Michigan Senator Mike Prusi delivers Northern Michigan University's 2010 Spring Commencement address. Speech delivered on May, 1, 2010 in the Superior Dome. Part 1 of 2.
This is a project about innovation within the public sector. We chose to focus on the construction of a hoop house on Northern Michigan University's campus. We feel that this hoop house is a tool that will be utilized in a variety of ways (science projects, culinary art projects, construction design, and community-wide farming education). As a result of this project, student employment will increase. If local farmers choose to build similar hoop houses, they can extend their growing season and gain profits. Also, this project has sparked other innovative ideas such as installing worm farms on campus. Worm farms use old food waste from food venues and turn it into valuable compost that grows better plants. Overall, worm farming in convergence with the hoop house project will improve both the private sector (local farms and communities) as well as the public (NMU).
