Moving water will not freeze and any ice sheets will remain very thin with warm air from inside of the house bubbling up and hitting it. Only northern species of fish (blue gill, gold fish, cray fish and the list goes on -- please search Google, YouTube, Wikipedia and many other sources for tons of instant information) can survive extreme cold like this, which is why only out Gold Fish have remained outside. All of our tropical fish -- such as sword tails, guppies, platties, red tail sharks, albino cory cats, silver dollar fish (and the list goes on) get to come inside the house for the winter where they can be kept warm. We were at Iraion, Samos, Greece to observe the chameleons when we fell on this beautiful spot. Little did we know that a few months later, a bulldozer would wipe all the wondefully complex little ecosystem to nothing.
Leaves, pollen and other algae nutrients get into the pond water via the surface. Oase skimmers powerfully and effectively extract these dirt particles from the surface, collecting them in the basketr. That way dirt can be removed from the pond ecosystem before it starts to pollute it.
