Jay, from buildaroo.com, interviews Marc from Scheuten Solar at the Intersolar Conference in San Francisco, CA 2009. Scheuten makes an industrial strength solar panel and has two basic products. One is the standard solar panel that is widely used and the other is a very beautiful glass product called Optisol. The standard module is called Multisol, which is a highly industrial strength module. This product can handle 110 pounds per square foot and is thus very popular in the Gulf Coast area where hurricanes often occur. This product was designed to withstand ice and snow but it works for high winds and hail as well. One important feature of this product is that it has a very narrow band for power production. Most panels are +/- 5%, but Scheuten is actually +/- 2.5 Watts, which is about +/- 1 1/4% and much lower variance in the product. Optisolar is a very exciting product because most architects want to hide the solar on the roof and this gives the architect the option of having beautiful solar paneling. Scheuten makes custom panels of the Optisol product and they also have standard sizes.
