On Wednesday, Oregon State University marine mammal experts found Willy inside an experimental floating capture cage with six other sea lions near the Newport docks. With the assistance of a Newport veterinarian Dan Lewer and Jim Burke, director of husbandry at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Rice and several others took a boat to the enclosure, confining five of the seven -- including Willy -- inside. Via The Oregonian 4/2/10 The sea lion had plastic stuck around its neck, which was cutting through the skin. The team was able to free the sea lion and let it return safely to the ocean.

*B-roll footage* An Oregon State University team worked quickly with the owners of Sea Lion Caves and federal authorities late Thursday to rescue a Steller sea lion tangled in a trawl net and trapped among coastal rocks. The Marine Mammal Stranding Network rescuers removed the netting and set the 250-pound animal free, preventing its likely death from starvation or trauma. Within minutes, the sub-adult sea lion, likely a female estimated to be about 4 years old, was swimming with dozens of others in the churning water at the entrance to Sea Lion Caves, one of Oregons most popular coastal tourist destinations.
University of Oregon football player LaMichael James has had his day in court and has been sentenced for harassment. James had previously pleaded not guilty to charges arising from a case of domestic assault last month. James was arrested on charges of strangulation, assault and harassment. In court Friday morning, he agreed to change his plea to guilty on one count of harassment. The other charges were dropped. James was sentenced to serve 10 days in jail, with credit for one day already served, 24 months of probation and he is to have no contact with the victim. In court, James apologized, saying the victim bears no responsibility for the incident. I am so sorry that she has been treated by some people as though she deserved blame for this. She does not. I ask people to treat her with respect. She has not done anything wrong," James said. Oregon Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and former player Garrett Embry are scheduled to answer burglary charges in court Friday afternoon at 1:30. Friday afternoon, U. of O. Head Football Coach Chip Kelly is expected to announce his decision on punishment for James and for Masoli, if Masolis case is resolved in Fridays court appearance.

Starting from move-in day, it's easy to feel at home at the UO. Student housing is based in residence halls, not dorms, because they're more than just a place to sleep. Choosing a residential Freshman Interest Group allows you to live alongside your classmates, or choose a special interest residence like an Honors, Music, or Multicultural Hall. Or just leave it up to fate! Either way, your hallmates will be your neighbors, your classmates, and your new best friends. And don't forget brain food: from cappuccino to burritos to stir fry, your meal points will buy you chow at any of seven dining venues, a far cry from the typical college cafeteria fare.
Blending equal parts urban and outdoors, Eugene is the classic college town, with a northwest twist. Eugene offers all the opportunities of a small city, including mass transit, museums, music, arts, and sports, all in a supremely bike-able location. Opportunities abound within the city limits for hiking, climbing, and boating in a picturesque setting, but Eugene is also a short distance from wilderness areas and National and State Parks. Engage the citys vibrant arts community, discover Lane Countys numerous fairs and festivals, or get your groove on at a concert featuring national acts or local talent.
From geology to Greek Life, scuba to swing dance, law to LGBTQA, the uo's over 250 student clubs and organizations offer dozens of ways to join in, team up, and meet a whole new group of friends. Join a cultural or political organization that makes you feel right at home...or one that expands your boundaries. In one single term—just ten weeks—you can browse the Street Faire, demonstrate at a political rally, plant flowers for the campus service day, dance in the Hawaii Club Lu'au, and compete in an intramural dodgeball tournament. And you'll do it all to the sounds of weekly outdoor a capella performances at the heart of campus.
The uo's stunning 295-acre campus is the perfect place for deep thinking, featuring both cutting edge laboratories and neo-classical columns...everything you'd look for in a college setting. The campus is an arboretum, with museums, libraries, laboratories, and lecture halls situated among over 3500 trees of more than 500 species. Bring in the harvest at the urban garden, explore the nearby historic cemetery, or walk along the banks of the Willamette River. The UO is a leader in sustainability efforts, and here on campus you'll find bio-roof gardens, solar cells lining classroom buildings, and even a student recreation center powered by workout machines.
The UO experience wouldn't be complete without rooting for the 18 Ducks teams, and students attend games and matches for free. At the University of Oregon, you'll be to see some of the highest profile college sports in the country. Or take it one webbed step further and join the Pit Crew, one of the loudest, most creative, and best-organized student spectator sections in higher education. The uo's state-of-the-art sports facilities include Autzen Stadium for football, PK Park for baseball and softball, and the soon-to-come Matthew Knight Arena for basketball and volleyball. And find out how historic Hayward Field has helped brand Eugene as tracktown, USA.
With six schools and colleges featuring more than 270 comprehensive academic programs, the uo's astounding array of course offerings focuses on everything from calculus to cartography, Brontë to biochemistry, nanotechnology to neurology, Russian to reporting, saxophone to supply chain. Each academic term, the UO offers an average of 2099 undergraduate classes, only 110 of which have more than 100 students. The UO is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, one of only 64 schools nationwide, and is also home to the Robert D. Clark Honors College, the oldest residential honors college in the nation.
Over 600 students, faculty, alumni and friends participated in a giant synchronized Thriller dance. People gathered outside Reser Stadium 30 minutes beforehand to practice/learn the dance moves. The event was organized by Brianne Kiso, Membership/Recruitment chair of osu's Student Alumni Association.
admissions.uoregon.edu Lone Pine Farms is a working farm, complete with a fresh produce market and livestock. The rural setting provides a break from the uo's urban bustle. The farm is a beautiful 20-minute drive from campus. Each fall, Lone Pine Farms designs an intricate corn maze.
