This is the story of the last Passenger Pigeon on Earth. Passenger Pigeons used to fly in flocks of over a billion birds. They roamed all over this continent, and into Canada and Mexico. If a flock was to fly over your neighborhood, it would literally darken the skies for a week or more. If they were to land in a forest or something in your neighborhood, when they would rise the next morning it would look like it had snowed from maybe two or three inches of droppings. They were hunted for their plumage and their edible meat. By the end of the 1800s there was only fourteen left, and by 1914 there was only two left. They were in the Cincinnati Zoo. It was a male and a female, and the last to die was the female, and they had given her the name of Martha. This is the story of that. High above the trees and the reeds, like rainbows they landed soft as moonglow. In greens and reds, they fluttered past the windows. But nobody cared or saw... 'til the hungry came in crowds, with their guns and dozers. And soon the peace was over. God, what were they thinking of? On and on, 'til dreams come true. You know a piece of us all goes with you... The birds went down. They fell, and they faded to the dozens. 'Til in a Cincinnati zoo was the last one. Yes, all that remained was the last with a name of Martha. Very proud, very sad, but very wise. And though lines filed by, there were few who cared or could be bothered How could anyone have treated you harder? And it was all for a dollar or ...

This is one of two poems Angie used to compete in Finals, May 2010. Poem: The Revolution is You By: Angie Ziobro You preach and pray and talk about revolution every god damned day but where is this revolution you claim where is this battle you get scars from what is this balancing game that you play? I see the trees toppling too you see I pray and cry on their stumps and wonder why? why now, why me...why you but when the fuck is this revolution going to revolute? I'm holding a gun but too tired to shoot You preach and pray and hand out books quoting poets, authors, dreamers, dead schemers but where was the protest to save that tree the one that had roots deeper than your preaching could ever be? How can I make you revolutionists finally see? The battle is here, the battle is me The battle is you too if you let it be The battle is us, the fighters with lighters and beer bottles filled with flammable rage the battle is the generation they forgot to name Yeah, you preach and pray and talk of revolution but I'm still waiting for your contribution You pull on your Gandhi the whole world will be blind bullshit while letting CEOs poison and rapers be rapists. I don't buy the pacifistic load of crap Even Saint Peter knew when to act. Where were you when the whale was harpooned when the dolphins were slaughtered where were you when the mothers screamed for lost lovers lost daughters where were you and your protests when the woman was raped and left alone to die in a back alleyway ...

This is a response to the many animal-snuff videos that get passed off as "hunting" scenes, and are somehow allowed by YouTube's screening process. I'm not anti gun or against (sustainable) sustenance hunting, just tired of people who take out their ego-deficiencies on wildlife, especially when they laugh as the animal dies. They are scumbags in any civilized context. It's another case of online "free speech" showcasing the worst of humanity, as if we haven't seen enough evil during wars and genocides. Those who flagged a previous version of this video should post a message explaining their REAL motives. I suspect they couldn't handle seeing their personas exposed without cover stories about harvesting & culling, minus the context of Man throwing nature out of balance in the first place. ...... Human nature hasn't changed since the days of the Great Plains bison massacre and extinctions caused by market hunting, eg the passenger pigeon. Web-search the phrase "hunted to extinction" if you're in denial of the facts. Many modern shooters have forgotten that those practices were stopped by legal action, not good will. They take it for granted that such laws exist, even though their predecessors protested them. They also claim to have a better understanding of ecology (than scientists) by mere virtue of stalking and shooting a narrow range of species in specific areas. It's mostly self-serving, prideful talk. They miss the irony of centuries of unnecessary killing, which ...

Set among the coalfields of Eastern Kentucky, 'Passenger Pigeons' is a story about dealing with loss and an ambiguous future in the dark hills of Appalachia. The film quietly interweaves four separate story lines over the course of a weekend as the town copes with the death of a local miner. Themes such as mountaintop removal, pride, fatalism, and wariness of the outside are delicately used to portray isolated life in modern Appalachia.
Aldo Leopold wrote an essay for the dedication of the first monument in the world to honor an extinct species: the Passenger Pigeon. One year later he died, and his essay was published posthumously in his classic environmental treatise: Sand County Almanac. Connie Barlow visited the Passenger Pigeon Monument in 2003, at Wyalusing State Park in the remote SW corner of Wisconsin. Here she reads excerpts of "On a Monument to a Pigeon", while making a pilgrimage to this "Sacred Site of the Epic of Evolution." Connie often recites one particular quotation from this essay in her church sermons as an evolutionary evangelist; it is where Leopold speaks of "the odyssey of evolution." You can sample photo-essays of other Epic of Evolution pilgirmages by Connie Barlow at her website, TheGreatStory.org
