In this video I discuss interesting questions that make you think about our atmosphere and why we must compensate for it at various altitudes. Why there is snow at the tops of mountains and not the bottoms, and if noble gases would make your voice carry heavier, thus creating a lower pitch sound. Questions: 1.) Why must you cook a Digiorno Pizza at 375 degrees at 3500 feet, but at a lower altitude, you must cook it at 400 degrees? 2.) Why is it that, if heat rises, snow exists at the top of mountains and not at the bottom? 3.) If a more dense gas, such as neon, argon, krypton, or xenon, were inhaled, would your voice pitch drop to a lower sound? (Theoretically if it were safe to inhale these noble gases)
Neon is the chemical element that has the symbol Ne and atomic number 10. Although a very common element in the universe, it is rare on Earth. A colorless, inert noble gas under standard conditions, neon gives a distinct reddish-orange glow when used in discharge tubes and neon lamps. It is commercially extracted from air, in which it is found in trace amounts. Neon was discovered in 1898 by Scottish chemist Sir William Ramsay (18521916) and English chemist Morris W. Travers (18721961) in London, England. Neon was discovered when Ramsay chilled a sample of the atmosphere until it became a liquid, then warmed the liquid and captured the gases as they boiled off. The three gases that boiled off were krypton, xenon, and neon. In December of 1910, French engineer Georges Claude made a lamp from an electrified tube of neon gas. On January 19, 1915, Claude began selling his tubes to US companies; the Packard car dealership in Los Angeles was one of the first to buy it. Neon is often used in signs and produces an unmistakable bright reddish-orange light. Although still referred to as "neon", all other colors are generated with the other Noble Gases or by many colors of fluorescent lighting. In the first experiments we treated samples off line with H prior pyrolysis. We expected to reduce, to some extent, a putative surface absorbed O which is responsible for a CO2 release in conjunction with P3 noble gases at low temperatures ea. up to 700 degrees C [2]. Contrary to our expectations we found that the low temperature release of P3 Ar was not practically affected although noticeable decreases in the release temperature of the other components ea.
