K-278 Komsomolets was the only Project 685 Плавник (Plavnik, meaning "fin", also known by its NATO reporting name of "Mike"-class) nuclear-powered attack submarine of the Soviet Navy. Project 685 was tasked with developing an advanced submarine that could carry a mix of torpedoes and cruise missiles with conventional or nuclear warheads. The first designs were developed in the 1960s, but construction did not start until the first (and only) keel was laid down on 22 April 1978 at Severodvinsk. K-278 was launched on 9 May 1983 and commissioned in late 1984. K-278 had a double hull, the inner one being composed of titanium, which gave her an operating depth far greater than that of the best American submarines. An escape capsule was fitted in the sail to enable the crew to abandon ship in the event of an underwater emergency. Initial Western intelligence estimates of K-278s speed were based on the assumption that she was powered by a pair of liquid-metal lead-bismuth reactors. When the Soviet Union revealed that the submarine used a single conventional pressurized-water reactor, these estimates were lowered. In October 1988, K-278 was honored by becoming one of the few Soviet submarines to be given an actual name: Комсомолец (Komsomolets, meaning "a member of the Young Communist League"), and her commanding officer, Evgeniy Dmitrievich Chernov, was made a Hero of the Soviet Union for diving to a depth of more than 1300 meters (4265 feet). On 7 April 1989, while still under Chernov's command and running submerged about 180 kilometres (100 nautical miles) southeast of Bear Island (Norway), fire broke out in the aft compartment, and even though watertight doors were shut, the resulting fire spread through bulkhead cable penetrations. The reactor scrammed and propulsion was lost. Electrical problems spread as cables burned through, and control of the boat was threatened. An emergency ballast tank blow was performed and the submarine surfaced eleven minutes after the fire began. Distress calls were made, and most of the crew abandoned ship. The fire continued to burn, fed by the compressed air system. Several hours after the boat surfaced, she sank again in 1500-1700 meters (5000 to 5600 ft) of water. The commanding officer and four others who were still on board entered the escape capsule and ejected it, but it was partially flooded and filled with toxic gases. Only one of the five to reach the surface survived. Rescue aircraft arrived quickly and dropped small rafts, but many men had already died from hypothermia in the 2 °C (36 °F) water of the Barents Sea. The ship Aleksandr Khlobystsov arrived 81 minutes after K-278 sank, and took aboard 25 survivors and 5 fatalities. In total, 42 men died in the accident. In addition to her eight standard torpedoes K-278 was carrying two torpedoes armed with nuclear warheads. The site of the accident is one of the richest fishing areas in the world, and the possible leakage of plutonium from the torpedoes' warheads or enriched uranium and fission products from the reactor could destroy the local fisheries, costing billions of dollars annually. Under pressure from Norway, the Soviet Union used deep sea submersibles operated from the oceanographic rescue ship Akademik Mstislav Keldysh to search for K-278. In June 1989, two months after the sinking, the wreck was located. Soviet officials stated that any possible leaks were "insignificant" and no threat to the environment. Examination of the wreck in May 1992 revealed cracks along the entire length of the titanium hull, some of which were of 30-40 centimetres (12-16 inches) wide, as well as possible breaches in the reactor coolant pipes. An oceanographic survey of the area in August 1993 survey did suggest that waters at the site were not mixing vertically, and thus the sea life in the area was not being rapidly contaminated. However, that survey also revealed a hole over six metres (20 feet) wide in the forward torpedo compartment. An expedition during the summer of 1994 revealed some plutonium leakage from one of the two nuclear torpedoes. That expedition was successful in sealing some of the holes in the submarine's hull. On 24 June 1995 yet another mission set out to seal the hull fractures, and declared success at the end of July 1996. The Russian government has declared the risk of radioactive contamination of the environment negligible until 2015 or 2025. In 1993, Vice Admiral (ret.) Chernov founded the Komsomolets Nuclear Submarine Memorial Society, a charity to support the widows and orphans of his former command. Since then, the Society's charter has expanded to provide assistance to the families of all Soviet and Russian submariners lost at sea.

Bloody Valentine Tragedy on February 14, CE 70, the Earth Alliance, specifically the Atlantic Federation, sent the Agamemnon-class carrier, Roosevelt and escorts to the Junius City region of PLANTs, for a "show of force". However, Blue Cosmos members decided to change its mission to starving off PLANTs' food supplies, as Junius was an agricultural city. The Atlantic Federation gave permission to use the nuclear weapons placed onboard the Roosevelt by the Blue Cosmos. While the Laurasia-class frigates, Nazca-class destroyers and GINNs of ZAFT fought against the Roosevelt's escorts, a group of Mobieus mobile armors launched to fire the nuclear warheads. One Mobieus made it to the launch point, and fired the weapon, which made contact with and destroyed Junius Seven, a PLANT-type space colony in the Junius City area of PLANT, killing 243,721 civilians. The incident was called the Bloody Valentine Tragedy and marked the opening of Coordinator-Natural hostilities. Battle of Yggdrasil The first major battle of the war was fought near the pre-war international space station, Yggdrasil. The battle lasted about a month and resulted in the destruction of the space station. Operation Uroboros In response to the direct nuclear attack, ZAFT modified N-Jammer technology, initially intended to be used against the Earth, as a countermeasure against nuclear weaponry in space. With the modified production schedule, the N-Jammers were not dropped on Earth until April 1 CE 70, as the first phase of ZAFT's Operation Uroboros. The use of N-Jammers on Earth and the subsequent energy crisis, known as the April Fool Crisis, provoked massive human starvation, due to the heavy reliance on nuclear energy. The second phase of Operation Uroboros was the actual offensive on the Earth's surface, where ZAFT would take under control most of Africa, all of Australia and many Asian regions, including three of Earth's five major spaceports: Victoria, Gibraltar, and Kaohsiung leaving Porta Panama in Alliance hands and Kaguya at Onogoro Island in the Orb Union's control. Battle of Carpentaria One of ZAFT's earliest landings took place in the friendly Oceania Union territory. The Earth Alliance Pacific Fleet attacked ZAFT's forces. After two days, the Battle of Carpentaria ended in victory for ZAFT, who immediately began the construction of the Carpentaria Base. First Battle of Jachin Due The Earth Alliance ordered its 5th and 6th fleets, stationed on the Moon, to attack PLANT, on April 17 CE 70. They were intercepted by ZAFT forces and engaged at the resource satellite, Jachin Due. In the aftermath of this battle, the PLANT Supreme Council decided to convert the entire asteroid of Jachin Due into a defensive base. Battle of Endymion Crater The Battle of Endymion Crater took place on the Moon. The battle ended with the destruction of the whole Endymion Crater, when the Earth Alliance Forces used their ice melting microwave-emission device, known as the Cyclops system, to destroy their own resource base, causing heavy casualties and damages on both sides. The 3rd Fleet of the Earth Alliance was wiped out in this battle, along with its elite TS-MA2mod.00 Moebius Zero mobile armor corps, except for one Moebius Zero pilot, Mu La Flaga. ZAFT forces were forced to abandon the Endymion Crater and withdrew from the moon. First Sea Battle of Casablanca The Mediterranean fleet of the Earth Alliance fought against a ZAFT submarine carrier fleet near Casablanca. ZAFT won the battle and their forces entered the Mediterranean, where they began constructing of the Gibraltar Base and advanced further into Southern Africa. Battle of Suez The Battle of Suez, won by ZAFT invading forces, ensured ZAFT the key Black Sea territories and the control of the Suez area. A huge linear tank corps, led by Morgan Chevalier, was routed by Andrew Waltfeld at El Alamein, earning Waltfeld the Desert Tiger reputation, as a master of desert-based combat. Battle of Nova ZAFT forces launch a drawn out series of raids against the Earth Alliance resource satellite of Nova at Lagrangian point 4. Skirmishes between the two sides lasted for nearly a month, with neither side ever decisively defeating the other. Ultimately, the Earth Alliance abandons the satellite and ZAFT begins to move the station towards the PLANTs. Despite minor raids by Earth Alliance forces, Nova reaches Lagrangian point 5, where ZAFT converts it into the space fortress, Boaz. By late August CE 70, a territorial stalemate on Earth was reached, with Northern Africa and Australia firmly in ZAFT hands, Sub-Saharan Africa, Eurasia, South Asia and the Americas in the Earth Alliance, and the majority of Oceania neutral. Battle of Kaohsiung The Battle of Kaohsiung took place on the island of Taiwan, where ZAFT forces successfully attacked the Earth Alliance spaceport, located in the city of Kaohsiung. This was the first mass driver ZAFT would capture from the Earth Alliance.

Landing back in the sea, a tether is connected to the Cormorant by a robotic underwater vehicle and the aircraft can be reeled in to the submarine that is loitering just below the surface. Made of titanium and other advanced materials, the Cormorant weighs about four tons. To compensate for underwater pressures that are three times greater than the maximum pressure that a typical aircraft can withstand, the inside of the Cormorant will be pressurized with inert gas or air. Smart, stealthy, and fast, the Cormorant's gull-like wings can fold and unfold around the body of the aircraft.

A Russian nuclear-powered submarine hit by an accident that killed 20 people has put into port at Bolshoi Kamen near Vladivostok - home of Russia's Pacific Fleet. Russian bombers were targeting Georgia's economic infrastructure, National Security Council secretary Alexander Lomaia said, including the country's largest Black Sea port, Poti, and the main road connecting the southern part of Georgia with the east and the airport. Georgian television reported that the port had been destroyed. Georgia, a former Soviet state, sent troops into South Ossetia on Thursday, aiming to crack down on the separatists, who want independence or unification with North Ossetia, which is in Russia. Russia responded Friday, sending troops into the Georgian province where it had peacekeepers stationed. Great Britan's first nuclear weapons test, code named "Hurricane". This clip did have the "Scorpions" song "Rock my like a Hurricane", but youtube made me take it off. Hurricane was the culmination of many years of nuclear research conducted by Great Britain, the start of which dated back to 1940 when Otto Frisch and Rudolf Peierls made the first theoretically sound critical mass calculations. The site chosen for the test was at the Monte Bello Islands off the West Coast of Australia. In September 1950, Australian Prime Minister Robert Menzies made an agreement with Great Britain to use Australia as a nuclear test site in exchange for nuclear technology. The Hurricane device was very similar to the U.S. Mk-3 "Fatman" plutonium implosion bomb. Since the Windscale nuclear plant was unable to manufacture the necessary plutonium needed by August 1, 1952 for the test, some Canadian plutonium was also used in the core of the atomic device. The device used a levitated pit, which not only increased the power of the bomb, but also served as a safety precaution as the core could be inserted into the device shortly before the firing. At Woolwich the high explosives assembly was prepared for the implosion device. It was decided to fire the bomb inside the hull of the River-class frigate HMS Plym. This was done so that the effects of a nuclear detonation on board a ship could be understood, simulating the scenario of a nuclear device being smuggled into a harbor and detonated. While a tower detonation would be more adequate for the collection of diagnostic data, a ship detonation was used because it presented a more 'realistic' option in terms of information gathered for civil defense purposes. The atomic device, minus the plutonium core, was loaded on the HMS Plym at Sheerness dockyard prior to its ten thousand mile voyage. The escort carrier HMS Campania, the flagship of the convey, set sail from Portsmouth bound for the Monte Bello Islands on June 10, 1952. Lead by Captain A.D. Torlesse, the expedition to test Britain's first atomic device consisted of five ships and 1,500 personnel. Concern arose about the possible crash of the fissile core transport aircraft and a peculiar contingency plan was formulated. The core would be contained in a case that would float in water, in the event of a crash into the sea. Prior to bailing out of the aircraft, one of the crew members would collect the case and parachute to the ocean holding it at all times. The fissile core was safely delivered to the Monte Bello Islands on September 15, 1952. The day before the shot one remaining scientist on board the HMS Plym switched on and armed the firing circuits. He then delivered a master switch to the control bunker where the firing circuit was completed. Hurricane was fired in the lagoon 400 yards off Trimouille Island at 59:24 on October 3, 1952 (GMT). The explosion had a yield of 25 kilotons and vaporized the HMS Plym. The device itself was located 8 feet under the water line and 40 feet above the ocean floor. The resulting explosion left a crater on the lagoon seabed 20 feet deep and 1,000 feet across. Small fires were caused by the explosion on Trimouille Island. The cloud from the explosion rose to an altitude of 15,000 feet. This was a low altitude for such a test mainly due to the dry air at the time and the presence of a strong inversion layer at that altitude. The blast was observed by men stationed at the Control Point on Hermite Island and from the HMS Campania, which had put to sea for the shot. William Penney observed the explosion from the HMS Campania. Heavy contamination was recorded north of the blast zone by the first survey teams that re-entered the site shortly after the blast to collect instruments. The southerly Leeuwin current would carry much of the fallout back toward the western Australian coast. One of the landing craft was sunk due to contamination and 30 barrels of radioactive waste collected during clean up operations was dumped into the sea. In November 1953, the first nuclear weapon entered the British stockpile. The Blue Danube plutonium bomb was based mainly on the Hurricane design and was technically similar to the U.S. Mk-4. The weapon used a 60 inch, 32 lens implosion system and a levitated core suspended within a hollow uranium tamper.

Rust in Peace...Polaris is the final track/title track to Megadeth's 4th studio album "Rust in Peace". The Rust in Peace Album was named by frontman Dave Mustaine when he saw a bumper sticker saying "May all your nuclear weapons rust in peace". This is the first Megadeth album to feature guitarist Marty Friedman. Dave Mustaine recorded this album without difficulty do to his newfound sobriety. The song's lyrics shows the side of the nuclear warhead "Polaris" inciting fear in the human population. During the chorus though, Mustaine says that they will just rust in peace. India on Tuesday successfully test-fired the submarine-launched ballistic missile from under the sea off the Vizag coastline. Codenamed K-15, the test-fire extended India's critical third leg of the nuclear triad to sea.
