Newfoundland Artist
This is Cock O' The North, a Scottish tune, also known as Auntie Mary in Newfoundland. I'm playing it in the key of F on my great grandfather's old Hohner C/F accordion. This is a fairly simple song to play, as the melody fits in a single octave, so I don't have to move my right hand at all. Also, unlike a lot of other songs, the harmony is all I and V chords, which lets me stick to just two buttons on the left hand side -- so no need to move my left hand either. ;-) Lyrics: Ah, as I got done, my glascots on, The lad I chance to see. He wore a feather in his cap, And tartan on his knee. A lassie walked there by his side And as the men did bye, The lassie looked at everyone And then I heard her cry. Chorus: Oh gie to me the lad you'll see From Russia to the forks, The marching lilt the swing of the kilt, And that's the Cock O' the North. Now you'll see him down in London Town, You'll know him by his eyes. They're proud and free and blue to see, As any highland skies. As he swings along he sings a song That tells you where he's from. To Scotland's Isles and bens and kyles He surely must belong. (Chorus) There's your Irish dan, your English man, Your dubbie bach from Wales uh Your Spanish Joe, and your Frenchie beau, And other kinds of males The lads they say from USA are very hard to beat, And way down under you would wonder Of the men you'll meet. (Chorus) Oh the lads who come from Inverness, From Keffshire or Kintail, Will meet a lass and soon we'll hear Her bonnie helt ...
I'm playing I's The B'y in the key of F on a restored Hohner C/F accordion that belonged to my great grandfather. Lyrics: I's the b'y that builds the boat And I's the b'y that sails her I's the b'y that catches the fish And brings them home to Lizer Chorus: Hip your partner Sally Tibbo Hip your partner Sally Brown Fogo, Twillingate, Morton's Harbour All around the circle Sods and rinds to cover your flake Cake and tea for supper Codfish in the spring of the year Fried in maggoty butter I don't want your maggoty fish That's no good for winter I can get as good as that Down in Bonavista I took Lizer to a dance And faith but she could travel And every step that she did take Was up to her knees in gravel Susan White she's out of sight Her petticoat wants a border Old Sam Oliver in the dark He kissed her in the corner.

I just love these guys. They are Newfoundland imports Paul Lamb and Cory Tetford who also happen to be two of my favourite local performers. Here they are celebrating Christmas at the Lower Deck in Halifax, NS.
