Jeff Mason, Master Herbalist introduces the viewer to a few poisonous plants.
Out in the field, FeralKevin quickly goes over a very important plant to know: poison hemlock. It's a wild plant that is deadly poisonous and has edible lookalikes. I insist that beginners and even experts avoid even the lookalikes, as none of them, besides fennel and yampah, are worth any potential risk (in my opinion). After all, we're talking about something that could kill you!
Conium Maculatum. Has musty ill-smelling odor. NOT ALL POISON HEMLOCK HAS PURPLE BLOTCHES OR STREAKS. Hairless. Can grow to 10 feet tall. Flowers are white umbrella shaped clusters. Looks just like Parsley. All parts of the plant are poisonous including the taproot. Leaves are shiny green. Poison Hemlock was classified as an official drug in the United States Pharmacopoeia from 1890 to1920. The famous philosopher Socrates was sentenced to death by poisoning, ingesting the fresh juice of the Poison Hemlock. Widespread throughout United States.

This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from voaspecialenglish.com Just because a plant looks nice does not mean you should eat it. Farmers learn this lesson tragically sometimes when their animals feed on wild plants. In fact, some of the nicest looking plants in the world are the most harmful. They are best enjoyed from a dstance. A good example is belladonna. A "bella donna" is a beautiful woman in Italian. The plant is also beautiful. It has flowers like stars. It also has shiny berries that start out green and turn purple to black. But every part of the belladonna plant is poisonous. Other names for belladonna include devil's herb and deadly nightshade. Yet just because something is dangerous does not always mean it is all bad. Belladonna and other poisonous plants have a long history of medical use. The common or purple foxglove produces pretty flowers along a tall leafy stem called a spike. Foxglove can cause heart failure. Yet the plant is part of a group called Digitalis that is used in medicine to treat people with heart problems. Several other plants present risks to people or animals. Their names include coast fiddleneck, common cocklebur, low larkspur and common groundsel. Recently there was news from northern Germany. Reports said a shopper at a market found small amounts of groundsel in bags of mixed salad. The average person would probably not have recognized it. But this person knew about poisonous plants. Many people happily recognize ...

I think something needs to be said about the poisonous plants, so I have decided to do a short series about toxic summer plants in the great lakes region. Some of them are useful in other ways, but be careful!! According to my research, Dogbane is useful as cordage, but dangerous if consumed. It probably won't be fatal in and of itself , but as we know, any illness in the bush can be disastrous. Thanks for watching!
