137th Preakness Stakes: I'll Have Another chases down Bodemeister to win ...Washington PostBALTIMORE — In a reprise of the Kentucky Derby's thrilling finish, I'll Have Another ran down the favored Bodemeister in the final furlong Saturday to win the 137th Preakness Stakes by a neck and keep alive his pursuit of horse racing's Triple Crown.

I'll Have Another did just that, winning another Triple Crown race with even more flash and dash than he did in the Kentucky Derby. By bolting past Bodemeister -- again -- this time in Saturday's Preakness, all that stands in the way of racing glory is the Belmont Stakes in three weeks. Win that and the smooth-striding 3-year-old will find himself in the company of Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed, the last to win thoroughbred racing's most coveted prize in 1978. That's heady company for a colt who has yet to be favored in any of his seven races. That should change in the Belmont. "We're thinking Triple Crown, baby," elated winning trainer Doug O'Neill said. "He's a special horse. We'll see how he comes out of it, and if he comes out of it in good shape, we're heading to New York, baby." I'll Have Another won by 1 1/2 lengths in the Derby and by a neck in the Preakness -- the same margins Affirmed posted in wins over rival Alydar in those two races 34 years ago. But there's one big storyline difference this time: Bodemeister is skipping the Belmont. "He's getting off the bus here," trainer Bob Baffert said.

It was an exciting race at the Preakness Stakes. The race came down to the very end, with I'll Have Another challenging Bodemeister to win the race. It looked like Bodemeister was going to win, but I'll Have Another managed to edge ahead at the end of the race The horse, with jockey Mario Gutierrez, went from 15-to-1 shot to Kentucky Derby winner two weeks ago. Now the three-year-old colt is the only competitor in the field with a chance to capture the sport's elusive Triple Crown. I'll Have Another became the first horse since 2008 to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown, edging Bodemeister again in a thrilling finish to the 137th running of the Preakness Stakes Saturday at sun-splashed Pimlico Race Course. O'Neill said prior to the race that what worked at 1¼ miles in a 20-horse field at Churchill Downs won't necessarily fly in the 13/16-mile middle leg of the Triple Crown, since Pimlico is known for its tight turns and speed-favoring surface. And it turned out to be a differeent race completely. O'Neill vowed to change instructions for 25-year-old upstart jockey Mario Gutierrez before the 11 starters go to the gate. "We'll be involved early," he said earlier this week. Bodemeister was the 3-2 favorite over the Derby winner, who entered the race at 3-1. But he competed for the sixth time this season and third time in five weeks. Tom Chukas, president of the Maryland Jockey Club, said he was happy with the race-day turnout, especially in the packed infield, and ...

The 137th Preakness Stakes is set to take place this weekend at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md. The one and a half mile race is the second jewel of the Triple Crown, coming each year after the Kentucky Derby and before the Belmont Stakes. The competition was named after an American Thoroughbred called ... Preakness, and was first held in 1873. As the horses are called to the post at Preakness, the audience sings "Maryland, My Maryland," the official state song. Last year's winner, Shackleford, won't be running this time, but this year's Kentucky Derby winner, I'll Have Another, will hope to have another. The competition will be thick though, with a stable of challengers that includes Went the Day Well, Zetterholm, Teeth of the Dog, Tiger Walk, and Daddy Nose Best. Of course, not all creatures who run at Pimlico are as elegant as the thoroughbreds.

Sagamore Farm's Tiger Walk was shipped from Kevin Plank's nearby farm in Glyndon, Md. to Pimlico Race Course Sunday morning for a half-mile workout in preparation for Saturday's Preakness Stakes. The son of Tale of the Cat breezed four furlongs in 47.60 seconds under Horacio Karamanos. "He was awesome. It was a little bit faster than I wanted, but it was still good," trainer Ignacio Correas said. Tiger Walk was equipped with "cheater" blinkers for the work and will wear them for the first time in the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown. Correas is hoping the blinkers will improve his colt's focus. "Especially on the turns, he's been losing ground. It's like coming into the turn he's three lengths behind the pace and coming home, it's like seven or eight lengths, and then he's closing ground," Correas said. "So we're trying to avoid that and hopefully we'll accomplish that." Tiger Walk has raced exclusively in graded stakes this year, all at Aqueduct, finishing third in the Withers (G3) before checking in fourth in both the Gotham (G3) and Wood Memorial (G1). "Even though he's been competitive, he still needs to step up," Correas said. "It's a tough race, but you cannot win unless you're in. So, we're going to try our best and he's going to try his best too." Kent Desormeaux will ride Tiger Walk for the first time Saturday. Video shot and produced by WBAL's Scott Wykoff (May 13, 2012)
On a sunny Saturday morning at Pimlico Race Course, trainer Doug O'Neill was very enthusiastic about Kentucky Derby winner I'll Have Another's chances of winning the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown. "I'm just very pumped the way our colt is settling in and training," O'Neill said. "I really look for him to repeat in the Preakness." Under exercise rider Jonny Garcia, Reddam Racing's Derby winner turned in an enthusiastic gallop when the track reopened at 8:30 am following the renovation break. I'll Have Another skipped over the Pimlico surface for the third morning since he resumed galloping. "He had great energy today and his normal long, beautiful stride," O'Neill said. "We're very happy with the way things are going." After the gallop, O'Neill and his staff schooled I'll Have Another in Pimlico's indoor paddock. O'Neill said he liked the way the colt acted in that space and will take him there before the Preakness. Video shot and produced by WBAL's Scott Wykoff (May 12, 2012)

O'Neill took a red-eye flight from California to watch I'll Have Another on the track at Pimlico Race Course Thursday morning and, in a matter of minutes, his Preakness-bound colt made the overnight trip worthwhile. With trainer Doug O'Neill arriving minutes before his horse left Stakes Barn D on Thursday morning, I'll Have Another was led to the track by Lava Man -- a $5 million earner during his career, who is a stable pony in retirement -- and galloped smartly once around the track under exercise rider Jonny Garcia. It was the first time the Flower Alley colt was allowed to gallop since he won the Kentucky Derby early Saturday evening at Churchill Downs. If you had your own breed or horse what would you name it?
Silver Charm, who won the Kentucky Derby over Captain Bodgit by the length of his gray head, provided a smashing encore today when he won the 122d Preakness by the same head over Free House, with Captain Bodgit third by another head in a three-horse blanket finish. And he set the stage for the Belmont Stakes in three weeks, when he will be racing to become the first colt in 19 years to sweep the Triple Crown. The three rivals re-enacted their photo-finish performances of two weeks ago before 88594 spectators at Pimlico Race Course with a slight reshuffling of the order behind Silver Charm -- but with the same tingling drive to the wire -- in the closest Preakness in 65 years. The top three once more delivered a formful race, outrunning the leading outsider, Touch Gold, who did not appear in the Derby and who stumbled badly at the start of the Preakness. He closed to finish fourth, within 1 1/4 lengths of the three front-runners flying at the head of the field of 10. 'And we're going for the Triple Crown,'' shouted Bob Lewis, the California beer distributor who owns Silver Charm with his wife, Beverly. ''We need this badly in thoroughbred racing. May the best horse win at Belmont Park.'' Silver Charm is the first horse to have a chance at the Triple Crown in the Belmont since 1989, when Sunday Silence lost the Belmont to Easy Goer, whom he had outrun in the Derby and the Preakness. Bob Baffert, the white-haired, blithe spirit of racing who trains Silver Charm, has waited ...

Well here is a proper tribute to Barbaro. I thought I might as well make a new tribute, he was a great horse that will never be forgotten. More about Barbaro: Barbaro (April 29, 2003 -- January 29, 2007) was an American thoroughbred who decisively won the 2006 Kentucky Derby, but shattered his leg two weeks later in the 2006 Preakness Stakes, ending his racing career and eventually leading to his death. On May 20, 2006, Barbaro ran in the Preakness Stakes as a heavy favorite, but, after he false-started, he fractured three bones in and around the fetlock of his right hind leg. The injury ruined any chance of a Triple Crown in 2006 and ended his racing career. The next day, he underwent surgery at the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania for his injuries. In July he developed laminitis in his left rear leg. He underwent five further operations, and his prognosis varied during an exceptionally long stay in the Equine Intensive Care Unit at the New Bolton Center. While his right hind leg eventually healed, a final risky procedure on it proved futile because the colt soon developed further laminitis in both front legs. His veterinarians and owners concluded that he could not be saved, and Barbaro was euthanized on January 29, 2007. He was a third-generation descendant of Mr. Prospector, and as such Barbaro was related to many Triple Crown hopefuls of his time including Big Brown, Afleet Alex, Smarty Jones, Funny Cide and Fusaichi Pegasus.
