particular candidate in the 2009 Iran elections. Friends of Neda described her as a relatively apolitical person, but that anger over the election results prompted her to join the protest. Her music teacher, Hamid Panahi, who was accompanying Neda during the protest and can be seen on the video trying to comfort the dying woman, told the media: "She couldn't stand the injustice of it." Panahi went on to state: "All she wanted was the proper vote of the people to be counted. She wanted to show with her presence that, 'I'm here, I also voted, and my vote wasn't counted'. It was a very peaceful act ...
