Amy Palmiero-Winters, the recent recipient of the James E. Sullivan Award, presented to the nations top amateur athlete, paid a visit to pediatric patients at The Childrens Center in Bethany, Oklahoma. Palmiero-Winters will participate in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon this weekend. Palmiero-Winters spent time talking and coloring with patients in the Centers Pediatric Medical Rehabilitation Unit (PMRU), a unique rehab unit for children who have experienced traumatic injuries, such as brain or spinal cord injuries. Palmiero-Winters is a Team USA ultramarathoner and lower-leg amputee. The 37-year-old mother was injured in a 1997 motorcycle accident. After 27 surgeries, she had her left leg amputated below her knee. She has won many awards, and became the single-leg below-the-knee amputee world record holder in more than a dozen events.

So we found out that we're playing at Toby Keith's I Love This Bar and Grill (in Oklahoma City and Thackersville) this weekend, which we are very excited about. However, that happened to fall on the weekend of the Music City Marathon that Emily has been training so hard for over the past few months. SO...we decided to create our own little makeshift marathon in Nashville for Emily to run. And she did a great job.

Kevin Webster and Richard Berry, Cox Communications network technicians, started hanging the 168 banners of those who were killed in the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Building on April 19, 1995, that line the 26.2 mile course of the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. Cox has installed the banners for the past decade. Runners report these banners are their inspiration as they endure the course that runs from the Memorial site to Lake Hefner and back. The Marathon is the Memorial's largest annual fundraiser and helps to maintain the 3.3 acre Memorial and Museum.
