NEW YORK - JUNE 11: Kevin Martin, 12, with his mother, Linda Martin, 43, and father, Tim Martin, 55, at their family home on June 11, 2010 in New Rochelle, New York City. Twelve-year-old Kevin Martin is one of only five people in the world believed to be living with the twin conditions of dwarfism and neurofibromatosis (NF), a condition which causes tumours to grow anywhere on his body. As well as his dwarfism, which Kevin sees as his primary condition, he currently has three benign tumours. One is a pea sized lump in his brain, another is in his lung and the third is the size of a banana and stretches from the top of his chest to his jawline. As the years go by there is a one in ten chance that any of the tumours will develop into full blown cancer.

We made this video in honor of our little boy Dylan. This is daddy's favorite song and he picked it just for you bud :) Dylan is 8 years old and has Neurofibromatosis also known as NF1. In the past he has suffered significant visual losses such as his depth perception, binocular and peripheral vision. He has had surgery for this but they were unable to restore his vision. He will require 2-3 more surgeries just to maintain alignment. Most recently he lost all the useful hearing on the right side. These are all nerve related and permenant. He struggles daily to over come many obstacles including muscular, nutritional and neurological issues as well. Some of those issues are causing structural problems. He has scapular winging in both shoulders causing his chest wall to sink in and become deformed. Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow any where at any time and can cause brain tumors, deafness, bone deformaties, facial disfigurement, learning disabillities and cancer. There is no predictable course and there is no cure.

---++PLEASE READ++---NF is not the "Elephant Man's Disease," although it was at one time believed to be. Scientists now believe that John Merrick, the so-called "Elephant Man," had Proteus Syndrome, an entirely different disorder. Neurofibromatosis(pronounced noor-oh-fahy-broh-muh-toh-sis) - encompasses a set of distinct genetic disorders that causes tumors to grow along various types of nerves. NF can also affect the development of non-nervous tissues such as bones and skin. Neurofibromatosis causes tumors to grow anywhere on or in the body. Types Of Neurofibromatosis Neurofibromatosis (NF) has been classified into three distinct types: NF1, NF2 and Schwannomatosis. Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1): also known as von Recklinghausen NF or Peripheral NF. Occurring in 1:3000 births, web characterized by multiple cafe-au-lait spots and neurofibromas on or under the skin. Enlargement and deformation of bones and curvature of the spine (scoliosis) may also occur. Occasionally, tumors may develop in the brain, on cranial nerves, or on the spinal cord. About 50% of people with NF also have learning disabilities. Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2): also known as Bilateral Acoustic NF (BAN), is much rarer occurring in 1:25000 births. NF2 is characterized by multiple tumors on the cranial and spinal nerves, and by other lesions of the brain and spinal cord. Tumors affecting both of the auditory nerves are the hallmark. Hearing loss beginning in the teens or early twenties is generally the first ...
