As the 2010 NFL season begins, this Jubilee Project Spotlight features Tennessee Titan Safety Myron Rolle. Myron was never a typical athlete. He would spend the time between practices reading books and talking to professors. He stayed up late at night studying for the next biology exam while watching game films to prepare for the next game. He was forced to juggle his many passions, but that's what he did best. Because of his hard work and persistence, his story is unique: he is a Rhodes Scholar and now an NFL player, being only the third player in NFL history to accomplish this feat. But that's not why we're featuring him. It's what he plans to do with this excellent opportunity that makes him shine in this Jubilee Project Spotlight. After college, he started the Myron Rolle Foundation, dedicated to the support of health, wellness, educational and other charitable initiatives throughout the world that benefit children and families in need. Through this foundation, he has directed the Myron Rolle Wellness and Leadership Academy and the My Way to Health Program. After the NFL, Myron plans to go to Medical School to become a neurosurgeon. He is currently building the Myron Rolle Medical Clinic, which will provide much-needed health services to residents of Exuma, Bahamas as well as state-of-the-art wellness and training facilities for athletes and visitors. It is clear that Myron is a gifted man. But what makes him stand apart from the rest is his tenacity and courage to ...

Google Tech Talk July 12, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Christine Sherry. Anyone who has tried to give away money faces the question of how to evaluate a request for proposal for funds. How do you know that the group or the idea is one that you should support? This tech talk is designed for Googlers who want to be more effective and strategic in reviewing grant proposals for funding. It is designed for two groups of people: (1) those who want to know more about what to look for as they make choices in their personal philanthropy and (2) Googlers who want to submit a good grant proposal to the Google Corporate Giving Council for funding. Whatever your interest, this tech talk will guide you through what to look for in grant proposals. We will review the elements of a good proposal, criteria you can use to evaluate the proposal and the idea behind it, and what kinds of red flags that suggest you should not fund. We will also have some hands-on practice sessions to sharpen your skills in reviewing proposals. Whether you are entirely new to this process or more experienced in philanthropy, this practical session taught by a leading local expert will demystify the process of grant review and help you make smarter choices with philanthropic dollars. Christine Sherry leads her own philanthropic advising practice (www.sherryconsulting.com) and has spent the last decade teaching adults how to be more effective and strategic in philanthropy. In Dorothy Speidels family, a college education was highly valued. Therefore, when she decided to return to work after raising a family, she was determined to work in higher education. She was living in Boston at the time and enjoyed working for four years at MIT as an administrative officer. However, when she moved back to her home town of Evanston she decided that her goal was to work in development at Northwestern University. After two years with the Annual Fund at De Paul University, in 1983, she applied for a position in planned giving at Northwestern and had a most rewarding eighteen years there. While she was at Northwestern as the Deputy Director of Planned and Major Gifts, the university mounted a major campus-wide campaign. Dorothy found it a real pleasure to help alumni make gifts for a variety of designations such as endowed scholarships and professorships, athletics, the libraries, programs, and buildings. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Dorothy served as president of the Chicago Council on Planned Giving for three years and served on the board of the National Council on Planned Giving, also for three years. In 1993, Dorothy was asked to serve on the board of The Hadley School for the Blind in Winnetka, Illinois. As a Hadley board member she was able to share her development experience and introduce Charitable Gift Annuities to both the staff and the board. She served on the Hadley board for fifteen years. While Cameron Cohen, an 11-year-old boy, was stuck at home with a hip-to-toe brace, unable to play ball and run around like boys his age, Cameron decided to spend his time learning computer programming and mastered the language of iPhone applications. Cameron used his new-found skills to design iSketch, an iPhone drawing software application that was later approved by Apple for online purchase. Last March, Cameron spent 10 days at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital (SMUCLA) after undergoing surgery for a benign bone tumor. I had great care in the hospital, Cameron says, but realized that other kids in the hospital need things to help make them feel better, too. With that in mind and a generous heart, Cameron decided to donate a portion of his iSketch earnings to SMUCLA to help purchase electronic and entertainment items for other pre-teens and teens to enjoy during their hospitalization. I know Cameron was so pleased with care from his orthopaedic surgeon, Jeffrey Eckardt, MD, and I was glad he decided to help other kids, says his mother Lisa, who volunteers with Mattel Childrens Hospital UCLAs Todays and Tomorrows Children Fund, which helps support research by faculty in the Department of Pediatrics. Smithsonian director Rick Potts defends accepting money from climate change denier David Koch. TRANSCRIPT: David Koch is a philanthropist, who is deeply interested in science. He's funded the dinosaur halls, for example, in the American Museum of Natural History. He gave a lot of money to the Lincoln Center and its refurbishing. He has a lot of interest in human evolution that goes back to about thirty or forty years. And so, uh, as is true with all Smithsonian policy, our donors have no control over the content of our science or scholarship of our exhibits. And the same is true in this case. We feel very grateful for David Koch's contributions to helping, I hope, the American public and us being able to bring science to them. Q: Don't you think you're greenwashing his record by accepting his money? A: No, we find no contradiction in what we've done. Thank you.
United Nations, New York, 22 February 2010 - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed a special event today (22 February) where he called on the philanthropic community to do more to target women with its aid programmes. In his speech to the event Engaging Philanthropy to Promote Gender Equality and Womens Empowerment he told the audience that its engagement is already helping to transform the lives of women and societies, but full empowerment requires more progress in two key areas: expanding economic opportunity and ending violence against women. Ban noted that violence against women undermines development, generates instability, and sets back peace and stressed that there should be no tolerance for the use of rape as a weapon of war; no excuses for domestic violence and no looking the other way when it comes to sex trafficking, so-called honor crimes or female genital mutilation. The special event, which takes place on International Corporate Philanthropy Day in the United States, aims to raise awareness among the philanthropic community on the progress made and the challenges faced in the achievement of Millennium Development Goal 3 to promote gender equality and empower women. The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, who has long supported charities that serve women and children, went off script and told the audience that we must uphold the Millennium Development Goals; we must do it now; I am the voice of women and mothers in the world and I will carry on talking about ...
