Paul Cézanne - (19 January 1839 -- 22 October 1906) was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century.

This canvas is one of a set of plein-air paintings produced by Cézanne in Aix-en-Provence towards the end of his life. In it, Cézanne's gardener, Vallier, poses against the balustrade on the terrace of the artist's new studio, close to Les Lauves. Though dressed in the plain blue work-clothes of the Provençal peasant, the sitter conveys a sense of strength and solidity, and occupies most of the picture. The vertical thrust of the figure is offset by the strong horizontal plane of the ochre-coloured parapet. By applying thinned oil paints with transparent, geometrical brushstrokes, Cézanne breaks the picture down into small planes of colour. The serene, formal arrangements of earlier years starts to disintegrate, as form and colour become inseparable in Cézanne's quest to capture the inner structure of things.

This insightful portrait of Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne (K100624) is available as part of a series of over 40 documentaries on art and fashion icons from Arthaus DVD. Cézanne counts as the father of modern painting. Far from Paris, in the South of France, his obstinacy as man and artist made him a pioneer of a new way of seeing. Returning always to the same sujets the Mont Sainte-Victoire, bathing figures, or still lifes he abandoned central perspective, distorted body-shapes and broke all the traditional rules of landscape painting. Aided by experts, and descendants of the artist, Matthew Collings gives a thorough introduction to Cézannes life and work, exploring the lifelong artistic quest of the man whom Picasso called my only master.

This is the last of four presentations on Paul Cézanne. Cézanne, the great French post-impressionist painter, was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1839. His marvelous use of design and color united in his paintings to help form a bridge between the impressionist painters and the new growing art form called cubism. Cézanne went to Paris in 1861 where he met Impressionist Camille Pissarro, and the two became friends. Cézanne's interest in simplifying forms to their natural essentials led to a number of fascinating studies -- bathers, still lifes, and portraits. Here are several of his landscapes, including a full series in which a single mountain, Montagne Sainte-Victoire at Estaque, is featured. He died in 1906 after suffering diabetes for 16 years. Music is Claude DeBussy's "Claire de Lune," played by guitarist Julian Bream.

While I did not cover the TVG train trip to Aix-en-Provence in this online movie, I did capture the overall activities I did in Aix-en-Provence the first day we arrived. You get Paul Cezanne's studio - where I touched the jacket, robe and cap of the Artist - who everyone knows is my favorite artist. For dinner - we were treated to a fabulous local restaurant whose name I don't recall. One of my party, Catlin, let loose with her comedian style - to end a wonderful, wonderful first day here in Aix.
