"The Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls: You've Got to Know the Territory" Dr. Thomas Trapp, professor of religion and theology at Concordia, presents how the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, sold, evaluated and have been fought over. The first foray will examine the wider setting of the discoveries, such as where the scrolls were found, what materials and languages were used, what generally was found in what caves, how some scrolls could be pieced together, who has been responsible for publishing and interpreting the texts at different stages of the "game" during the past 60 years and what contribution the scrolls make to the study of the biblical text. Roughly one fourth (about 200) of the scrolls and scroll fragments are from biblical books. The Dead Sea Scrolls, which scholars believe were written between approximately 200 BC and 200 AD, lay hidden and forgotten for centuries until they were discovered in the 1950's in caves along the northwest shore of the Dead Sea. Altogether, archeologists have uncovered more than 600 scrolls and thousands of fragments in 11 caves around the ruins of an old Roman fortress in an area called Khirbet Qumran. The scrolls have been called the greatest manuscript discovery of modern times. They contain some of the oldest known fragments of the Christian Old Testament or Hebrew Bible. Some people believe the bible is the oldest book in the world. Others believe its the I Ching. So far, the oldest surviving book is the Diamond Sutra, published in 868 ad. This scroll was found in a walled-up cave in north-west China in 1907 and was printed hundreds of years before moveable type was discovered in Europe. These early books were a great way to get information and ideas to many people, with each book often exchanging hands many times. Fast forward to today, and we use the internet to exchange information. But even though we can read books in digital form on computers, most people still prefer to have a traditional book, and they still pass from person to person. Robert Valdes Age 62, of Adrian, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at his home. Robert was born in Summerfield Township on May 23, 1947. the oldest child of Adan and Damacia (Lara) Valdes. He graduated from Adrian High School with the Class of 1966. Robert was attending the Detroit Bible Institute College in Detroit where he was to graduate next year. An avid sports fan, Robert enjoyed U of M football, the Detroit Red Wings, NASCAR and local high school and college sports. He was a charter member of the Pentecostal Church of Michigan. Robert is survived by five brothers, Manuel (Sue) Valdez of Hudson, Eddie (Pam) Valdes of Hesperia, MI, Steve (Mary) Valdes ofcoloma, Anthony (Kim) Valdes of Adrian and David (Ann) Valdes also of Adrian; five sisters, Erlinda (Kevin) Jonio of Holland, MI, Rebecca (Don) Martin of Joliet, IL, Margret (Mark) Parker of Holton, MI, Elizabeth (Leslie) Hultin of vancleve, MS and Teresa (Jeff) Woods of Iowa. He is also survived by many treasured nieces, nephews and cousins as well as wonderful neighbors who were like part of the family, Bobby and Anita Taylor and Mary Berlanga. The Codex Sinaiticus is the oldest copy of the Bible that exists today. Its written in Greek and dates to the year 400 AD Its a treasure that is now available online almost in its entirety. Thanks to digital technology the codexs 800 pages can be seen in high definition. Its so old that scientists have not been able to recover all the books of the Bible, and only the Old Testament remains intact. For four years, experts in England, Russia, Germany and Egypt have worked to put the Bible online. Each one of these countries has a part of the manuscript. A German theologian discovered it in 1800 in the monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai desert in Egypt . Later, a part of the text was taken to Leipzig, Germany, and another to Russia after Czar Alexander II paid for the investigation. In 1930, Russia decided to sell part of the manuscript to England. As a result, the national library of that country has the part with the most pages.
