This is a narrative of what Stinging Nettles look like here on the Western side of Washington state. I am told there are a number of varities, some capable of stinging more than others. The ones pictured here can sting for a long time--if you brush up against one vigorously in a place where your skin is fairly thin (back of the hands, neck, arms) the sting can last up to 6 hours and is felt instantly. The larger the plant--the larger (and probably more) the stingers. The lower stalk produces the most sting, the leaves somewhat less as you go up. I also think that nettles that are next to a good water supply sting more than those that are in a little dryer area. (They will always be close to water). Watch out, in this region of Washington nettles can grow over 7 or 8 feet high! This is all from the voice of experience!!
