Two days after the Saints momentous 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV, and exactly one week before Fat Tuesday, New Orleans experienced "Lombardi Gras"—an over-the-top extravaganza featuring a razzle-dazzle parade of Mardi Gras floats conveying Saints players, coaches, cheerleaders, staff and family members. Quarterback (and Super Bowl MVP) Drew Brees—who was set to reign over the Krewe of Bacchus parade on the Sunday before Mardi Gras—rode with his offensive line on the ornate Bacchus king float. With his sparkling eyes and black pageboy cap, Saint Drew radiated youthful exuberance, whooping it up with the crowd. Having guided his team to a fantasy realm overflowing with milk and honey, while also serving as a key catalyst in helping New Orleans recover from a deluge of mythic proportions, he invariably was cast as civic savior and principal protagonist in a narrative evoking themes of resilience, rebuilding and resurrection. When his float reached the reviewing stand at Gallier Hall, US Senator David Vitter hailed him as the "new favorite son" of the Crescent City. Two days after the Saints' momentous 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV, and exactly one week before Fat Tuesday, New Orleans experienced "Dat Tuesday" or "Lombardi Gras" (a reference to the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the legendary coach who guided the Green Bay Packers to victory in Super Bowls I and II). Unlike anything seen before in a city celebrating a sports championship, the over-the-top extravaganza featured a razzle-dazzle line-up of Mardi Gras floats conveying Saints players, coaches, cheerleaders, staff and family members through the streets of the city. Drawing the biggest crowd ever to watch a parade in New Orleans—estimates ran as high as 800000—it generated unprecedented levels of excitement and traffic gridlock, and left commentators grasping for superlatives. Saints head coach Sean Payton rode on the last float, the massive Smokey Mary choo-choo train from the Krewe of Orpheus. Having slept with the trophy on the night of the Super Bowl—he joked about possibly having drooled on it—Payton now kissed it repeatedly, blew kisses to the crowd and triumphantly held it aloft for all to admire, rapturously. At Gallier Hall, where politicians and dignitaries gathered, the Smokey Mary stopped for a toast. "Here's to the best Mardi Gras week in this history of this city," Payton proclaimed.

They called it Lombardi Gras, or Dat Tuesday. Celebrating the New Orleans Saints' first-ever Super Bowl victory, the over-the-top extravaganza featured a razzle-dazzle line-up of Mardi Gras floats conveying Saints players, coaches, cheerleaders, staff and family members through the streets of the city. Drawing the biggest crowd ever to watch a parade in New Orleans—estimates ran as high as 800000—it generated unprecedented levels of excitement and traffic gridlock, and left commentators grasping for superlatives. Lombardi Gras was, by many accounts, simply the "best parade ever," and set an almost impossibly high bar for any other city hosting a championship celebration. But if the cavalcade followed the format a Mardi Gras parade, the usual dynamic—of everyone having their own little parade party and getting caught up in the mania for catching throws—simply didn't apply. An entirely different set of expectations was in play. For spectators, it was more about giving—expressing thanks to the players, coaches and staff for bringing the joy of championship to New Orleans—than receiving or being entertained. The throws tossed by the players were almost superfluous. What mattered was catching a glimpse of the heroes and bearing witness to history. Instantly recognizable in their white Super Bowl game jerseys, the players were having the time of their lives simultaneously acknowledging and stoking the unbridled love, euphoria and excitement being exuded by hundreds of thousands ...
