In this video, we take another look at the Nikon D3100, a DSLR that is aimed at entry-level users. In our previous review, done by Lok, he used some rather "technical" language that might have perplexed some of the beginners out there, so, in this video we aim to review the camera in as easy-to-understand way as possible.

Just got my new Nikon D3100-- updated from an old Nikon D50. Video shot at 24 fps, 1920 x 1080 resolution. Used the 18-55mm AF VR kit lens (switched to autofocus). I noticed a few things while recording: - Camera must be horizontal to record properly-- does not automatically adjust frame - Must continuously hold shutter release button for Focus - Lens focus sound is very audible (but can be minimized by using a prime lens) - Very good mic - Good image quality-- this video was shot with low available light, so keep that in mind while watching.

Same subjects like 1st clip, almost identical light condition, disabled d-light, enable landscape profile, better lens (now Sigma 120-300 F2.8) at 300mm, -0.3 stop exposure. It seems that in order to get good clips d-light has to be disabled or clips are too flat, profile must have a bit more contrast and must underexpose a bit, but all this is doable and easy. Little shakes are due to people walking on the deck. This time a tripod was used.

froknowsphoto.com I got my hands on a D3100 for a few minutes today to un-box and get a few minutes of video thanks to Allen and Allen's Camera 215.547.2841. Be sure to call Allen if you wold like to pick up one of these bad boys. This camera pretty much feels like the D3000 felt like in your hands. The new buttons feel really responsive and the dedicated video lever is a really smart and functional design. The new batter will definitely come in handy when you are taking 10 minute long videos and doing a lot of playback Who is this camera for, this camera is for someone just starting out looking to capture more still images than video. It is going to capture some solid images though right now I can not open the RAW file because ACR has not been updated yet. I also wanted to say that the new AF system looked really good and seems very responsive. If you are looking to do video more than photos than you will want to step up to the D7000 when it comes out. Take a look at the unboxing below and what I think it smells like.
froknowsphoto.com I did a few minutes of test video using the Nikon 35 1.8 and 70-200 VR2. As you can see in some of the videos there is a major jello effect when you are panning. When you are still and focused on a subject the quality seems to be really nice. The audio of course is lacking as its a built in mic with no inputs for using external mics. The Autofocus seemed to be pretty responsive, it is not lighting fast but being the first Nikon to offer such a feature I think it did a great job with it. If i were to use this camera for VIDEO it would be on a tripod where it would not be panning. Keep in mind this is a $600 body, I think the video quality will be very usable as long as you know how to use it. For a starter camera you get a lot of bang for your buck!!!

Nikon has released the D3100, which is an update to their entry-level DSLR range (the predecessors being the D3000 and the D5000). One of the big changes to this camera is that it now has 1080p video mode and AF-F, continuous autofocus during movie mode. So, what is the Nikon D3100 like? For this video, I used ISO 200 and tracking continuous AF. I worked in Program, to see if the camera can manage to adjust the exposure according to the light changes. In the far distance, the place was very dusty but the camera could still focus. As you can see, it was able to adjust to the changing light conditions. The focus did a pretty well job, considering that the car was moving straight towards me with around 80km/h (about 50mph). The lens was the new Nikkor 55-30mm F:4,5-5,6 G ED VR. The lens itself is quite slow and it "chokes" the camera. Used with a better lens, the D3100 can do a much better job.

The focus was set on Spot and as you can see, it jumps sometimes. This can be easily fixed if Matrix Focusing is used instead. The sound is pretty good, but the noise of the focusing mechanism records in the movie.
