9/14/2010 A sad day in America, our commander and chief gives a speech about responsibility and education to our nation's youth, and some schools elect to not air it, or let children see it only with parental consent forms signed...........
President to Students: work hard, focus on education Today As students begin their school year, President Obama visited Philadelphia to deliver his second Back-to-School speech to schools and students across the country. In the speech, he encouraged students to study hard, focus on your education, take responsibility for learning, and ask for help if you need it. In last year's speech, the President said that, "Every single one of you has something you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That's the opportunity an education can provide." The speech last year caused some parents to threaten to keep their children home from school and some schools gave parents the option of pulling their kids out of class to avoid being affected by politics. Because of the speech controversy last year, the White House released the text of today's speech last night before it was delivered.

President Obama delivered a speech emphasizing the need for education reform at the National Urban League convention. He discussed the need to not only help, but improve teaching standards and provide a better environment for both teachers and students. In his speech, the president said that the US has fallen in ranking from one to 12 in college completion. He also questioned why celebrities and sports stars are idolized by the public instead of teachers, asking rhetorically, "Who are we saying is important?"

Obama's education speech for kids
THE PRESIDENT: Hello, everybody! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, everybody. All right, everybody go ahead and have a seat. How is everybody doing today? (Applause.) How about Tim Spicer? (Applause.) I am here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we've got students tuning in from all across America, from kindergarten through 12th grade. And I am just so glad that all could join us today. And I want to thank Wakefield for being such an outstanding host. Give yourselves a big round of applause. (Applause.) I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it's your first day in a new school, so it's understandable if you're a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now -- (applause) -- with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you're in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could've stayed in bed just a little bit longer this morning. I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived overseas. I lived in Indonesia for a few years. And my mother, she didn't have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday. But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning ...

president obama's message has been delivered to america's school children. the president spoke to kids directly at wakefield high school-- in arlington virginia. the goal? get kids to realize-- the value of education-- hard work-- and getting a diploma. parents both supported-- and spoke out-- against the speech ahead of time. but the message was non-partisan. the story of america isn't about people who quit when things got tough. it's about people who kept going, who tried harder, who loved their country too much to do anything less than their best. he also asked all children to set their own educational goals-- and to not grow up believing the only way to be successful-- is to be an athlete- musician- or reality tv star. because of the controversy surrounding president obama's speech today-- some aps parents didn't allow their kids to watch the speech. austin reed is minute thumbnail 12:02 pm live at polk middle school in the south valley --- where he got reactions from kids... austin here at this school over 95 percent of the students watched the obama speech this morning in ms. archuleta's eighth grade class the kids listened and watched the president deliver his 20 minute speech .... most of them say it was nice to hear from their leader.... and felt there was no political agenda involved. President Obama will deliver a speech to students Tuesday that's creating controversy. The pre-speech frenzy prompted the president to publish his speech on-line Monday. 24-Hour News 8 took it to parents and an education expert for opinions.
In every debate there comes a time to decide. The time to decide is now. The time to act is now, Obama said in a Labor Day speech at the AFL-CIO picnic in Cincinnati.

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan appears on "Face the Nation" to address criticism from the right regarding President Obama's in-school speech to schoolchildren. "All the drama, all the hoopla, at the end of the day, if the President motivates... one student who's thinking about dropping out to stay in school and take their education seriously., it's all worth it." He also noted that it would be "just silly" for parents to keep their kids home from school on the day Obama would be speaking to schoolchildren. "It's just gonna be an 18-minute speech," he said. "That just doesn't make any sense." "I don't spend any time on the silly stuff," Duncan said. "I try and stay laser-like focused on really dramatically improving what's going on for our nation's children."
