Facing elimination, "The Dream" carries his team to victory with a stellar performance. Hakeem Olajuwon: 37pts (18-33fgs), 17reb, 3blks www.basketball-reference.com
In an effort to take his game to the next level over the summer, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant(notes) solicited help from of one of the greatest players of all time — and personal favorite — Hakeem Olajuwon. A week before training camp in September, the master of "The Dream Shake" gave Bryant a two-hour lesson on everything from head fakes and ball fakes to spin moves and jab steps. And judging by the looks of Kobe's moves during Wednesday's win over the Rockets, the star pupil was paying close attention in class. Jeff Eisenberg of The Press-Enterprise: Each time he backed down Houston's Shane Battier(notes) in the post and then deftly spun around him for a layup Wednesday night, Bryant jogged up court staring into the same pocket of fans seated courtside across from the scorer's table. The man who met his gaze knew exactly the message Bryant was trying to convey. "He looked at me to confirm, 'I'm using what you taught me,'" Olajuwon said. "That was the greatest gift for me. It was wonderful." Here's something to think about (courtesy of SLAM): After 14 successful years in the league, Kobe can — and still wants to — learn from The Dream, yet Andrew Bynum is done with Kareem Abdul Jabbar after just a few injury-plagued seasons. File under reason number 6947 why Kobe Bryant is a beast.

1994 WCSF G4 famous in your face
Hakeem was, along with Michael Jordan, the best combination of skill, athletic ability, agility, anticipation, and versatility I've seen play the game. He was an impact on both sides of the ball -- as known for making a key block or defensive play as he was for making an impossible shot to win the game. In other words, he had the ability to control the game with his presence. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the 94 NBA Finals. The Knicks were no match for his combination of skill, athletic ability or versatility. This series is actually a little past his physical prime. He couldn't get to the rim as easily as in past years, but you can see how he adapted his game. The Dream Shake was on full display, as well as a number of fluid spin moves and nasty fadeaway jump shots. I also tried to show how his defensive presence altered the series. His timing and anticipation put himself in a position on the floor that bothered Ewing at all times -- even if he didn't get a block, steal or rebound. He pushed Ewing further and further away from the basket and forced the Knicks to play outside-in instead of inside-out. That cost the Knicks the series. Another key to the series was Hakeem's willingness/ability to draw double-teams and pass to wide open teammates for easy jumpshots. I think Houston set a record for number of 3pts made in a Finals series (although this may have been eclipsed in following years...I don't know). The reason Sam Cassell, Kenny Smith and Vernon Maxwell ...

Hakeem had 41/13/6/3. 1994 WCF game 2. Rockets won 104-99.
PART 2 OF2 - 2ND HALF AND OVERTIME A recap of all the points scored in Game One of the 1995 NBA Finals between the Houston Rockets and the Orlando Magic by Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon and Shaq along with highlights of other key moments in the game. This was a good hard-fought game between two of the best centers and three point shooting teams in the league at the time. The Rockets team included along with Olajuwon, Drexler, Kenny Smith, Mario Elie, Robert Horry, and Sam Cassell. Some key members of the Magic besides for Shaq were Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway, Nick Anderson, Horace Grant, Dennis Scott, and Brian Shaw. In the end, Nick Anderson missed 4 crucial free throws in a row to give Houston a chance to tie the game in regulation. Then with Houston down by 3 with a couple of seconds on the clock, Kenny Smith nailed his 7th three pointer of the game to send it into overtime after Dennis Scott was rejected at the buzzer by Robert Horry. In overtime, Scott hit a 3 to tie the game at 118 but then Hakeem made the game winning tip off the Clyde Drexler miss with .3 seconds remaining to win the game for Houston, 120-118. Houston would go on to sweep the Shaq-led Orlando Magic.

1986 NBA Finals Lost in the brilliance of Larry Bird was an interesting battle of two Hall Of Famers in the paint -- Kevin McHale and Hakeem Olajuwon. McHale, the resident king of footwork, mastered the drop-step, head fake and up-and-unders. Olajuwon, the young challenger, showed his promise on the biggest stage of all. Hakeem, who would later master the fadeaway jumpshot and the Dreamshake (a series of quick fakes designed to keep his defender off-balance), was still a force here in 86. He was raw, but still deadly enough to force the Celtics to double and triple him consistently. The battle down low between the master of footwork and his challenger was a nice

Hakeem Abdul Olajuwon (born on January 21, 1963) is a retired Nigerian American professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Olajuwon played center for the Houston Rockets, whom he led to back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995, and the Toronto Raptors.
hakeem olajuwon dunks and blocks
Arguably the greatest center to play the game of basketball. He dominate some of the greatest big men to ever play in the NBA, like Ewing, Kareem, Malone, Robinson, Barkley, and O'neal. Some of his accomplishments are: The all time leader for blocks. Olajuwon is also in the top ten in blocks, scoring, rebounding, and steals. He is the only player in NBA history placed in the top ten for all four categories. Olajuwon has recorded an NBA record nine five by fives in his career. Olajuwon ranks 7th all-time in steals and is by far the highest ranked center. One of the 4 players in NBA history to have ever recorded a quadruple-double. Only player in NBA history to have won MVP, Finals MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards in the same season (1994). For more information, look at en.wikipedia.org
I think most NBA fans know what happened here, but just to reset the situation, here's what was going on. The Rockets had gone just 47-35 in a difficult West, but had shocked Utah and Phoenix in the previous two rounds while coming from behind. They stole Game 1 against the deep and powerful Spurs, led by MVP David Robinson and a deep bench (featuring Chuck Person, JR Reid, Doc Rivers, Willie Anderson and Terry Cummings) on a Robert Horry three-pointer. Whatever. Game 1 is always important, but there have been countless times where the underdog took Game 1, only to lose Game 2 and the series (see Bulls/Pistons 1989, Sixers/Lakers 2001). Game 2 is usually where the favorite takes command and gets back into the series. Except Hakeem wouldn't let the Spurs do it. He completely dominated David Robinson and led the Rockets to a 106-96 win, allowing Houston to take control of the series. The craziest thing about this game is that David Robinson didn't play that badly. He started off extremely poorly, however, which allowed Houston to stay in it despite Olajuwon's own struggles. Had Robinson come out stronger, my guess is this would have been a blowout. Instead, Houston was able to stick around, and they took control by the end of the second quarter. Announcers: It's the local Spurs broadcast, so I don't know.

Hakeem Abdul Olajuwon (born Akeem Abdul Olajuwon on January 21, 1963) is a retired Nigerian-American professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Olajuwon played center for the Houston Rockets, whom he led to back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995. Olajuwon was drafted by the Rockets with the first overall selection of the 1984 NBA Draft. Olajuwon combined with the 7 ft 4 in (2.24 m) Ralph Sampson, to form what was dubbed the "Twin Towers" duo. The two led the Rockets to the 1986 NBA Finals, where they lost in six games to the Boston Celtics. After Sampson was traded to the Golden State Warriors in 1988, Olajuwon became the undisputed leader of the team. He led the league in rebounding twice (1989, 1990) and shot--blocking three times (1990, 1991, 1993). In the 1993-94 season he became the only player in NBA history to win the NBA's Most Valuable Player (MVP), Defensive Player of the Year, and Finals MVP awards in the same season. In 1996, Olajuwon assisted in the gold medal-winning performance of the United States national team and was selected as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. He ended his career the league's all-time leader in blocked shots. Listed at 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m), Olajuwon is generally considered one of the five greatest centers to ever play the game. Olajuwon averaged 20.6 points, 11.9 rebounds and 2.68 blocks in his rookie season. He finished as runner-up to Michael Jordan in the 1985 Rookie of the Year ...

Keep in mind this video is NOT meant to say that Yao = Hakeem. That's retarded. It's just meant to represent SOME similarities in their games, despite the fact that they're very different physically. Hakeem was recently quoted as saying he wants to work with Yao next summer if their schedules allow it and that was basically my inspiration for the video. I hope you like it.
