VANDALS have stolen cash and smashed windows with bricks at a Cottesloe shopping centre this morning. It's believed two people forced their way into the Cottesloe Mews Shopping Centre on Eric St just before 3.30am. The vandals broke numerous windows through the complex, ransacking cash registers and vandalising goods. A DVD rental store and fashion chains were targeted. An IGA shopping centre in the complex was also broken into. A cleaner who was in the IGA shop at the time of the break in confronted one of the vandals, who allegedly threw a brick at him, narrowly missing his head. Broken glass and bricks are strewn over the property this morning. Forensic officers are at the scene this morning. Cottesloe police are examining CCTV footage of the incident. www.perthnow.com.au

"Let me go!" - Drunk man tries to ride 5m (16ft) crocodile in Broome, WA..... A TOURIST in Western Australia is lucky to be alive after climbing into a crocodile enclosure in Broome and doing battle with 800kg (1700lbs) "Fatso'', a male 5 metre long predator..... The man, believed to be from the eastern states, was ejected from a local tavern before climbing the fence of a Broome crocodile park and entering the enclosure of the giant crocodile named Fatso. Police said the man, who was affected by alcohol, wanted to touch the crocodile and tried to sit on its back. The crocodile took exception and attacked the drunken intruder, who managed to escape with severe lacerations to his right leg..... The man made his way back to the nearby tavern to get help..... "He's absolutely lucky to be alive, this is a large male saltwater crocodile, who aren't renowned for letting people escape once they've got hold of them," Sergeant Haynes said. The man has been treated at the Broome Hospital, where he has undergone surgery and received dozens of stitches to a severe wound on his leg. Sexual deviant Dante Arthurs killed eight-year-old Sofia in a toilet cubicle at Livingston Marketplace Shopping Centre in Canning Vale on June 26, 2006. His act of indescribable evil changed the way parents behaved in WA. They felt paranoid about letting their children leave their side. WA was shaken further when it was revealed that three years before Sofia's murder police had arrested Arthurs over an attack against another eight-year-old girl in a Canning Vale park in December 2003. The girl was grabbed from behind and dragged towards trees but managed to bite the offender to free herself. Arthurs was charged with indecent assault and deprivation of liberty but after a review of the evidence the Director of Public Prosecutions discontinued the prosecution. The retiring Chief Judge of Western Australia's District Court Antoinette Kennedy has spoken out against mandatory sentencing and proposed stop and search laws..... Attorney General Christian Porter today said Judge Martino, who was appointed to the bench in November 2000, would replace Chief Judge Kennedy who has been a judge for more than 25 years. Judge Martino will officially take up the post on July 1 this year, but will act in the position from March 26 when Judge Kennedy takes leave. ``During his nine years on the bench he has demonstrated considerable legal acumen and an enormous capacity for judicial work, Mr Porter said. ``He is recognised as one of the leading lights on the District Court bench and has earned the admiration of his peers in the judiciary and members of the legal profession. ``As Chief Judge, he will be responsible for the overall management of the courts business and in providing leadership and direction for the courts members, an area he has particular strengths in. Walsh-McDonald was arrested early Tuesday and spent about 36 hours in custody following a secret police sting to track his movements. Walsh-McDonald was due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court later in the day facing four charges of driving under court suspension. He was released on $5000 bail with a similar surety when he appeared on Wednesday. Walsh-McDonald, 25, was arrested by Traffic Enforcement Group officers in Beach Rd, Mirrabooka at 6.55am on Tuesday morning after a three-week undercover operation. The Balga man was not behind the wheel, but was a passenger in a car when police swooped. Walsh-McDonald is banned from driving until June 2013 after a series of traffic and drink-driving indiscretions, including in 2003 when he ran down and killed 10-year-old Jess Meehan as she rode her bike across Marmion Avenue, Clarkson.
"Buddhist monk bashed to death in carpark " A 48-YEAR-OLD Buddhist monk who was savagely attacked in a public car park in Perth's south has died. Buu Lieu, also known as Paul, was found with serious injuries, lying near his blue Kia station wagon in Bibra Lake Regional Park on Sunday January 10, PerthNow reports. He died in Charles Gardiner Hospital last night. Police are calling for witnesses to come forward to help piece together what happened to Mr Lieu in the early hours of Sunday. They have not revealed a motive for the attack. Mr Lieu was living with his mother and sister after moving to Perth from Vietnam as a child. He was last seen by his family at midnight and was found at 5am by his vehicle.

One of the Councils first goals is to contribute to the public debate about the introduction of amendments to the Crimes (Criminal Organisations Control) Act. These amendments include the provision to disrupt and restrict the activities of declared organisations. These laws proposed and introduced by governments across Australia threaten the civil liberties of all Australians. In NSW, police have been granted sweeping new powers to use against any citizen without the checks and balances needed in a healthy democracy. Freedom of association is your right.
