Warning on Proton Pump Inhibitors and Fracture Risk From: USFoodandDrugAdmin | August 12, 2010 FDA is cautioning healthcare professionals and patients that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may increase the risk of fractures of the hip, wrist and spine. The drugs' labeling will be revised to reflect these concerns. PPIs are used to reduce gastric acidity, and include Nexium (esomeprazole), Dexilant (dexlansoprazole), Prilosec (omeprazole), Zegerid (omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate), Protonix (pantoprazole), Aciphex (rabeprazole) and Prevacid (lansoprazole). The new safety information is based on FDA's review of several epidemiological studies. These studies found that patients who received high doses of the drugs or took them for a year or more had the greatest fracture risk. Since most of these patients were older than 50, the increased risk was observed mainly in this age group. Healthcare professionals prescribing proton pump inhibitors should consider the possibility of an increased fracture risk, and whether a lower dose or shorter duration of therapy might be possible. Patients at risk for osteoporosis should have their bone status managed, and should supplement their diets with adequate amounts of vitamin D and calcium. Patients taking prescription PPIs should understand the possibility of an increased fracture risk, but they should be told not to stop their medication without consulting their healthcare professional. People using over-the-counter PPIs to treat ...
www.healthstride.net Ranitidine hydrochloride (Zinetac or Zantac) is a histamine H2-receptor antagonist that inhibits stomach acid production. It is commonly used in treatment of peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Ranitidine is also used alongside fexofenadine and other antihistamines for the treatment of skin conditions such as hives. Zantac (Ranitidine) was introduced in 1981 and was the world's biggest-selling prescription drug by 1988. It has since largely been superseded by the even more effective proton pump inhibitors, with omeprazole becoming the biggest-selling drug for many years. When omeprazole and ranitidine were compared in a study of 144 people with severe inflammation and erosions or ulcers of the esophagus, 85% to those treated with omeprazole healed within eight weeks, compared to 50% of those given ranitidine. In addition, the omeprazole group reported earlier relief of heart burn symptoms.

www.healthstride.net Plavix (Clopidogrel) is an oral, thienopyridine class antiplatelet agent used to inhibit blood clots in coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, and cerebrovascular disease. The drug works by irreversibly inhibiting a receptor called P2Y12, an adenosine diphosphate ADP chemoreceptor. Adverse effects include hemorrhage, severe neutropenia, and Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Plavix (Clopidogrel) interacts with the following drugs proton pump inhibitors (except pantoprazole), phenytoin (Dilantin); tamoxifen (Nolvadex); tolbutamide (Orinase); torsemide (Demadex); fluvastatin (Lescol); a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin), heparin, ardeparin (Normiflo), dalteparin (Fragmin), danaparoid (Orgaran), enoxaparin (Lovenox), or tinzaparin (Innohep); (Activase), anistreplase (Eminase), dipyridamole (Persantine), streptokinase (Kabikinase, Streptase), ticlopidine (Ticlid), and urokinase (Abbokinase). If you are using any of these drugs, you may not be able to take Plavix, or you may need dosage adjustments or special tests during treatment. In November 2009, the FDA announced that clopidogrel should not be taken with PPIs such as Prilosec (omeprazole) and Nexium (esomeprazole).
Courtesy of www.healthstride.net Nexium (Esomeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor developed and marketed by AstraZeneca which is used in the treatment of dyspepsia, peptic ulcer disease (PUD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Esomeprazole is the S-enantiomer of omeprazole (marketed as Losec/Prilosec), and AstraZeneca claims improved efficacy of this single enantiomer product over the racemic mixture of omeprazole. However, this greater efficacy has been disputed, with some claiming it offers no benefit from its older form. Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, gas, decreased appetite, constipation, dry mouth, and abdominal pain. More severe side effects are severe allergic reactions, chest pain, dark urine, fast heartbeat, fever, persistent sore throat, severe stomach pain, unusual bruising or bleeding, unusual tiredness, and yellowing of the eyes or skin. Proton pump inhibitors may be associated with a greater risk of hip fractures, clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. Patients are frequently administered the drugs in intensive care as a protective measure against ulcers, but this use is also associated with a 30% increase in occurrence of pneumonia

This is the story so far. Prince has been my dog for several years, but recently i ran into problems with my landlord and he asked me to re-home Prince. After much thought... i agreed to find a good home for Prince. After much consideration i decided to give him to a farmer who said he "loves all his dogs and even has his dogs in his will". I felt i was making the right decision and gave Prince to this farmer. After one month, i went to check on prince and noticed he had a few marks on him and was losing patches of hair. The farmer said he was in a fight with his OTHER guard dog and said it was a one off and would not happen again. I believed him and went on with my life. I went up a couple of days ago as i was passing the area and decided to check in on Prince ... this video is what i recorded when i was there. I decided to take him back home and deal with the landlord. I may have to re-home him again but i am looking to keep him after this experience. The farmer said he had Prince seen by a vet, and when i asked to see what medication he was on, he brought me out omeprazole which are the tablets that i am taking for heartburn. en.wikipedia.org I have him booked into the veterinary clinic for the day after tomorrow. Stay tuned for updates!

About the video: Autism encompasses a wide range of behavioural, communication, socialisation difficulties. The children in distress at the start show real situations as they are constantly seen for these children, all day long and every day. This level of distress is experienced by about 20% of the children in a group of 373 children. Self-injurious behaviours and communication issues are the most acute and severe sides of autism. Help is available, but it needs suitable research and funding. The children shown here have been helped and experience fewer episodes of self-injurious behaviours; however they remain autistic. Comprehensive support specific to each individual needs can be brought to assist these individuals. Testimonials from the parents of the children displaying self-injurious behaviours who have been included in the video. Bethanys story: Bethany is a beautiful autistic girl. She has daily pain, sometimes seven or eight times a day. She screams in agony pressing herself because of the extreme abdominal pain. She is unable to tell us properly because she cannot speak. When we realised that the self injurious behaviour was because of pain we started some remedies to help her. She started on 8 Gaviscon, 3 Omeprazole and 2 ranitidine per day. Since starting diet, nutritional supplements and LDN her pains have already begun to get better. She is now down to 3 Gaviscon, 2 Omeprazole and 1 ranitidine, and she continues to have gastric investigations on the NHS ...

Freshman Organic Chemistry (CHEM 125) The chemical mode of action of omeprazole is expected to be insensitive to its stereochemistry, making clinical trials of the proposed virtues of a chiral switch crucial. Design of the clinical trials is discussed in the context of marketing. Otolaryngologist Dr. Dianne Duffey provides a clinician's perspective on the testing and marketing of pharmaceuticals, on the FDA approval process, on clinical trial system, on off-label uses, and on individual and institutional responsibility for evaluating pharmaceuticals. Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Fall 2008.
Freshman Organic Chemistry (CHEM 125) Within a lecture on biological resolution, the synthesis of single enantiomers, and the naming and 3D visualization of omeprazole, Professor Laurence Barron of the University of Glasgow delivers a guest lecture on the subject of how chiral molecules rotate polarized light. Mixing wave functions by coordinated application of light's perpendicular electric and magnetic fields shifts electrons along a helix that can be right- or left-handed, but so many mixings are involved, and their magnitudes are so subtle, that predicting net optical rotation in practical cases is rarely simple. Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Fall 2008.
