We basically set up a server based system where a teacher would wear a lapel microphone which would be received by a machine in the classroom that did the translation, and then send out the text via jabber to chat clients so not only could children with a hearing impediment could see what the teacher was saying, but they, other children and the teacher themselves could type in any corrections so the system could learn over time. The idea was to also populate the system with an age specific dictionary, and with an Australian accented voice model, neither of which we had for this demo, and yet when reading any words from the short dictionary (prepopulated with some words from a childrens book) it actually worked quite nicely. It would have been nice to continue with this project, but hopefully others will take something from the idea. We were strongly focused on empowering kids and teachers to help the system continually learn, and to also help the children easily note words they didn't understand (as they are in a chat interface) for further assistance after the lesson. We used an OLPC XO laptop, which worked perfectly, and was suitable to the age group of children this was designed for.

Thorin Kerr research developer for ACID ( Australasian CRC for Interaction Design Network Jamming Project shows the prototype version of jam2jam ( www.jam2jam.com for OLPC ( One Laptop Per Child) XO computer. In this spontaneous video filmed on Project Leader Steve Dillon's Flip Thorin shows how each XO becomes an instrument (bass, drums, keyboards, guitar) and connects on OLPC's unique Sugar mesh network. ACID Research manager Assoc Prof Andrew Brown and University of Massachussetts Lowell researcher Dr Alex Ruthmann take the other instruments in the performance. jam2jam for the OLPC will be on the Australian build for OLPC going out to up to 100000 rural and Indigenous students. It will be available for for download through the OLPC network. We hope to develop a community of sharing of musical styles and recipes for jamming. Network jamming research involves examining meaningful engagement with music and media performance in communities and schools and enabling people to experience the joy of music making with others.
Via Technologies is powering the OLPC One Laptop Per Child XO 1.5 with a Via C7 1ghz processor on the VX855 chipset that can support up to 1080p video playback and other much more powerful things which also can help OLPC lower the price more quickly in terms of supporting the most up to date components of the industry that lower in price constantly. Via also has an ARM licence and is doing all kinds of things with that.

silversnowball.com Why an $1800 Investment in Silver Today Will Likely Be Worth $100000 Within The Next 15 Months silversnowball.com As the value of the dollar declines, the price of silver and gold increases reflecting the loss of purchasing power and trust in the dollar. This is why gold that sold for $250 per ounce in 2002 now sells for over $1162 per ounce today. The value of gold has not increased. Rather, its price in dollars reflects the decreased purchasing power of those dollars. Now here's how to take advantage of the dollar collapse to get out of debt, pay off your mortgage and more. At the time of this writing (12-5-09) the spot price of silver is $18.50 per ounce. I know this may be hard to believe for many, but when the dollar is devalued and a national banking holiday is called to realign banks with the newly devalued dollar, silver will soarNoLet me restate thatThe cost of silver will shoot up and skyrocket to unbelievably high dollar amounts.
