Mike Flynn, one-time government affairs director for Reason Foundation, the nonprofit that publishes Reason.tv, is the editor of Big Government, the latest site from Andrew Breitbart's new media empire. biggovernment.com Big Government focuses on the dirty side of politics, which means they've got enough material to last them for centuries. The site made a huge splash be releasing (as recently as yesterday) a series of guerilla videos in which members of ACORN, the community organization that got tons of public money, apparently helped a fake pimp and prostitute figure out how to set up operations. Big Government followed that up with transcripts from a controversial teleconference between White House folks and artists that led to the resignation of the National Endowmen of the Arts director of communications. In October, Michael C. Moynihan sat down with Flynn to talk about the site's early success, long-range game plan, and how new media is changing politics in ways that we've only just started to understand. Approximately 8.20 minutes. Shot by Dan Hayes and Meredith Bragg; edited by Dan Hayes. For more videos and downloadable versions of this vid, go to http

The "Roundtable" of "This Week" discusses the White House's war with Fox News Channel. Referring to comments made by White House Communications Director Anita Dunn, George Will says that Fox News might be "opinion journalism," but that also "describes The New York Times, and certainly MSNBC." Will also tells George Stephanopoulos that there is "a bullying aspect" in the Obama administration's tactics toward the cable network. Laura Ingraham pointed out that when "an esteemed journalist" in Charles Gibson had no clue about the ACORN scandal, there was "a collective gasp across the United States." "Every administration tries to manipulate the news media," comments Cynthia Tucker, before giving an example from the Bush administration propping other journalists. Says Bloomberg's Al Hunt: "I must say I'm amused that Karl Rove is shocked that they would go after the press."
In light of the right wing sniping at President Obama for holding a lunch with journalists at the White House as well as Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann from MSNBC, Maddow explains that not only did the Bush White House freeze out The New York Times as well as MSNBC, but she also told of why she never got an invite to "talk radio meetings" during the Bush administration. Olbermann also joins Maddow to discuss the matter, calling right-wing critics of the lunch "walking examples of... post-traumatic stress disorder." "It is pot and kettle," said Olbermann, calling Fox News' response to the lunch "stunning" as well as confounding and silly and stupid." Olbermann then broke down Fox News' journalism tactics, calling it "a way to sort of bring in crap through the side door," he said.

On April 29, 2006, American comedian Stephen Colbert appeared as the featured entertainer at the 2006 White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, which was held in Washington, DC, at the Hilton Washington hotel. Colbert's performance consisted of a 16-minute podium speech and a 7-minute video presentation, which were broadcast live across the United States on cable television networks C-SPAN and MSNBC. Standing a few feet from US President George W. Bush—in front of an audience of celebrities, politicians, and members of the White House Press Corps—Colbert delivered a controversial, searing routine targeting the president and the media. Cable television personality Colbert spoke in the persona of the character he plays on Comedy Central's popular The Colbert Report, a parody of a conservative pundit in the fashion of Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity. Colbert's performance quickly became an Internet and media sensation. Subsequent coverage has seen commentators debate the stand-alone humor content of Colbert's performance, the political nature of his remarks, and whether there was an intentional cover-up by the media in the reporting on the routine. Time's James Poniewozik noted that "days after Stephen Colbert performed at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, this has become the political-cultural touchstone issue of 2006—like whether you drive a hybrid or use the term 'freedom fries'." Following this, Colbert continued his mock defense of Bush by satirizing Bush's photo ops aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, at the site of the collapsed World Trade Center, and in cities devastated by Hurricane Katrina: I stand by this man. I stand by this man because he stands for things. Not only for things, he stands on things. Things like aircraft carriers, and rubble, and recently flooded city squares. And that sends a strong message: that no matter what happens to America, she will always rebound—with the most powerfully staged photo ops in the world." Colbert then wrapped up the portion of his monologue specifically ...

Tensions boil over as the White House accuses Fox News of a "disregard for the facts." - Oct. 1, 2009 - In the past few months, Fox News' critical coverage of the Obama administration has been the subject of scornful scrutiny by left-leaning pundits and political satirists. But now the White House appears to be willing to get dirt on its own hands, jumping into the fray by blasting the network's "disregard for facts" in a post on the official White House blog. Written by White House Online Programs Director Jesse Lee, the post takes issue with Fox News' coverage of the president's attempts to help the city of Chicago secure the 2016 Olympics, saying that Rupert Murdoch's cable news juggernaut, which famously bills itself as being "fair and balanced," has "continued its disregard for the facts in an attempt to smear the Administration's efforts" to convince the International Olympic Committee that the US should host the games. Lee specifically takes issue with Glenn Beck, who in July accused the president of being a "racist" with "a deep-seated hatred for white people or white culture," for showing that "nothing is worthy of respect if it can be used as part of a partisan attack to boost ratings." Lee then goes on to "reality check" a number of assertions recently made by Beck on his afternoon program, in addition to directing readers to the St. Petersburg Times' Politifact site, which rebuts accusations made by Fox News' Steve Doocy against Patrick Gaspard, the director ...

Just moments after saying - and partly taking credit - he was in agreement with the White House that criticism to President Obama's policies, mostly by Rep. Joe Wilson, is "not racism," RNC Chairman Michael Steele accuses the White House of racism, regarding President Obama advising New York Gov. David Paterson not to seek reelection and withdraw as a candidate as he might "drag down the party". "I found that to be stunning," he told Bob Schieffer on "Face The Nation," "that the White House would send word to one of only two black Governors in the country not to run for reelection. It just raised a curious point for me... I find it to be stunning, and also rather bold." "You don't think he has asked him not to run because he's black," Schieffer asked. Steele's concern was that there was "so few" black Governors. "It's just a curiosity for me that the White House would inject itself into that debate when I don't think it's appropriate nor necessary."

WASHINGTON DC -- Helen Thomas calls Obama administration out on social media smokescreen -- Chip Reid and Helen Thomas gave White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs a four-minute chunk of grief over trying to control the press in a way Thomas said was worse than even Richard Nixon. Thomas, who has been covering White House press briefings I think since Taft was in office, has had a bit of internet fame due to her part in Stephen Colberts epicly awesome GWB send-up during the White House Correspondents Association Dinner in 2006. If you recall, Thomas chased a terrified Colbert around in his fantasy of being the White House Press Secretary, badgering Colbert about the reasons behind invading Iraq. Thomas proved that her biting critique showed no partisan leanings yesterday when she and Reid laid into Gibbs for ridiculous executive branch policies that actually use social media to limit and tightly control the content of Townhall meetings and press briefings. The debate begins when Gibbs insists that Reid submit questions via Facebook and Twitter to be answered tomorrow rather than just opening the forum to on-the-spot questions. Gibbs plays dopey, telling Reid to get on his e-mail address while Reid tries to explain how refusal to answer questions isnt open or transparent. Gibbs giggles throughout the exchange in a way that makes you want to slap him, and really only proves the two annoyed reporters right by dancing around answering questions. Two minutes in Thomas brings ...
