On March 18, 1970, Local 36 of New York City's National Association of Letter Carriers began a wildcat strike protesting low pay and poor job advancement. Postal workers in more than 30 cities joined the strike, crippling businesses nationwide. President Richard Nixon tried using the National Guard to process mail in New York City before negotiating with workers to end the strike almost two weeks after it began. Vincent R. Sombrotto (president emeritus of the National Association of Letter Carriers and member of Local 36), William Burrus (president of the American Postal Workers Union), and George Gould (former Staff Director of the Subcommittee on Postal Operations and Services) discuss these momentous events and the dramatic changes the strike sparked in the nation's mail service and its employees' lives.

THE STRIKE THAT STUNNED THE COUNTRY - So invisible were the docile, dependable men in gray until last week that no one noticed that their passions were about to explode into a historic and ominous strike. The first national postal stoppage in US history and the largest walkout ever against the Federal Government, the postal strike almost immediately began to strangle the operations of commerce, impair Government functions and vastly inconvenience the public.

An interview with a Royal Mail worker, about the recent postal strikes
A second round of strikes began this morning after three days of talks at the TUC failed to produce a deal
Harry takes a little jibe at the postal strikes of October and November 2009!
The postal strikes have been called off until at least the New Year to allow for fresh talks between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union. The BBC reports that TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said the decision had been made to provide "a period of calm" in which the two sides could reach a long-term deal. The industrial dispute has been over the level of job losses the Royal Mail says are necessary as part of its modernisation plans. While the CWU accepts that some redundancies are required, the two sides disagree over their extent. CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward said the decision to end the strike action had been unanimously agreed by its executive board, yet he added that the union recognised the forthcoming negotiations would be difficult, saying the dispute had been "bitter". Until the latest announcements, CWU members had held five 24-hour strikes over the past two weeks, which involved members in different roles striking on different days.

Just a reminder about how the UK government is meddling behind the scenes in the postal dispute. Gorgon Brown and co are PURPOSELY trying to destroy the UK postal service, selling off the profitable bits and letting the rest collapse. When people decide they will send e-mails instead of a letter they will find their mail being scanned for possible 'terrorist activity', or possible political dissent. Uk citizens MUST UNITE behind OUR postal workers, as it may be YOU who are targetted next....
