Today (Sept. 22, 2010) is the groundbreaking ceremony at Deer Creek Station in Brookings County, SD. Now, outside it's wet and dreary. But indoors, South Dakotans are celebrating a $405 million investment in their state. Even though inches of rain were falling, more than 150 neighbors stopped out at the Deer Creek Station site for the celebration. (Ron Harper): "You add up those facilities that we own, or those that we helped to become a reality, think of a wind farm, Basin Electric will have invested 1-point-2-billion-dollars in the state of South Dakota." Basin Electric's newest power plant will be fueled by natural gas. It will run during the hours when there's the most demand for electricity. (Jeff Nelson): "To come back, to throw the switch, and turn on what is an investment in our confidence in the future of rural America and rural South Dakota." This 2004 conversation was part of an event organized by Dr. Gloria Harper Dickinson for students in her First Seminar class. In connection with the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education, the students had the opportunity to do oral history interviews with 15 women who graduated from college before 1954. Over lunch, Prof. Kim Pearson had the opportunity to talk to the oldest of the women, Elyse White, who 96 years old at the time.

In the case of M*A*S*H*, Father Ted and The Office it's because the characters are so acutely drawn and their relationships so expertly infused with tension that comedy flows effortlessly from every situation they get into. In the case of My Family it's because of the poverty of aspiration of the writers and the remorseless insistence on sticking to the family sitcom formula. There must be other sitcoms less suited to a clips show but I can't think of them offhand. My Family: Reloaded provided us with various scenarios from the six-year run of the show. Ben and Susan Harper (luvvie stalwarts Robert Lindsay and Zoë Wanamaker) have the utterly predictable sitcom relationship. A stressed, middle-class man manipulated by his dominating wife. Ben is a dentist by day and a mild-mannered misanthrope by night - a diet Victor Meldrew. Susan is also misanthropic but more inclined to get excited about furnishings and the like. I'm not sure where the comic conflict between the two is supposed to be. Margaret Meldrew could not have been more different from her husband - she was a civilising force and comic foil in the relationship. Ben and Susan are too alike to have convincing arguments. Every row seems contrived and the put-downs could have been scripted for any one of a hundred sitcom couples. They have a thick son, Nick, played excellently by Kris Marshall. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that starting, January 1, 2008, the Goods and Services Tax will fall by another percentage point. As a result, from now on Canadians will pay only five per cent GST. Background: Stephen Harper was born in Toronto, the first of three sons of Margaret Johnston and Joseph Harper, an accountant at Imperial Oil.[1] He attended Northlea Public School, while living at 332 Bessborough Avenue in Leaside. Later, while living at 57 Princess Anne Crescent, he attended John G. Althouse Middle School and Richview Collegiate Institute, both in Central Etobicoke. He graduated in 1978, at the top of his class with a 95.7% average, and was a member of Richview Collegiate's team on Reach for the Top, a television quiz show for Canadian high school students.[2] Harper then enrolled at the University of Toronto but after two months he dropped out, then moved to Edmonton, Alberta, where he found work at Imperial Oil, in the mail room.[3] Later, he would advance to work on the company's computer systems. He took up post-secondary studies again at the University of Calgary, where he completed a Bachelor's degree in economics. At about 7 am we finished this film. My fellow classmates from Video Production II put it together and harassed our friends and family, but unfortunately did not win the competition. It is listed as a noir-ish film about a plucky detective.
