Verkhoyansk, Russia, December 2006. Temperature -40 C/-40 F. At 67.6 Northern latitude, Verkhoyansk lies above the Arctic circle and near winter solstice, the sun doesn't rise above the horizon for weeks. Verkhoyansk fights with Oymyakon over the epithet as the World's coldest inhabited place, and it was here that the coldest official temperature on the Northern Hemisphere was recorded in 1885: -67.8 C/-90.0 F. Oymyakon has an unofficial record of -71 C/-95.8 F.
Well, this video was created by my friends, local adventure cyclists, namely Maverick (editing), Mik (back vocal), Marat Zalyalov (in the video), others. The video is about their travel from Yakutsk to Oymyakon, the Pole of Cold, in March 2007. Pictures are fine, but singing is totally amateurish :) Whatever! Grown-up(?) men playing outdoors with hot water in the middle of the night. Oymyakon, Russia, 2 January 2009. At -50 C, even exhaled breath can freeze. If you listen carefully, you can actually hear this phenomenon as a quiet crackle or noise between 1:23 and 1:32 in the clip, when microscopic ice crystals immediately form from the moisture in my breath on my exhaling near the microphone. Oymyakon is one of the coldest inhabited places on Earth.
The house I lived in. Oymyakon, Eastern Russia, 1 January 2009. Oymyakon is one of the coldest inhabited places on Earth.
Short stop with car at shaman sacrificial pole between Tomtor and Oymyakon, Eastern Russia, January 1 2009. Outside temp ca -45 C. The man in red parka refused to leave a cigarette to the genius and two weeks later fell seriously ill with heart failure! Don't mess with the spirits... (He has now recovered)
