This rare 8mm footage was found in a personal collection. Most likely, this is video of the last Texas Special, Train #1 running Southbound from Denison, Texas. The opening frames show the board on the MKT Waxahachie depot indicating date, train number, time of arrival, departure. The date is July of 1964. Also note the MKT Waxahachie operator flag #1 with his handkerchief for a stop. Also, note the head-end crew takes train orders at the depot. There are several nice shots in the clip. Look closely for the MKT Alco passenger locomotive in the MKT Bellmead, Texas yard, no doubt waiting to be moved to scrap, There are some very nice candid shots of the rear brakeman and conductor talking with passengers and another shot of the rear brakeman boarding the train after flagging or perhaps lining a switch. Note the uniforms of the MKT passenger crew. Note the interiors of the coach and diner as well as the unique shot from the vesibule showing the effect of two passenger cars moving back and forth. Also in this clip are scenes of the engineer, head end brakeman and/or fireman talking with passngers. Note the "old-style" cap and overalls. There is also a nice shot of the conductor and brakeman evidently having completed their run, leaving the train with a broadbrim hat. There are nice clips of passenger train track and shed at Waco, Texas. I started this day off a bit pessimistically but thanks to Randy Cooper's agreeing to meet me here in Bentonville and split the gas costs I decided to head out. On our way to our target (Clinton, OK) we picked up another fellow SevereStudios.com storm chaser, Denton Sachs. On our way down things started to look bleak. Storms went up early in Texas and a severe thunderstorm watch was issued but we stayed valiant and instead of dropping south we held our course for our original target. We made it to Clinton and stopped for lunch and waited and waited for stuff to fire but once again it was beginning to look bleak for us. The SPC has written down the risk for our area only putting a "see text" over us with a less than 2% chance of tornadoes and what towers did start to build would quickly collapse and fizzle out. The after getting some gas and goofing off we took sight of a most welcoming sight well off in the distance. It was a updraft tower! A very robust and quickly maturing one too! We quickly took action to mee the cell as it raced out of the Texas Panhandle and into Oklahoma. Once in position to intercept we watched the storm form a far as it moved towards us. Under the rain free base we started to see a nice horse shoe shape begin to develop. It was about this time that we started to see a lot of motion under the updraft and began to question if we were just seeing turbulence or rotation. Creatoon is now freeware and has the advantage of once having been an expensive commercial program for cut-out style animation. It was used to make several TV series for children. (Bonny, Banana and Mo, Numbertime) Its disadvantage (apart from no longer being supported) is that the documentation is quite poor, but there are a large number of video tutorials. This is just my first experiment just to see how much I could work out by myself. It took about 10 minutes and isn't meant to be anything more than a rough test. One thing is immediately evident - it is EASILY possible to create as many pivot-points as you need (something that was totally impossible in Artoonix which I used to use). What I now need to work out is how to translate a figure so that those pivots and limbs travel WITH the body as it moves. I know it's possible so it's just a case of working through the brief manual and looking through the tutorials. The character in this test has 6 bodyparts and was originally created for use with Tales Animator. It was easy to convert the images into the png format prior to importing them into Creatoon by using Irfanview to make the backgrounds transparent. As this was just a first test I only created 3 pivot points (each arm and the eyes). The feet were just moved to and fro with standard translation and then tweened. If only those last processes could be done with Artoonix, it would surely be a real winner but as things stand - they can't.
