The Illinois Senate career of Barack Obama stretched from 1997 (when Barack Obama was sworn in to his first term in the Illinois Senate) to 2004 (when he was elected to the United States Senate). Starting in 1993 and throughout his state senate career, Obama also taught constitutional law part-time at the University of Chicago Law School, as a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996 and as a Senior Lecturer from 1996-2004, when he was elected to the US Senate. In the March 17, 1998 primary election, Obama, running unopposed on the ballot, won the Democratic nomination for state Senator for the 13th District, and Yesse Yehudah, running unopposed on the ballot, won the Republican nomination. In the November 3 general election, Obama was re-elected to a four-year term as state Senator for the 13th District with 89% of the vote; first-time Republican Party candidate Yesse Yehudah received 11% of the vote. Early in his first term, the just-retired US Senator Paul Simon called a longtime Obama mentor, judge and former congressman Abner Mikva. Simon suggested that Mikva recommend Obama to Emil Jones, Jr., the powerful Democratic leader of the state Senate. "'Say, our friend Barack Obama has a chance to push this campaign finance bill through,'" Simon said in a telephone conversation, as recounted by Mikva in a 2008 interview. "'Why don't you call your friend Emil Jones and tell him how good he is.'" With Jones' support, Obama helped pass a sweeping law that banned most gifts from lobbyists ...

President Obama gives his first State of The Union speech.
www.timesofearth.com Washington - Barack Obama has vowed that preserving and generating new jobs will be his administration's "number one focus in 2010". In his first state of the union address in Washington DC on Wednesday, the US president admitted that the promise of change that had been the message of his presidential campaign, had "not come fast enough" for many Americans who are frustrated and angry. Addressing the unpopularity of the bailouts given to banks, he said he had hated having to approve the measures but it was necessary to avoid a much worse situation. Now though, with recovery beginning, he said it was time for the banks to pay their debt to the taxpayer. "So tonight, I'm proposing that we take $30bn of the money Wall Street banks have repaid and use it to help community banks give small businesses the credit they need to stay afloat," Obama said. He also proposed a new small business tax credit for firms to hire workers or raise wages and to eliminate all capital gains taxes on small business investment and tax incentives to invest in new plants and equipment. Urging the Senate to follow the House of Representatives in passing a jobs bill, he said: "I want a jobs bill on my desk without delay." Despite recent stinging political setbacks, Obama said he had "never been more hopeful about Americas future than I am tonight" and would not abandon ambitious plans for longer-term fixes to healthcare, energy and education in the country. "From the day I took ...

The President of the United States using a teleprompter, complete with official podium and Presidential Seal, is not quite appropriate for appearing in a 6th grade classroom in Virginia to talk about education. It's awkward and it's embarrassing....well, it's embarrassing for me and it should be for the President and the White House. Maybe Barack Hussein could cancel a couple of his tee times and bring in a speech czar to teach him how to take thoughts and ideas from his brain and translate them onto his tongue.

The title sums it all up. For those of you that don't know what I'm saying, here's a set of captions. "Hello, I'm ThrasherDaBlackStang and I am a High School Sophomore. Earlier today, President Obama gave an address to the students of America from Kindergarten up to High School Seniors. Now usually this kind of video would be out of character for me since I normally post videos of Video Game reviews and Car Music Videos. However, that doesn't mean I don't have political views. For those of you that don't know me, I have right wing conservative views. I am however an independent because I have issues with both Democrats and Republicans alike. I lean Republican though because the Republicans have their shit together better than the Democrats do. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna lose subscribers because of that fact but that's how it is. Anyway, onto what I was going to talk about. There were many of people that watched the address and I know of a lot of people that didn't want to hear what Obama wanted to say. I myself couldn't watch the address when it was aired because I was in a class with no TV and we had a long-ass test that period. (it's the second week of school for me) But I wanted to watch the speech just to see what the "other side" was going to say. During Lunch I went into a teacher's room that lets kids come in during lunch and hang out. The teacher whom the room belonged to showed a video of the speech on YouTube. It was 5 minutes into the speech however so I only ...

"All the drama, all the hoopla, at the end of the day, if the President motivates... one student who's thinking about dropping out to stay in school and take their education seriously., it's all worth it." He also noted that it would be "just silly" for parents to keep their kids home from school on the day Obama would be speaking to schoolchildren. "It's just gonna be an 18-minute speech," he said. "That just doesn't make any sense." "I don't spend any time on the silly stuff," Duncan said. "I try and stay laser-like focused on really dramatically improving what's going on for our nation's children."

President Obama delivers controversial school speech - Sept. 08, 09 - Obama delivered the noontime speech from a high school in Arlington, Virginia. Many conservatives over the past week had expressed a fear that the president's address would be used to push a partisan political agenda. In the text of the speech posted Monday on the White House Web site, however, Obama avoided any mention of controversial political initiatives. He repeatedly urged students to work hard and stay in school. "No matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you'll need an education to do it," he said. "This isn't just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country." Several Cabinet officials are slated to deliver similar messages at various schools across the country throughout the day. In the past week, news of Obama's upcoming speech had upset some parents.
