Robert Fisk is a wise journalist with knowledge on the middle east like no one else has. He talks about his motivation to write stories on the terrible issues in the region the way he does. He is a very reasonable man who puts happenings in their historical context. This gives you great understanding about for example the israelian palestinian conflict. You have to know history, instead of just being able to read the headlines. Because this will only lead you away from bigger understanding. Headlines and death tolls say nothing unless you know the context. Please go find yourself a copy of one or more of his books and read them. He is an exellent writer who is able to show you the world behind the headlines.

At the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels Sweden's Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Bildt spoke about the EU's role in helping to find a two state resolution to the ongoing Israel - Palestine conflict. The Council this afternoon is set to be dominated by the subject following last weeks appeal by a number of eminent ex European Commissioners and leaders, that Ms Catherine Ashton adopt a hardline approach to Israel's continued settlement building on disputed Palestinian territory. The group has sent Ms Ashton a formal letter asking 'ministers to set an ultimatum of April 2011 for Israel to cease building or see the Union seek an end to the existing US-led peace talks in favour of a UN solution. Of the voices condemning the EU's response to Israel in this situation, Javier Solana, Madam Ashton's predecessor has also spoken out.

Inside the Vatican Apostolic Palace, Pope Benedict XVI received Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The president gave the Pope a tiled scene of old Jerusalem. After the meet and greet, both heads of state discussed- in private-the troubled situation in the Middle East. The Vatican says the discussion focused specifically on the need to find a just and lasting solution to the long standing Israel-Palestinian conflict. The Presidents visit comes after days of protests in the West Bank and Gaza. Protestors criticized the presidents decision to delay sending a report to the UN General Assembly, the report accused Israel and Hamas of war crimes. The conflict between Israel and Palestine has lasted more than six decades. After his visit to the Holy Land in May, the Pope urged cooperation and mutual respect between all sides and said he believes a two state solution could be a reality. MC

Bishara studies at Humboldt University in Germany, is head of the philosophy department at Bir Zeit University, and is senior researcher at the Van-Leer Institute in Jerusalem. He was one of the founders of the National Democratic Assembly, or Balad. He describes himself as a humanist, a democrat, a liberal, and a neo-nasserite.
