Luciano Pavarotti Caruso..

(Lucio Dalla) From "Pavarotti & Friends" "Pavarotti International" Charity Gala Concert 1992 Decca
"Caruso" is a haunting song, written in 1986 by Italian singer-songwriter; Lucio Dalla. Controversially, the song depicts the pains and longings of a dying man, looking in to the eyes of a girl who was very dear to him. This song is most likely a way of romanticizing Enrico Caruso's, the famous Italian tenor, last days in Sorrento and Napoli. "Caruso" has been covered by several performing artists since it's infancy; including: Luciano Pavarotti, Lara Fabian, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Julio Iglesias and Italian pop icon, Mina. I hope you all enjoy my rendition of "Caruso", which has become quite personal to me. Thank you all for your continued support! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lyrics (English Translation): Here where the sea sparkles, and a strong wind blows, on an old terrace overlooking the gulf of Sorrento, a man holds a little girl in his arms after he's been crying. He clears his throat and sings the song again. I love you so much; so very much, you know. It's a bond, now, you know, that thaws the blood in the veins. He looked at the lights, out at sea, and thought about the nights in America. But they were only the lamps of fishing boats and the white of wake. He felt the pain of the music. He got up from the piano, but when he saw the moon come out from behind the clouds death seemed sweeter to him. He looked into the little girl's eyes - those eyes as green as the sea, then suddenly a tear fell and he ...

LUCIANO PAVAROTTI

English translation: Here, where the sea shines and the wind howls, on the old terrace beside the gulf of Sorrento, a man embraces a girl after the tears, then clears his throat and continues the song: I love you very much very, very much, you know; it is a chain by now that heats the blood inside the veins, you know... He saw the lights out on the sea, thought of the nights there in America, but they were only the fishermen's lamps and the white wash astern. He felt the pain in the music and stood up from the piano, but when he saw the moon emerging from a cloud, death also seemed sweeter to him. He looked the girl in the eyes, those eyes as green as the sea. Then suddenly a tear fell and he believed he was drowning. I love you very much, very, very much, you know; it is a chain by now that heats the blood inside the veins, you know... The power of opera, where every drama is a hoax; with a little make-up and with mime you can become someone else. But two eyes that look at you, so close and real, make you forget the words, confuse your thoughts, so everything becomes small, also the nights there in America. You turn and see your life through the white wash astern. But, yes, it is life that ends and he did not think much about it, on the contrary, he already felt happy and continued his song: I love you very much, very, very much, you know; it is a chain by now that heats the blood inside the veins, you know...

The Three Tenors Concert - Live in Paris(1998) The song was written and sung in 1986 by Italian pop writer/singer Lucio Dalla. His yacht was broken and he had to stay in a hotel in Napoli for one night. And that was the hotel where Enrico Caruso died. He used the piano in the hotel to play/write the song... the same piano that Caruso played in his last days. And the song it''s just 'about Caruso' last days on earth, his love for a girl (his student). English Translation Here, where the sea shines and the wind howls, on the old terrace beside the gulf of Sorrento, a man embraces a girl after the tears, then clears his throat and continues the song: I love you very much, very, very much, you know; it is a chain by now that heats the blood inside the veins, you know He saw the lights out on the sea, thought of the nights there in America, but they were only the fishermens lamps and the white wash astern. Comparison of the renditions of Enrico Caruso (1908), Jussi Björling and Pavarotti. Unfortunately the Björling version I chose isn't very good or representative. To hear a good performance of the aria by Jussi Björling go here: www.youtube.com From Verdi's opera Rigoletto. English translation: Woman is flighty Like a feather in the wind, She changes her voice — and her mind. Always sweet, Pretty face, In tears or in laughter, — it is always lying. Refrain: Woman is flighty Like a feather in the wind, She changes the tone of her voice and her thoughts, And her thoughts! And her thoughts! Always miserable Is he who trusts her, He who confides in her — his unwary heart! Yet one never feels Fully happy Who on that bosom — does not drink love! Refrain: Woman is flighty Like a feather in the wind, She changes the tone of her voice and her thoughts, And her thoughts! And her thoughts!
Unfortunately I had to cut a bit off here and there to keep the video under 10 minutes. The Caruso version is digitally remastered and unfortunately the Pavarotti version is a bit unclear (had to pick the shortest one I could find).
This is the best performance ever.

Grande Luciano!! Descanse en Paz
