La Pietà (1499) is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture by the renowned artist Michelangelo Buonarroti, housed in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. It is the first of a number of works of the same theme by the artist. The statue was commissioned for the French cardinal Jean de Billheres, who was a representative in Rome. The statue was made for the cardinal's funeral monument, but was moved to its current location, the first chapel on the right as one enters the basilica, in the 18th century. This famous work of art depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. The theme is of Northern origin, popular by that time in France but not yet in Italy. Michelangelo's interpretation of the Pietà is unique to the precedents. It is an important work as it balances the Renaissance ideals of classical beauty with naturalism. The statue is one of the most highly finished works by Michelangelo.

Thirteenth of *selected* excerpts from the English National Opera's production of Georg Friedrich Händel's 'Julius Caesar' ('Giulio Cesare in Egitto') . This version uses an excellent English translation by Brian Trowell of the libretto from the Italian original by Nicola Haym. Productions such as this one make a strong case for viable - nay, enjoyable and intelligible - English-language versions of non-English language operas. Dame Janet Baker leads an excellent cast in performing this Baroque masterpiece, and holds forth marvellously, dispensing with aplomb ornamentations galore - besides creating a more three-dimensional Cesare. In this excerpt, Caesar has just survived the destruction of his ship and swims ashore at the port of Alexandria. He then asks the gods for help: 'Zephyrs! Zephyrs, come to mine aid!' ('Aure, deh, per pietà '). Julius Caesar . . . Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) Concert Aria for Soprano and Orchestra "Per pietà , bell'idol mio" in C major, KV 78 ·Andante con moto Soprano: Lucia Popp Leopold Hager / Mozarteum-Orchester Salzburg Orchestation: · 2 Oboes · 2 Cornos (C) · [2 Bassoons (optional)] · Strings Pietro Metastasio's libretti are today associated almost exclusively with Baroque and early Classical settings, but they retained some of their popularity even into the early Romantic period, with both Rossini and Bellini utilizing them. This is one of the most operatic of Bellini's songs, with more than a few devices much more frequently found in arias than in his songs. The piece opens with a hurried piano introduction that immediately sets a theatrical mood, with dramatic chords. The vocal melody is first taken at a quick pace and is generally simple, though it ends with a few rather theatrical reprises with dramatic changes of dynamics and tempo. The da capo repetition ends with overtly operatic touches from both voice and accompaniment, including the traditional operatic thundering flourish of an ending from the piano. ~ Anne Feeney, All Music Guide. Composed in 1666, in The Hague. Translation to English: For pity's sake, my ...

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (March 6, 1475 February 18, 1564), commonly known as Michelangelo, was an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and engineer. Despite making few forays beyond the arts, his versatility in the disciplines he took up was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man, along with his rival and fellow Italian Leonardo da Vinci. Michelangelo's output in every field during his long life was prodigious; when the sheer volume of correspondence, sketches, and reminiscences that survive is also taken into account, he is the best-documented artist of the 16th century. Two of his best-known works, the PietĂ and David, were sculpted before he turned thirty. Despite his low opinion of painting, Michelangelo also created two of the most influential works in fresco in the history of Western art: the scenes from Genesis on the ceiling and The Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. As an architect, Michelangelo pioneered the Mannerist style at the Laurentian Library. At 74 he succeeded Antonio da Sangallo the Younger as the architect of Saint Peter's Basilica. Michelangelo transformed the plan, the western end being finished to Michelangelo's design, the dome being completed after his death with some modification. In a demonstration of Michelangelo's unique standing, he was the first Western artist whose biography was published while he was ...

Italian composer and organist, blind from an early age, He was organist at S. Lorenzo in Florence between 1369 and 1396, and in 1379 was paid 9 solidi for writing five motets--an extremely rare record of payment to a composer. Landini was the most celebrated musical personality of the trecento; his 155-odd extant works are nearly all ballate, in which he excelled. In these smoothness of sound rather than dissonant asperity is evident; Landini's technical prowess can be seen in the canonic madrigal De! dimmi tu. He was a brilliant player of several instruments, especially the portative organ, and at the same time a distinguished poet, writing some of the texts he set and being awarded poetic honours in Venice. His music not only represents about a quarter of all the Italian trecento music known to have survived, but is preserved in many diverse sources, from Florence and elsewhere.
