See full episode at tiny.cc A very cold 2010 opilio crab season begins. Time Bandit has hired Jeremy Shelton as a greenhorn, and he takes the early hazing very well. On Northwestern, Edgar, who begins work on his 39th birthday, is suffering physically from years of abuse crabbing, putting Captain Sig in a tough position. Cornelia Marie begins the season in a repair dock, needing to repair the hull, propellers and drive shafts after running aground on a reef. Paul Edgrin is the new greenhorn on Wizard, and is already acquainted with Captain Keith. Captain Bill has something to prove, and three new deckhands, on Kodiak after a terrible king crab season. Northwestern gets a head start, but freezing spray forces the crew to drop all their pots early. The other boats who leave later quickly ice over, and have to begin chipping ice and dumping pots very quickly. Time Bandit doesn't bother baiting their first few strings. Jeremy is incredibly seasick. Kodiak makes it to its target grounds, but the frozen-over stack creates a challenge. When Wizard reaches its grounds, the weather reminds Keith of a year previous, when he nearly lost his crew to a rogue wave, so he makes sure the crew is extra careful. Cornelia Marie finally gets underway, but when they get to their grounds after an overnight cruise, their pots are heavily iced over. Jake volunteers to hang off the edge of the stack to hammer the ice off the sides of the stack.

Against better judgment, Time Bandit navigates the treacherous False Pass in the storm, and make it through safely. Northwestern continues to pull blanks attempting to hunt blue king crab. Things are no better when Edgar is briefly at the helm. After constant single-digit counts, Captain Sig finally gives up. Captain Keith's brother, Monte, takes the helm as Wizard tries to hunt bairdi crab. They find unprecedented numbers of keepers and meet their quota quickly, but their greenhorn Joel keeps lagging. Cornelia Marie is on its last strings in the brunt of the storm, and the crew works its hardest to get its last 20000 pounds of crab. Things get worse when their generator goes out, but a quick fix gets them back running, and they race to get their pots up. Kodiak is desparate to finish their quota, but their bad luck continues, and Captain Bill has to make one last trip to meet their quota. With the season over, the crews return to Dutch Harbor. Northwestern earns $50000 per deckhand on red king crab, while barely breaking even on blue king crab. Time Bandit takes $32000 per deckhand. Wizard gets $31000 per deckhand, but lets go of greenhorn Joel. On Cornelia Marie, the crew plays the shoe polish prank on Captain Phil after earning $27000 per deckhand. The Arctic Lady is fishing for opilio crab on a rough day in the Bering Sea. Her crew can be seen on the deck of this Alaskan crab fishing vessel in the Bering Sea hauling a crab pot on board. The crab is not King Crab, but it pays the bills, especially with a 300 million pound quota to catch. Towards the end of the season though, the crab were getting hard to find. Harris, 53, suffered a stroke on January 29th. He passed away February 9th. Sadly, its not much of a surprise to fans of the series. Phil suffered a life-threatening blood clot during the season in 2008. He returned for the second part of the season the opilio crab season in 2009, and it didnt seem that hed changed his unhealthy habits much. In any case, it appears as though Phil made it through the first part of the season the king crab season this time around. It should be interesting to see how the show deals with Phils death. D3 TV with Edgar Hansen of The F/V Northerwestern out on Saint Paul Island, The Bering Sea The Northwestern, a western rigged boat, was built in 1977 at Marco Shipyards in Seattle for the sole purpose of fishing King and Tanner Crab off of the coast of Alaska. It was christened Northwestern on November 5, 1977 by Snefrid Hansen, wife of then-captain Sverre Hansen and mother of the current owner/operators, Sig, Norman, and Edgar Hansen.
On the way back to Unalaska to deliver our catch of opilio crab, we came across the Arctic Lady, her crew still fishing in a near gale. Here she is, handling the waves quite nicely while running to the next pot in the string. February 1991
You can see the different kinds of crab up close in this video and learn how to tell them apart. We were fishing in an area where the opilio and bairdi crab intermingled and produced the hybrid crab. We loaded up with the hybrids and got a big fine for having too many "bairdi" crab on board - out of season. We did have at least one bairdi on board, as you can see. The eyes of bairdi are red and opilio are green. According to the regulations at the time, the hybrid crab have red eyes, but as you can see, under the sodium lights that we use at night, the eyes change color and look green. Also the hybrid mouth has characteristics of both bairdi and opilio, so it was a tough to sort through the piles of crab and pick out the hybrids. Each crewmember was fined $3000.00 and the owner was fined more for this load of crab. The regulations were changed after this, but it was too late for us!
