Pakistan has expressed concern over the induction of a nuclear submarine in the Indian Navy and said it will jeopardise the security paradigm of the entire region. ISPR spokesperson for the Pakistan Navy Commander Salman Ali said that Indian move would have far-reaching destabilising effects on the security environment not only of Pakistan but also of all the littoral states of Indian Ocean and beyond. He said the induction of 6000-tonne INS Arihant in the Indian Navy had the potential to trigger a nuclear arms race in the region and all littoral states, including Pakistan, would have to take appropriate safeguards. According to defence experts, the Indian nuclear submarine, the first of five planned, is powered by an 85-megawatt nuclear reactor and can reach 44 km an hour (24 knots) under water. It will be armed with torpedoes and ballistic missiles, and carry a crew of 95 men. Analysts say that the nuclear-powered submarine and the satellite launch vehicles planned by India have got a boost by the Indo-US nuclear deal. They believe that the Indian nuclear submarine capability will pose a serious threat to Pakistans brown water navy and in the years ahead will add to Indias capability to lay blockade and choke the flow of trade from the Gulf and via Suez Canal in the west and Strait of Malacca in the east. India's Indigenous Nuclear Submarine - Arihant
"Eleven years after India stunned the world by coming out of the nuclear closet, its planning another leap that will be the next big milestone in its emergence as a credible nuclear weapons power. On Sunday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will launch India's first nuclear-powered submarine, which is being built to fire nuclear-armed ballistic missiles. Named INS Arihant (destroyer of enemies), the submarine will complete India's triad of nuclear weapons which can be fired from land, air and under the sea. The 5000-ton vessel will be armed with 12 nuclear-armed K-15 ballistic missiles which have a 700 km range. The K-15s will later be replaced by 3500 km-range KX missiles. Its 80-MW nuclear reactor will ensure that it can stay submerged for as long as it takes. With a speed of 22 knots, it'll be much faster than conventional submarines, and for a ballistic missile-firing submarine, it is diminutive. It's 104-metre length and 10-metre width earning it the title of "The Baby Boomer"......................... .
"India on Sunday took its first visible step towards acquiring a capability to fire nuclear-tipped missiles from under water. The launch of its first indigenous nuclear submarine, INS Arihant, at Vizag brought it closer to a triad of nuclear weapons which can be fired from land, air and sea. As India caught up with the big powers, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was defensive. We do not have any aggressive designs nor do we seek to threaten anyone. We seek an external environment in our region, and beyond that is conducive to our peaceful development and the protection of our value systems," he said........................ The Arihant was tugged out of its cradle for harbour trials. The nuclear reactor will turn critical in this phase, which will be followed by sea trials and weapons firing. The submarine should be in operational use by 2011. ibnlive.in.com

India has become the sixth country in the world to build a nuclear-powered submarine capable of firing ballistic missiles. Moscow played a key role in the construction of the current sub, and has agreed to lease another.
Speaking on INS Arihant, India's very own nuclear submarine, Anil Kakodkar, Chairman of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission revealed that Russians did help in this and that it's a very quiet vessel that adds to India's strategic depth.
