Alexander ovechkin... NHL history. Ovechkin was the first overall selection in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Due to the 200405 NHL lockout, he began play in the 200506 NHL season, in which he won the Calder Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year. During the 200708 season, he led the NHL with 65 goals and 112 points to capture the Rocket Richard and Art Ross Trophies. That season he also won the Lester B. Pearson Award as the top player voted by the NHL Players' Association and the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's MVP. In 2009, he again won the Hart, Pearson, and Richard awards. He is the only player to win all four awards since the Rocket Richard Trophy's inception in 1999. In late October of the 200809 NHL season Ovechkin returned home to Moscow to visit his ailing grandfather, missing only the second game of his career up to that point, snapping a consecutive streak of 203 games played.[16] On February 5, 2009, Ovechkin scored his 200th goal against the Los Angeles Kings becoming only the fourth player in the NHL to reach the milestone in four seasons, joining Wayne Gretzky, Mike Bossy and Mario Lemieux.[17] On March 19, he scored his 50th goal of the season, becoming the first Washington Capitals player to reach the 50-goal mark three times.[18] He finished the campaign with 56 goals to capture his second consecutive Rocket Richard Trophy, joining Jarome Iginla and Pavel Bure as the third player to win the award twice and the second player after Bure (2000 and 2001) to ...

Ovechkin nails Campbell and gets a three game suspension.
It's basically the same thing Maxim Lapierre did on the last Canadiens - Sharks game. Lapierre got 4 games of suspension, Ovechkin gets 2. I think rules aren't well applied in the NHL. Referees should meet together and fix thoses problems.

THN Puck Panel discusses the two-game suspension of Alex Ovechkin. Find out if they think the punishment was fair.
So called little push by Ovechkin on Brian Campbell resulting in a two game suspension by the league. Not enough in my opinion. Ovy clearly pushes will all his weight from a braced position and fully extends his arms. No way to defend from this kind of illegal contact, no need for it in the game. I love hitting and fighting, but why do we need blatant headshots, knee on knee, and boarding hits which can ruin a career or affect a teams season. Play within the rules and respect your profession by acting like a decent human being.
Steve Downie was suspened for 20 games during the preseason of 2007; Now he has done it again ;; one large hit ;;; & it was on poor Sidney Crosby ! Sidney was doing nothing wrong and Downie came up and hit him;; The league has fined Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Steve Downie $1000 for taking down Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby during Sunday's game. Downie said he spoke to league disciplinarian Colin Campbell on Tuesday morning. He said there will not be a suspension.

NHL.com Quick Pick: Alex Ovechkin has been suspended two games by the NHL for a reckless hit on Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell.
Ovechkin boards Campbell, get's a boarding major and then he gets ejected from the game. From NHL.com Washington Capitals star forward Alex Ovechkin, serving a two-game suspension for a hit on Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell Sunday, issued the following statement Tuesday. "I am very sorry that Brian was injured and I hope he is able to return to his team soon. NHL hockey is a physical game. We all play hard every time we are on the ice and have battles each shift in every game we play so we can do our jobs and win. As players we must accept responsibility for our actions and I am no different but I did not intend to injure Brian and that is why I was disappointed with the NHL's decision yesterday. Every time I have the honor to play for my team, I will continue to do what I have done since I was taught to play. I will play hard, play with passion and play with respect for my teammates, opponents and fans. I look forward to returning to my team and doing everything I can to be the best player I can be."

Alexander Mikhaylovich Ovechkin (Russian: Александр Михайлович Овечкин; pronounced [ˈɐlʲɪkˌsɑndr ɐˈvʲetʃkɪn]; born September 17, 1985) is a Russian professional ice hockey left winger and team captain of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). In January 2008, he signed a thirteen-year contract extension worth $124 million with the Capitals, the most lucrative contract in NHL history. Ovechkin recieves a 2-game suspension after collision with 'canes Gleason.
Alex Ovechkin throws a knee-on-knee hit on Tim Gleason, but he gets injured along with Tim Gleason. And he got ejected again, second time in three games. The NHL gave him a two-game suspension as a result of the hit. (Washington Capitals @ Carolina Hurricanes - November 30, 2009)
Alex Ovechkin shows another part of his dirty side, slew-footing Rich Peverley. He got fined for the play, but in my opinion, i don't think a fine affects a player that much. A one game suspension could possibly do the job.
Update: No suspension for Malkin ;-) www.nhl.com
This will be interesting to see if Matt Cooke gets a fine or suspension for this knee on knee hit considering the NHL did nothing to it's golden boy Alexander Ovechkin for his cheap shot on Sergei Gonchar.
This week on Transit Sports we take a look into the questions that have been eating away at the sports world this week. The Questions: -"Will Jim Balsillie finally get his own hockey club, or will Gary Bettman have his way?" -"The Ovechkin desth threat, was it really that big of a deal or a stupid teenager's Internet rant blown out of proportion?" -"Should the New York Islanders keep the number 1 pick or trade it?" -"Will Brett Favre go to the Minnesota Vikings and what will that mean for Green Bay Packers Fans?" -"Will Brett Favre stay retired and hang out with his kids?" -"Should athletes be able to retire as many times as they please?" -"Does Manny Ramirez deserve a 50 game suspension?" -"Was he really taking steroids or just taking ovulation pills? -"Are steroids that big of a deal, just an aftermath of the steroid nation the MLB used to be or are we living a modern day witch-hunt?" and don't miss our new segment on Michael Dwayne Vick. Alexander Ovechkin's knee on knee hit only draws a 2 minute tripping penalty, this very closely resembles the hit Ulf Samuelson put on Cam Neeley and was crucified forever as a result. There is a penalty known as "kneeing." And "intent to injure." If this had been any other player there would at minimum be a suspension.
