The polio crisis of the early 20th century has been largely forgotten in the US due to the effective immunization campaigns of the 1950s. Unfortunately, the wild poliovirus (WPV) still remains a real public health threat in many corners of the world with a disproportionate number of cases in India. This session of Public Health Grand Rounds focuses on current efforts to contain the remaining polio cases in India, as well as discuss measures needed to completely eradicate this public health burden globally. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is organizing an international conference titled: "Initiatives in Education, Science and Culture Towards Enhanced US- Muslim Countries Collaborations" during the period from 16 to 18 June 2010. It will bring together a diverse group of scholars, clergymen, community leaders, political figures, education experts, university students, faculty members, technology consultants, and library professionals from the US, Egypt and many other countries around the world. The conference will be structured around three main themes: Education, Culture, and Science & Technology, exploring each of them in conjunction with four cross-cutting tracks, namely, Youth, IT, Media, and Women. The uniqueness of the proposed conference lies in that it will come up with a number of specific follow up projects and activities and will focus on building a digital social networking to connect people together, particularly youth. During the conference each of the three main themes will be discussed in general Plenary Session (Davos Style Discussion) with a specialized panel of experts, reflecting on and identifying the main areas of focus for the future. Each theme with each cross-section will be analyzed in further detail in individual parallel workshops. More importantly, one of the follow-up projects will be presented and discussed in the parallel workshops. It is worth mentioning that a number of universities, educational institutions and NGOs from the US, Egypt and other ...
Rotary clubs across the continent unite as ball's 4-month journey comes to a close in Egypt Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, gave the Kick Polio Out of Africa (KPOA) campaign a boost by signing the football as it traveled from Cape Town to Egypt ahead of the 2010 World Cup. During the ball's epic journey through 22 polio-affected and high-risk countries, Rotary clubs throughout Africa mobilized the public for massive immunizations and raising awareness for polio eradication. Gates lauded Rotary's efforts to help kick polio out the continent -- and eventually out of the world. Since Rotary and its partners began their fight against polio in 1988, the incidence of the disease has been reduced by 99 percent. In Africa, only Nigeria remains polio-endemic, but the disease still affects children in many other high-risk countries, emphasizing the importance of protecting all African children from polio. According to the World Health Organization, only three cases of polio were reported in Nigeria through 25 May this year, compared with 276 cases reported during the same time period in 2009. On 23 February, Rotary launched its "Kick Polio out of Africa" awareness campaign in Cape Town, one of the host cities to the 2010 World Cup, with the symbolic kicking of a ball signed by Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Afflicted with polio as a child, Tutu joined the campaign as goodwill ambassador. From Egypt, the ball will travel to Montr‚al, Canada, to be ...

The lighting conditions for the camera were very poor (David preferred the conference room lights turned right down so as to emphasize his slide presentation). Transcript: On behalf of the American people including Muslim communities in all fifty states I want to extend best wishes to Muslims in America and around the world. Ramadan Kareem. Ramadan is the month in which Muslims believe the Koran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, beginning with a simple word iqra. It is therefore a time when Muslims reflect upon the wisdom and guidance that comes with faith, and the responsibility that human beings have to one another, and to God. Like many people of different faiths who have known Ramadan through our communities and families, I know this to be a festive time a time when families gather, friends host iftars, and meals are shared. But I also know that Ramadan is a time of intense devotion and reflection a time when Muslims fast during the day and perform tarawih prayers at night, reciting and listening to the entire Koran over the course of the month. These rituals remind us of the principles that we hold in common, and Islams role in advancing justice, progress, tolerance, and the dignity of all human beings. For instance, fasting is a concept shared by many faiths including my own Christian faith as a way to bring people closer to God, and to those among us who cannot take their next meal for granted. And the support that Muslims provide to others recalls our responsibility to advance opportunity and prosperity for people everywhere. For all of us must remember that the world we want to build and the changes that we want to ...

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, let me, on behalf of the American people and my administration, welcome President Mubarak for his first visit since I've taken office. I want to publicly thank him for the extraordinary hospitality that he showed us when I traveled to Egypt and delivered my speech at Cairo University. It was an extraordinary visit, not only because of the great welcome that I received from the President and the college students who were in attendance, but also having an opportunity to visit the pyramids was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. The United States and Egypt have worked together closely for many years, and for many of those years President Mubarak has been a leader and a counselor and a friend to the United States. We obviously have a lot of great challenges that have to be dealt with and we are continuing to work together to find those areas where we can find common ground and to work in concert to bring peace and security to the region. The Arab-Israeli situation is something that has been of ongoing interest and we had an extensive conversation about how we could help to jumpstart an effective process on all sides to move away from a status quo that is not working for the Israeli people, the Palestinian people, or, I think, the region as a whole. We discussed our common concerns about the potential proliferation of nuclear weapons in the region, including the development of nuclear weapons by Iran, and how we could work together on those fronts ...
THE PRESIDENT: Thank you. Thank you. Hello, Grand Junction! (Applause.) Thank you so much. Thank you. Everybody please have a seat. It is good to be back in Southwest Colorado. (Applause.) Last time I was here I had some really good peaches. (Laughter.) Somehow, though, Michelle and the girls got to go pick peaches -- and I'm hoping they bring some back for me. It is nice to take a break from the back and forth in Washington. I want to especially want to thank Nathan for his introduction and sharing his story. (Applause.) It's not easy to talk about an illness in the family. It's not easy to talk about such a painful experience. Because it's important that we understand what's at stake in this health care debate he's been willing to share it with us. And so I'm very grateful to him. We've got a couple of other special guests that I want to acknowledge. First of all, I stole him from you to make him what I believe will be the best Secretary of the Interior in the history of the United States, Ken Salazar. (Applause.) But I left things in good hands with the outstanding congressman and brother of Ken, John Salazar. (Applause.) Your outstanding governor of this great state, Bill Ritter, is here. (Applause.) As well as the extraordinary First Lady of the state, Jeannie Ritter is here as well. (Applause.) Two of the finest young senators that we've got in Washington right now: Senator Mark Udall. (Applause.) And Senator Michael Bennet. (Applause.) I want to thank the ...

PRESIDENT OBAMA: I want to extend my welcome to the Amir of Kuwait. We are grateful for his visit. When I was traveling in the region, the Amir showed me great hospitality, so I'm glad to be able to return the gesture. Although, I have to confess that I think the meal that we're preparing is much smaller than the one he prepared for me. Kuwait and the United States enjoy very strong bilateral relations. We are looking to make those relations even stronger. Kuwait has been an outstanding host for the United States Armed Forces during its operations in Iraq. And as we transition our operations in Iraq, it's important for us to emphasize not only our gratitude to Kuwait, but also our ongoing commitment to Kuwait's security. We're also discussing important regional issues ranging from the importance of moving the Arab-Israeli peace process forward, to the situation in Afghanistan, our joint counterterrorism efforts, and our need to emphasize Iran meeting its international obligations. And I'm confident that, based on this conversation and ongoing work between our two countries, that we can strengthen not only Kuwaiti-US relationships, but also to create a more stable region of peace and security in the region. HIS HIGHNESS SHEIKH SABAH: (As translated.) Thank you very much, Mr. President, His Excellency, for this kind welcome. And I would like to affirm to the American people that Kuwait shall remain a partner of the United States. Kuwait shall remain an ally and a partner of ...

Over the last two decades, a Global Polio Eradication Initiative has cut the number of polio cases worldwide from 350000 per year in 1988 to about one thousand in 2004. The goal is to certify all regions of the world polio-free by the end of 2008. The success of the polio campaign depends on delivering vaccines to children living in these hard-to-reach areas. In the vast and dry lands of Niger, reaching children in the migration corridors used by nomads poses major logistical challenges. Credits: Producer:Theirry Delvigne-Jean
