Warning on Proton Pump Inhibitors and Fracture Risk From: USFoodandDrugAdmin | August 12, 2010 FDA is cautioning healthcare professionals and patients that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may increase the risk of fractures of the hip, wrist and spine. The drugs' labeling will be revised to reflect these concerns. PPIs are used to reduce gastric acidity, and include Nexium (esomeprazole), Dexilant (dexlansoprazole), Prilosec (omeprazole), Zegerid (omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate), Protonix (pantoprazole), Aciphex (rabeprazole) and Prevacid (lansoprazole). The new safety information is based on FDA's review of several epidemiological studies. These studies found that patients who received high doses of the drugs or took them for a year or more had the greatest fracture risk. Since most of these patients were older than 50, the increased risk was observed mainly in this age group. Healthcare professionals prescribing proton pump inhibitors should consider the possibility of an increased fracture risk, and whether a lower dose or shorter duration of therapy might be possible. Patients at risk for osteoporosis should have their bone status managed, and should supplement their diets with adequate amounts of vitamin D and calcium. Patients taking prescription PPIs should understand the possibility of an increased fracture risk, but they should be told not to stop their medication without consulting their healthcare professional. If you are using any of these drugs, you may not be able to take Plavix, or you may need dosage adjustments or special tests during treatment. This is the story so far. Prince has been my dog for several years, but recently i ran into problems with my landlord and he asked me to re-home Prince. After much thought... i agreed to find a good home for Prince. After much consideration i decided to give him to a farmer who said he "loves all his dogs and even has his dogs in his will". I felt i was making the right decision and gave Prince to this farmer. After one month, i went to check on prince and noticed he had a few marks on him and was losing patches of hair. The farmer said he was in a fight with his OTHER guard dog and said it was a one off and would not happen again. I believed him and went on with my life. I went up a couple of days ago as i was passing the area and decided to check in on Prince ... this video is what i recorded when i was there. I decided to take him back home and deal with the landlord. I may have to re-home him again but i am looking to keep him after this experience. The farmer said he had Prince seen by a vet, and when i asked to see what medication he was on, he brought me out omeprazole which are the tablets that i am taking for heartburn. en.wikipedia.org I have him booked into the veterinary clinic for the day after tomorrow.
