Europe has sent a warm welcome to Barack Obama and most Europeans express a sense that this is an American president they can do business with and one who will also listen to their opinions and concerns. From London, Sonja Pace looks at some of the major issues between the U.S. and Europe -- where the two sides are likely to agree, where there could be friction.
Obama: Economy will get worse before it gets better By David Edwards Barack Obama told NBCs Tom Brokaw that the economy would get significantly worse before it gets better. The recession is a big problem, and its going to get worse, he said. Obama also express support for a government loan to auto makers. I dont think its an option to simply allow it to collapse, said Obama. This video is from NBCs Meet the Press, broadcast Dec. 7, 2008.
. During this past Presidential campaign, I have developed a growing appreciation of all the challenging things Barack Obama must be going through, straddling the pathways of racial and cultural divides. Being bi-racial (Black/White), I've certainly had my share of living life in-between, and have learned the value of drawing the best from both realms. Upon hearing news of the passing away of Barack Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, I was overcome with emotion. When someone said how sad it was that she died not seeing her grandson's historic achievement, my immediate reaction was that her death did not prevent her from seeing his victory as our new President, it merely prevented us from seeing her witnessing it from a different vantage point. It was then I knew I wanted to express my feelings about dreams and inspiration; to provide encouragement and comfort to the Obama family with this public testimonial. Madelyn Dunham, inspired by the dreams of Dr. King and others, was steadfast in her dream for her family. Now, Barack Obama is reaching beyond to inspire new generations of visionaries. As we take time to remember Madelyn Dunham and the Obama family let us also remember those, past and present, whose blood, sweat and tears, joys and sorrows, courage and perseverance, have contributed to the wellspring of our humanity. To them, in deepest thanks we give. - Ellison Horne MUSIC: "The Impossible Dream" by Mitch Leigh and Joe Darion SUNG BY: Sista Monica Parker, from her new CD, "Sweet Inspirations". I am proud and grateful to have the right to be outspoken. I wanted to express how I feel about Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, but I am not very good at writing political blogs or particularly fond of debating. So I figured, how better to express my opinion than to write a song. And I hope I leave you singing "I don't want an Abomination! er..I mean Obamanation".

AUSTIN (KXAN) - After the Barack Obama sign was stolen from her front yard, Shannon Bennett painted a more permanent one with 12 cans of spray-paint and her front lawn as the canvas. "I just wanted to be able to say who I support, without being censored, which is how I felt when my sign was taken," said Bennett. She painted a large, red, white, and blue symbol in the front yard, using her old Obama sign as an inspiration. "The signs cost money and it's coming into my front yard and taking away my freedom of expression," said Bennett. She said she has not received any complaints from neighbors and the makeshift sign has been in the yard for a week. In an election year, sometimes driveways and sidewalks become battle lines, but not in Bennett's Northwest Austin neighborhood. "I looked out and I was surprised to see it one morning," said neighbor Elaine Goessling. "And I am a Republican, but I was really impressed with how pretty is it." Bennett said the Obama signs have been stolen from the yards of her neighbors, as well. "They might think it's extreme, but I think it's extreme to come into my yard and take something that belongs to me, so I wanted to express myself."

A story from Michael Kinsley about John McCain at the craps table seems to me a perfect allegory for John McCain's current campaign: "McCain immediately turned to the woman and said between clenched teeth: 'DON'T TOUCH ME.' The woman started to explain...McCain interrupted her: 'DON'T TOUCH ME,' he repeated viciously. The woman again tried to explain. 'DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU'RE TALKING TO?' McCain continued, his voice rising and his hands now raised in the 'bring it on' position. He was red-faced. By this time all the action at the table had stopped. I was completely shocked. McCain had totally lost it, and in the space of about ten seconds. 'Sir, you must be courteous to the other players at the table,' the pit boss said to McCain. "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? ASK ANYBODY AROUND HERE WHO I AM." Fair or not, this adds a little color to the speculations as to whether McCain just so passionately hates Obama that he can't bring himself to treat him with anything but barely concealed contempt. I'm honestly beginning to think that McCain is... unhinged. Not by a lot, but by enough. In addition to stories like this, I can't help but look at the McCain/Palin campaign's sudden, apparently random focus on Obama and Ayers -- in the middle of a complete economic meltdown, no less -- and think, what the hell? Yes, I know that campaigns have strategies, and tactics, and phalanxes of people who sit down and game out what the candidates should be talking about, every minute of every day, but you have to be a special kind of "out of touch" to all but ignore a worldwide financial panic and spend your time instead talking to Hannity about the suspicious ancient hieroglyphics you've dug up that shows your opponent went to some guy's house for a party once, or was on a board with him, or whatever the hell they're going on at now that proves they're secretly best buds or something. Fine, we get it -- negative campaigning. But now, with no dearth of urgent actual issues to be attended to? Really? You really think that's the most important thing you could be talking about, right now? What -- are you high on cough syrup? I also think you have to be more than a little nuts -- or at least very, very bitter -- to be egging on crowds to the extent that both Palin and McCain have been. The last week has seen Republican rallies turn into screaming hate-fests, celebrations of the notion that the other candidate is a terrorist, or is anti-American, or is a danger to the nation or the like: stuff that the Secret Service really, really dislikes, and would generally put a stop to if it wasn't their own damn charges leading the rhetoric. From Palin, I'd expect it. She's proven herself at this point to be dumb as a f--king rock, and has a history of being bitterly, viciously mean in service of whatever it is she wants. She probably thinks the rallies are a hoot. McCain I would have presumed a bit more from. Yes, he's had these craps-table outbursts and the like, but this prolonged, truly spiteful turn is positively creepy, and, I'll just say it, not something you would expect from a man whose self-esteem is so apparently inseparable from his notions of his own military honor. It seems an emotional collapse, almost Shakespearian; the antihero, foiled in life one too many times, turns into a plotting, mean-spirited beast, determined to pull the whole world down around his ears if he can't get what he wants. He's having a damn temper-tantrum, that's what it is, but on a world stage. He's directing his entire campaign, his entire party, every supporter he can reach into a face-reddening, arm-flailing, carpet-kicking group temper tantrum, simply because the polls came back that show him running out of other options. Is this like the craps table incident, writ large? Is it the way McCain is prone to act, when he's losing or feels cornered? I don't know, but if this is the way he runs his campaign when under stress, I don't want him anywhere near the White House, much less in it. The only thing worse than the incompetent, hyper-aggressive foreign policy of the neoconservatives would be that same neoconservative foreign policy tethered to an unpredictable man-child prone to fits of irrational rage. At least Bush was too lazy to get into more than two wars: with McCain, we'd be starting wars based on what he had for breakfast each day. http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/10/10/24954/379/486/625988
He was an outstanding young man of great character who served— and my hope is, will continue to serve—as an inspiration to the young people of this country. —John F. Kennedy on Ernie Davis In America in the late 1950s and early 60s, one young man became a symbol for a country grappling to move past its long-held views of people of color. His unprecedented journey unfolded as he shattered not only sports records, but also perceptions of what was possible for an African-American at the time. His name was Ernie Davis, but fans knew him better as The Elmira Express. This film is a tribute to his courage. Based on a true story, The Express follows the extraordinary life of college football hero Ernie Davis (ROB BROWN of Finding Forrester, Coach Carter). His quiet fight for equality and respect forever changed the face of the game, and his civil rights story continues to inspire new generations. Born in 1939 and raised in poverty in Pennsylvania coal-mining country by his grandmother and grandfather (CHARLES S. DUTTON of Secret Window, Gothika), before moving to Elmira, New York, Davis hurdled social and economic obstacles to become one of the greatest running backs in college football history. Under the guidance of legendary Syracuse coach Ben Schwartzwalder (DENNIS QUAID of The Rookie, Any Given Sunday), he became a hero who surpassed Jim Browns achievements and became the first African-American player to be awarded the Heisman Trophy, college footballs highest individual honor. A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, CHARLES S. DUTTON (Willie Pops Davis) has a career spanning theater, television and film, and is one of the few actors to earn Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominations for the same role. He created the lead roles in three of August Wilsons early plays: Ma Raineys Black Bottom, Jo Turners Come and Gone and The Piano Lesson. He received multiple award nominations, including a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor (Featured Role in a Play), for Ma Raineys Black Bottom and The Piano Lesson. He was also nominated for an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for the Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation of The Piano Lesson. Dutton starred in and executive produced the FOX comedy-drama Roc, produced by HBO, for which he received several NAACP Image Award nominations. He has numerous television credits, including the miniseries The Murder of Mary Phagan, The 60s, Deadlocked and Aftershock: Earthquake in New York. His episodic appearances include House M.D., The Sopranos and the HBO series Oz, among others. He won Emmy Awards for his guest-starring roles in Without a Trace and The Practice. Dutton is a veteran of numerous feature films such as Q & A; Alien3; Menace II Society; Rudy; A Low Down Dirty Shame; Cry, the Beloved Country; Nick of Time; A Time to Kill; Get on the Bus; Cookies Fortune (for which he received an Independent Spirit Award nomination); Gothika; and Secret Window. This winter, he can be seen in the new John Sayles film Honeydripper. Dutton made his directorial debut in 1997 with the HBO movie First Time Felon. He also directed the award-winning HBO miniseries The Corner, for which he received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special in 2000. Duttons feature film directorial debut was the 2004 Paramount Pictures film Against the Ropes. In 2006, he directed multiple episodes of the Showtime series Sleeper Cell, for which he received a Directors Guild of America Award nomination. Most recently, he directed the Lifetime Television movie Racing for Time and the pilot Under for A&E. Dutton recently finished shooting the Screen Gems feature Legion, co-starring Paul Bettany and Dennis Quaid. http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Barack_Obama_John_McCain_Talking_Like_Jesse_Jackson Change - it's not a good thing when you are John McCain and you keep CHANGING your policies to suit the political winds that are blowing. Running on a quarter-century record of DE-regulation and then suddenly jumping trains to one heading the entirely OTHER direction gives you the honor of being called a Train Jumper. McCain is now talking like Jesse Jackson. John McCain is doing more than that - he's pushing tax cuts for the wealthy when we are all putting in our dollar's worth of taxes, struggling to pay bills AND help with the war efforts, keeping our noses clean and following the rules. Wall Street breaks the rules, McCain pretends to get tough, and then continues to push his 'feed the wealthy' agenda. At one point, he said we shouldn't be cutting taxes when we have a war. WELL, now we have TWO wars, the economy is busting in two, and he CELEBRATES giving the rich tax breaks. Is he a NUT or is it just me? This guy will say or do anything except what is right by the American people. He has forgotten what it is like to be a middle American. I think that happened sometime between when he was lounging in bars in Hawaii and marrying a millionaire wife. Money can sure make you nuts. ENOUGH - McCain has lost his honor YEARS ago - just because you had it once in your life does not give you a free pass forever. An honorable officer does not maintain his honor when he sleeps around on his wife. This is grounds for dishonorable discharge in our military. Why has McCain NOT been discharged from our government as well. It is time to put honor back in the White House, take the special interests and lobbyists OUT, and get down to the highly concentrated and patient job of fixing our country. John McCain has neither the energy nor the patience to do this job. He has shown this time and time again. America - it is time for a Change that our country can believe in - can trust - and can move forward on.

The guy who's record shows he voted nine out of ten times in lockstep with the hideous, hidden and hated George W. Bush, is being sold to the gullible bullsh*t eaters as a Maverick! And there's no shortage of greedy, blubber brained racists, homophobes and dullards to jump in line behind the Bullsh*t Express. Not satisfied with insulting the American people with that, they added the rental car lady from Planes Trains and Automobiles, kind of a Dan Quayle with tits to the ticket as their pick for next in line to lead the worlds greatest failing superpower- and behind a thrice cancered geriatric version of Archie Bunker crossed with Higgins from Magnum PI. Barack Obama may not be a saint but if you're looking for a change- if you have the IQ to see that what the Republicans have been doing for the last eight years is not working then the last person you'd want to hand the keys to is another Republican that can't stop hugging and kissing George W. Bush at the drop of the soap, and his gynecologic version of Dan Quayle. The Factor thanks JohnBigBear at DemocraticUnderground.com.
So McCain's advisors, many of which are to blame for repealing regulations that would have stopped the mortgage meltdowm, drag him back in front of the cameras to recite an ode to the American worker off index cards. And then they turn around now that they have redefined "economic fundamentals" as labor, instead of you know things like deficits, and try to spin it as Obama badmouthing workers. Sleaze. As Obama said today, McCain cannot run from his record. Nor the videotapes. See what his real attitude towards workers is... and then maybe you'll understand why his solutions only pay lip service to helping Americans apply their labor to fix their own country.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton will suspend her campaign and endorse Sen. Barack Obama on Saturday, NBC News confirmed, bringing an end to a ground-breaking presidential race. Hours after Barack Obama sealed the nomination on Tuesday, Democrats coalesced around his candidacy, sending a strong signal to Clinton that it was time to bow out. The former first lady told House Democrats during a private conference call Wednesday that she will express support for Obama's candidacy and congratulate him for gathering the necessary delegates to be the party's nominee. "Senator Clinton will be hosting an event in Washington, D.C., to thank her supporters and express her support for Senator Obama and party unity. This event will be held on Saturday to accommodate more of Senator Clinton's supporters who want to attend," said her communications director, Howard Wolfson. Aides told NBC News that there would be a private staff event Friday in Washington, followed by the public event on Saturday. They said that she would not waive her right to have her name placed in nomination and that she had not negotiated for anything from Obama, such as debt relief for her campaign.
We can not be afford to be fooled this time by John McCain and his pathetic attempts to steal the word change just for political gain. The future of our children and the future of our country depends on the out come of this election. It's been years, and the man who murdered so Many at the World Trade Center,is still free. Years later, many of the katrina victims still have not been able to return home. Instead they spend their nights in FEMA trailers that are making them sick. Years later, we are still in a war where our men and women are loosing their lives for a war that never should have taken place. We now live in an economy where the American dollar is fallen fast, people are loosing their homes, gas and food prices are on the rise when we have no extra money to give. Its time for people to be able to breath again, and not have to go to sleep every night knowing that they might not be able to pay their bills. It's time to capture the man who coldly celebrated his success while thousands of Americans cried for their loved ones. Its time to reach out to the katrina victims who where held captive in a hell with no way out, and help them get back home. Its time for our troops to be brought home to their familys. It' time for a change. I made this video because John McCain has proven he will not bring that change. I believe with all my heart that Barack Obama has the intelligence, judgment, moral values and the drive that will take this country in the right direction, and bring the change we need.
Elitist Barrack Obama - The Truth comes out! Listen to Barrack Obama express his absolute contempt for the average American (his comments are OBVIOUSLY DIRECTED AT WHITE AMERICA). We "cling" to religion as he professes his love for Jesus? We "cling" to guns because we believe in the 2nd ammendment? He is right about one thing, we do not want the illegal labor draining our taxes or slave labor from China making our products. This scum bag has the balls to say he is against NAFTA? And we thought McCain was out of touch with America?
