Classical music for your day. I haven't really posted much for lute other than that of material from Weiss, so here we go with music from Dowland. Dowland was an English composer known mostly for his compositions for lute music and his lute songs (single voice and lute). "In 1597 Dowland published his "First Booke of Songes" in London. This collection of lute-songs was set out in a way that allows performance by a soloist with lute accompaniment or various combinations of singers and instrumentalists. From 1598 Dowland worked at the court of Christian IV of Denmark, but he continued to publish in London. He returned to England in 1606 and in early 1612 secured a post as one of James I's lutenists. There are no compositions dating from the moment of his royal appointment until his death in London in 1626. While the date of his burial is recorded, the exact date of his death is not known." **% paintings: Paolo Uccello - (1397-1475) -"The Princess and the Dragon", c.1470 -"saint George and the Dragon", c.1456 --------------------------------------- John Dowland - (1563-1626) - Mr. Knights Galliard - 1'38" + - the Lady Laitons Almone - 1'19" ** - Orlando sleepeth - 1'24" # - {A Piece without Title} - 2'32" + - Galliard - 1'35" ** - Mrs. Winters Jumpp - 0'48" # - Mistris Whittes thinge - 0'58" ** performed by: Paul O'Dette lable: Harmonia Mundi **% = From Wikipedia +...8 course lute after Vendelio Venere (1582) by Paul Thomson, Bristol 1991 (unison stringing) **...8 course ...
Classical music for your day. Here we are with some more renaissance choral music from Flemish composer, Gombert. Of his music "Gombert is perhaps the most representative composer of the generation between Josquin and Palestrina, especially in the area of sacred music. He brought the polyphonic style to its highest state of perfection; if imitation is a common device in Josquin, it is pervasive in Gombert. Extended homophonic passages are rare in his sacred works, and he is particularly fond of imitation at very close time intervals, a technically very difficult feat (although he only rarely wrote strict canon). He preferred the lower voice ranges, and instead of the four voices which was usual at the time, he preferred larger groupings, such as five and six voice parts." ** painting - Henri Fantin-Latour: "Flowers and Fruits", 1865 --------------------------------------------- Nicolas Gombert - (c.1495-1560) - Salve Regina ('Diversi diversa orant') - 5'58" - Haec dies quam fecit Dominus - 4'50" ** wikipedia performed by: Henry's Eight label: Hyperion

Her debut public concert was in 1957, at Lahore Arts Council, before an elite crowd. Music lovers feted her beyond imagination. With each recital, she generated more and more public appeal. She was considered a specialist in singing the works of Faiz Ahmed Faiz. She has given such musical relevance to the ghazals of Faiz, that Bano and Faiz are apparently inseparable in popular imagination. Because of Faiz's imprisonment and hatred of the Pakistani Government towards him, Bano roused a strong crowd of 50000 people in Lahore by singing his passionate Urdu nazm, "Hum Dekhenge." Iqbal Bano can sing Persian ghazals with the same fluency as Urdu. She is always applauded in Iran and Afghanistan for her Persian ghazals. The Iranians and Afghans thronged to her shows in large numbers to hear her ghazals in their mother tongue. Once she said in an interview, that she had a collection of 72 beautiful Persian ghazals. Before 1979, there was a festival of culture called Jashn-e-Kabul every year in Afghanistan. Iqbal Bano regularly received a warm invitation to ...
Classical music for your day. Here we take a look at a short piece for orchestra that was originally intented for the military band format. From the cd booklette notes: "Vaughan Williams assembled the suite in 1923, scoring it for military band. The composer and renowned orchestrator, Gordon Jacob, made two arrangements of it the following year: one for brass band, and the other, which is heard here, for full orchestra."** An Englishman, born in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire on October 12, he was quite the prolific composer, writing music for film scores, opera, chamber and choral music and also writing symphonies. "He was also a collector of English folk music and song; this also influenced his editorial approach to the English Hymnal, which began in 1904, many folk song arrangements being set as hymn tunes, in addition to several original compositions."**~ **, cd booklette notes **~, Wikipedia paintings, in order: - Frederic Bazille, Family Reunion, 1867 - Jules Breton, 'Calling the gleaners home', 1859 - Maximilien Luce, The Quai Saint-Michel and Notre-Dame, 1901 -------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- Ralph Vaughan Williams - (1872-1958) - English Folk Song Suite -March: Seventeen come Sunday - 3'21" -Intermezzo: My bonny boy - 3'19" -March: Folk songs from Somerset - 3'50" performed by: Academy of St. Martin-in-the-fields with Neville Marriner label: Decca

This is one of my favorite classical songs, written by a great Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. This is a song of a girl, who is waiting for her loved one to come back, but meets him only, after many many , when they're both old. Soveig is a one of the main characters of Henrik Ibsen's play "Per Gynt". Hope you'll like the song!

Lavakusha movie song... too good
I have defretted my old classical guitar and i think it sounds "arabic", so i decided to record an improvisation trying to create an "ancient" Egyptian or Nubian atmosphere. This was recorded as a "one take only", and is just what came out, nothing planned.. (i didn´t notice that is almost 7 minutes long! haha). After i listened the recording, i think that this can be seen as three parts, the second part starts around 2:40 with the tremolo, which is a little faster and energic. For this i´m mostly influenced by the music i´ve heard of the great Hamza El Din. Hope you like it.

For Tablature Status, go to www.wkode.com Here it is. Most of you won't know this song unless you grew up in the 80's in hong kong or in a cantonese family. It's the theme song for the TVB drama 薛仁貴征東(sit yan gwai jing tung). CAUTION... Spoiler of the story below. If you plan on watching this series (if you can find it), read no further.....don't say I didn't warn you. The story is awesome, which takes place in the tong's dynasty, one of china's most dominant and prosperous periods, and one which is based on a true historical figure's life. I It's about a rich young man (sit yan gwai) born mute (cannot speak) whose family gets tricked out of all its fortune because of gwai, which forces gwai to start speaking as his father fades away and eventually dies (the mom passed away either before gwai was born or shortly afterwards). Gwai then gets employed by a rich family as an often mistreated servant who falls in love with the daughter of his master. The couple elopes and are shunned by the girl's family. Gwai is ridiculed and looked down upon by everyone as being dumb, useless and poor. He decides to join the army to feed his family before the birth of his son and was stationed in the cooking department of the army, the lowest level possible. He somehow ticks off the general of his unit (mostly because the general's daughter falls for Gwai) and therefore is given a hard time...with his accomplishments during the war deceivingly credited to the general instead of him. One ...

The Ride of the Valkyries, by Richard Wagner, in a classic recording with Wilhelm Furtwangler and the Vienna Philharmonic. Illustrations are by Arthur Rackham. "One golden summer in adolescence...I heard the 'Ride of the Valkyries' on a gramophone and saw Arthur Rackham's illustrations to The Ring." (CSLewis) The music: probably the most famous and instantly identifiable of Wagner's works is this short orchestral prelude from Die Walkure, the second opera in the monumental Der Ring des Nibelungen. It has gone on to enter popular culture, being used in many films, most notably the helicopter attack sequence in Apocalypse Now. In terms of composition it perfectly demonstrates Wagner's epic sense of drama, and also his masterful orchestration. The conductor: Wilhelm Furtwangler is probably unrivalled as an interpreter of the core Austro-German Romantic repertoire, setting benchmarks in the performance of Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Wagner, Bruckner and others. His recordings include two complete Ring Cycles, both of them classics. The illustrations: Arthur Rackham was one of the greatest illustrators at the turn of the 19th century, creating classic visions for fairy tales and fantasies (Alice, Peter Pan, etc.). His work on Der Ring des Nibelungen is often considered one of the finest visual depictions of Wagner's epic. Sound: sorry the quality isn't first class - the recording is nearly sixty years old! (Imagine what Furtwangler could do with digital surround sound ...
