This is the complete version (9:14 minutes). Self-determination is defined as free choice of ones own acts without external compulsion, and especially as the freedom of the people of a given territory to determine their own political status or independence from their current state. In other words, it is the right of the people of a certain nation to decide how they want to be governed without the influence of any other country. The latter is a complex concept with conflicting definitions and legal criteria for determining which groups may legitimately claim the right to self-determination. This often coincides with various nationalist movements.

Current political status The International Independent Group of Eminent Persons (IIGEP), which terminates its observation mission reasoning that the proceedings of the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) setup by the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) to investigate and inquire into serious violations of Human Rights, have not been transparent and not satisfied basic international norms and standards, in its concluding public report on Tuesday blamed the Government of Sri Lanka for "absence of will" in the present Inquiry to "investigate cases with vigour, where the conduct of its own forces has been called into question." The IIGEP was fully formed in February 2007, when the President of Sri Lanka invited 11 persons from a number of countries to observe the work of the Commission of Inquiry to Investigate and Inquire into Alleged Serious Violations of Human Rights ("the Commission"), which was established in November 2006. The Serious Violations referred to in the Warrant establishing the Commission were 15 cases dating from 1 August 2005 until 16 October 2006. A 16th case was later added. tinyurl.com

Self-determination or the right to self-determination is a theoretical principle that a people should have the freedom to determine their own governmental forms and structures. In most cases, the principle of self determination is used by an ethnic or religious minority within a specific geographic area when seeking independence from a majority to escape prejudice or persecution. However, the right to self-determination has been most effectively employed in the decolonization movement. Because there is a percieved risk that applying the principle of self-determination leads to the fragmentation of states, states have resisted the demand by people for their right to self determination. Although this principle was first applied in international relations by the American President Woodrow Wilson in his speech on January 8, 1918 outlining his14 points for reconstructing a new Europe after World War I, the right of all people to self-determination was not introduced into the framework of international law and diplomacy until the UN Charter was ratified in 1945. The United Nations Charter is the constitution of the United Nations. The 50 original member countries signed it at the United Nations Conference on International Organisation in San Francisco on June 26, 1945. It entered into force on October 24, 1945, after being ratified by the five founding members—the Republic of China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States—and a majority of the other ...

The Reverend Father also explained the reasons for the public impression of silence from Vatican and from the southern Sinhala bishops. he interview to Nilavaram, a debate programme of the NTT was aired on 06 April, 2008. Extracts from the interview with the late Reverend Father follow: Rev. Father MX Karunaratnam "The Bishop [of Mannaar Diocese] has clearly said that this was a peace zone. Let the GoSL not cause confusion. It is a known fact that this peace zone is situated within the LTTE territory. Ranil Wickramsinghe's government may have signed the Cease Fire Agreement in 2002, but the then President Chandrika had accepted it, so did the International Community. The Government of Sri Lanka should have respected it." "The Sri Lankan ...
