"Cause I really don't care what condition it gets to the precinct." Street vendors working at 450 Clarkson Ave. in Brooklyn, New York, have been subject to weeks of police harassment, intimidation, unlawful arrest and confiscation of their good and carts, simply for trying to sell food on an unrestricted sidewalk to hundreds of loyal customers and fellow community members. In this video, shot by a street vendor on October 1st, 2009, we see a food vendor cart, owned by vendor Hamdy Akl, being hauled away to the police station. The fact the there is no law restricting vending on this sidewalk, and that just seizing property ignores due process, does not deter our police force from "teaching vendors a lesson" after being told arbitrarily that they cannot work there. This is followed by a towing fiasco (at 4:52) which, despite Hamdy's warnings, rams the cart against the curb, damaging it severley. Like the Seargeant says (at 0:22), the NYPD really "doesn't care" about vendor's property, or about the fact that they need carts like these to provide for their families. A small symptom of a much broader lack of respect and consideration for hard-working people in New York City. On the contrary, instead of the respect they deserve, venors get criminalized and intimidated. This however, is not how the story ends.
