Paul the octopus, one of the stars of the 2010 World Cup thanks to his 'psychic' abilities, has died. The mystic mollusc gained world prominance, after correctly predicting the outcome of all of Germany's results this summer. By climbing into a box bearing a nations flag, he even went on to predict Spain would win the final. It remains a mystery whether Paul saw this coming... He died of natural causes, and his owners plan to set up a special memorial in the oceanarium where he lived.

It's Spain! Oracle Paul the Psychic Octopus predicts Spain will beat Holland and win the World Cup. The world-famous octopus could be seen sitting on a tank marked with a Spanish flag for only a few minutes before grabbing out a mussel and devouring it, while completely ignoring the Dutch tank indicating a Spanish victory in Sunday's final match in the World Cup. Paul correctly predicted Germany's wins over Argentina, England, Australia and Ghana and the country's loss to Spain and Serbia.
Octopus oracle Paul is predicting Germany will win over Uruguay at the World Cup in the fight for third place. (July.9)
Octopus predictor Paul has seemingly decided he does not want to make it into the sushi menu and returned Germany the right to another victory in the World Cup tournament. When given the choice between Germany and Uruguay, who will fight for third place on Saturday, he picked his home team. So far all of Paul's predictions have proved to be correct. One last prediction left for him this season is who will get the champion's title on Sunday: Spain or the Netherlands.
A psychic German octopus called 'Paul' could find himself on the menu if frustrated football fans get their way. Famous for predicting world cup winners, he has a 100 percent record following Spain's defeat over Germany yesterday. But now his owner has received death threats and even recipe suggestions from football supporters who have found their teams on the wrong side of his predictive powers. Paul will no doubt suck up the pressure ahead of Germany's game against Uruguay this Saturday.

while trying to get video of a wild octopus, it suddenly dashed towards me and rips my shiny new camera from out of my hands, then swims off, all while the camera is recording! he swam away very quickly like a naughty shoplifter. after a 5 minute chase, I placed my speargun underneath him and he quickly and curiously grabbed hold of the gun as well, giving me enough time to reach in and grab the camera from out of his mouth. I didn't feel threatened at all during the whole ordeal. he seemed to be fixated on the shiny metallic blue digital camera. the only confusing behavior was how he dashed off with it like a thief haha. cheeky octopus. songs by: Vincent Gillioz - Car Chase Dalmatian Rex and the Eigentones - Octopus I Love You thanks for watching, and remember life is too short to spend it in front of a tv or at the shopping mall......get out there and live it up! these moments of beauty exist every single second in nature. love, vic

Octopuses are thought to be one of the most intelligent invertebrates and can change the color and texture of their skin to blend in with rocks, algae, or coral to avoid predators. But until now, an octopus with the ability to actually assume the appearance of another animal had never been observed. "Having studied many octopus species in the wild, I am never surprised by the color and shape change capacities of these animals," said Mark Norman of the Melbourne Museum in Australia. "However, this animal stood out as it was the only one we've encountered that goes beyond camouflage to take on the guise of dangerous animals." Norman and fellow researchers Julian Finn of the University of Tasmania in Australia and Tom Tregenza of the University of Leeds in England describe the octopus mimic in the September 7 issue of Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. "This," Tregenza said, "is a rather dramatic animal." Talented Impersonator Mimicry is a fairly common survival strategy in nature. Certain flies, for example, assume the black and yellow stripes of bees as a warning to potential predators. But the adaptable octopus is the first known species that can assume multiple guises.

Music video for Octopus i love you by Dalmatian Rex and the Eigentones, Taken from their 3rd album Psychedelic Monsters release on the Music 4 Goldfish label.
I'm back with a brand new video, this time with Syd Barrett's Octopus from his 1970 solo debut, 'The Madcap Laughs'. 'Octopus', also known as 'Clowns and Jugglers', was written by Syd Barrett in 1968, and eventually recorded in June 1969. The song is also notable for being his only solo single with "Golden Hair" as the B-Side, released on November 14, two months before the album. After leaving Pink Floyd in 1968, Syd Barrett attempted to record new material throughout 1968 to 1969 at Abbey Road Studios. Peter Jenner, with ex-manager of Pink Floyd, helped produced some of these sessions. While many of the sessions failed to kick off, eventually Malcolm Jones, an EMI executive, helped Syd to complete some of the songs for the new album. The session musicians for 'The Madcap Laughs' featured musicians from bands such as, 'The Soft Machine' and 'Humble Pie'. While Syd still remained erratic, he managed to successfully complete most of the recordings produced by Jones. Eventually, Jones left the production on the album and Dave Gilmour along with Roger Waters came to produce the rest of album. Gilmour and Waters also provided extra overdubs to Barrett's songs playing bass and guitar. After several months, the album was finally released on January the 3rd, 1970, and was fairly well-reviewed by critics at the time. The footage was ultilized from two sources, 'Pink Floyd - Jugband Blues Promo, 1967' and 'Syd Barrett's Home Movie, 1970'. I do not own the copyright for the audio or ...

This experimental clip was one of my first attempts at using camera matched data in After Effects. I was also learning the ropes at color correction and coloring the final product for effect. I am pleased with the results considering that there was virtually no planning involved and the video was shot out of the windshield of my car as I drove by ;-) (update 2010) Find my complete demo reel at vitaminestudio.com

--- English --- The Indonesian Mimic Octopus, Thaumoctopus mimicus. This fascinating creature was discovered in 1998 off the coast of Sulawesi in Indonesia, the mimic octopus is the first known species to take on the characteristics of multiple species. This octopus is able to copy the physical likeness and movement of more than fifteen different species, including sea snakes, lionfish, flatfish, brittle stars, giant crabs, sea shells, stingrays, jellyfish, sea anemones, and mantis shrimp. This animal is so intelligent that it is able to discern which dangerous sea creature to impersonate that will present the greatest threat to its current possible predator. For example, scientists observed that when the octopus was attacked by territorial damselfishes, it mimicked the banded sea snake, a known predator of damselfishes.
