In this set of lectures, I describe the threat facing the world from the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and a bold proposal on how we might meet the challenge of eliminating this disease by engineering the immune system. In part 1, I provide a broad introduction to viruses, describing their basic properties and my own history of studying the replication RNA viruses which led to the discovery of reverse transcriptase. I also illustrate the distinguishing features of equilibrium viruses (eg the common cold) that have adapted to co-exist with their host and non-equilibrium viruses (eg HIV) that have recently jumped from another species, are not adapted to the new host, and which can lead to disastrous outcomes (eg loss of immune function with potential lethality in the case of HIV). Go into startup and end everything you are definately positively sure do not have to be there. So end itunes, msn, everything. Ultimately the virus can be a random combination of letters and numbers, but some names occur quite often. A message might pop up saying you have viruses or something, and will suggest you download a program. If you get it, don't install anything. No antivirus can currently detect it. It will be activated tomorrow, and there are 2 things you can do to see if you have it. If you have windows update usually turned on, go to your control panel. It probably turned it off. If it is still on, theres a good chance you don't have it. It will also block access to the Microsoft website. Go to www.microsoft.com and see if the page loads properly. If it does, you're in good shape. UPDATE: So far, nothing happened. But there is proof that there is a virus on millions of computers worldwide.
