Philharmonic Prospect Park has no followers yet. Be the first one to follow.
Mark O'Connor's Double Concerto for violin, cello and symphony orchestra. Brooklyn Philharmonic at Prospect Park, New York City, 2008. The first movement is a kind of deconstructed jig, in which O'Connor and Beiser swap notes of a single melody back and forth while the orchestra creates a wash of rhythmically shifting sound -- it's a dance movement that is never allowed to settle into a comfortable groove. The slow second movement lets the interplay between the soloists open up, the orchestra's contributions are more integral and the movement builds to a gently forceful unity that eases into silence. The finale is powered by a locomotive-like duet between the soloists, capped off by a stunning dual cadenza. Individual voices rise up, make themselves heard, then settle back in among the myriad other voices of the orchestra. That's what we mean by "the way America works." O'Connor's concerto is about bringing distinct voices together -- in this case, violin, cello and orchestra -- into a diverse and rambunctious collective to achieve a common purpose. What unites "For the Heroes" isn't an enforced conformity -- it's a recognition of each individual using his or her talent to help everyone reach a goal. It's also one amazingly virtuosic piece of music that O'Connor and Beiser -- one of the most physically active cellists we've seen -- tore into with great joy. By JAMES D. WATTS JR. Mark O'Connor performs an encore after his concerto with the Brooklyn Philharmonic at Prospect Park, NYC in 2008. The first portion of the encore is improvised, and then last portion is his arrangement of Devils Dream.
