On February 13, Lerro Productions ran a photo charter on the Strasburg Railroad. The railroad's 4-8-0 #475 was modified for the event, receiving new paint and special features to resemble 4-8-0 #382, an engine made famous by rail photographer O. Winston Link. With a recreated mixed train as seen on the Abingdon Branch, the "382" being faithful recreated with even with its custom whistle, not to mention over two feet of snow on the ground from earlier in the week made this a very unique event. A new batch of videos, this time from the vhs video, "Cinders, Rods and Rails: Echoes in the East" - a 1989 production of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the NRHS. Some of the footage quality is not that great, but it's a very old tape. This clip is of Norfolk & Western #611, #1218, and Nickel Plate Road #587, in two different segments, all running separately and together, back in the late 1980's. The descriptions on the back of the box from each "segment": "Norfolk and Western "J" Class #611 (Roanoke Shops, 1950), the most powerful "Northern" type and often described as the finest passenger locomotive ever built. We see the engine alone, and doubleheaded with "A" class 1218. The two locomotive produce 194000 pounds of tractive effort, 11500 horsepower, and weigh 1.8 million pounds with their tenders!" "Introducing the most recent restoration of the group, Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 number 587 (Baldwin, 1918). Originally built for a subsidiary of the New York Central, this "Mikado" freight-hauler was restored by volunteers between 1983-1988. Norfolk & Western J Class 4-8-4 Steam Locomotive Lionel 6-38026 The new Lionel N&W J Class locomotive not only pays tribute to the N&W Js status as a railroading legend, but lives up to its roots as a historic Lionel icon. After all, we introduced the N&W J to the model railroading world back in our 1957 catalog. In its latest incarnation, the new Lionel Norfolk & Western J class locomotive is the most spectacular version of this classic yet produced in O Gauge. We studied historical photos, drawings and even paid a visit to the only surviving J, #611, down in Roanoke, VA. Our model, number 606, is scale-sized with an exceptional level of detail. We modeled the 606 as she appeared after WWII, streamlined with a smooth non-vented front shroud, spoked pilot wheels and a bell atop the boiler. The tender is as accurate as the locomotive with detailed Commonwealth trucks and a graceful arched deck. Our model includes separately applied builders plates, locomotive classification plates on the steam chests and a tender classification plate on the rear of the tender. The Norfolk Southern Steam Collection is the best of the material we shot during 1987-1989 which was the pinnacle of the NS Steam program in our estimation. We see Norfolk and Western 4-8-4 611, and N&W 2-6-6-4 in all three videos, including on N&W rails only in Volume 1, Nickel Plate 587 and 611, plus tripleheader with 587 in Volume 2, and Several different one-way freight runs with different engines in NS Steam Freights. After watching 475 pull away from Strasburg, I raced out to Cherry Hill and hiked out to the end of Groff's Grove and set up. As you can see, the bugs just loved me! It was rather peaceful out there, you can see a tractor crossing the hill off in the background after a while. The only thing that spoiled the moment was the low-flying airplane!
