Aparna Sen was born on 25 October 1945,in Calcutta to a Bengali family, originally from EAST BENGAL(now Bangladesh). Her father is the veteran critic and film-maker Chidananda Dasgupta. Her mother Supriya Dasgupta is the cousin of renowned Bengali poet Jibanananda Das. She spent her childhood in Hazaribagh and Kolkata and had her schooling initially in South Point and later mostly in Modern High School for Girls, Kolkata. She studied her BA English honors in Presidency College.. She met the Magnum photographer, Brian Brake, in Kolkata in 1961 when he was visiting India to photograph his Monsoon series. Brake used Sen as the model for what was to become one of his most well known photographs - a shot of a girl holding her face to the first drops of monsoon rain. The photo shoot was set up on a Kolkata rooftop with a ladder and a watering can. Sen described the shoot: He took me up to the terrace, had me wear a red sari in the way a village girl does, and asked me to wear a green stud in my nose. To be helpful, I said let me wear a red one to match, and he said no - he was so decisive, rather brusque - I think a green one. It was stuck to my nose with glue, because my nose wasn't pierced. Someone had a large watering can, and they poured water over me. It was really a very simple affair. It took maybe half an hour. Aparna Sen (née Dasgupta) is a critically acclaimed Indian filmmaker, script writer, and actress. She is the winner of three National Film Awards and eight ...

This is one of the ancient, yet one-of-a-kind puja in kolkata. When you have seen college square and trying to get to Md Ali Park (or vice-versa), you have to pass through a lane beside Presidency. In that lane, in a simple pandal, this Puja is held. Instead of traditional good vs evil, this is Lord Ram's "okal-bodhon" of Goddess Durga.

The most famous Coffee House branch in Kolkata is the one at the College Street, also known as the "Coffee House at College Street". It is situated opposite the Presidency College, Kolkata and has been for a long time a regular hang out for students (and ex-students) of the Presidency College, University of Calcutta, and other institutions in College Street. The history of the Coffee House at College Street can be traced to Albert Hall, which was founded in April 1876. Later, the Coffee Board decided to start a coffee joint from the Albert Hall in 1942. Notable citizens, including Rabindranath Tagore and Subhas Chandra Bose, were frequent visitors to the place. In 1947, the Central Government changed the name of the place to "Coffee House". The place became a meeting place for the poets, artistes, literati and people from the world of art and culture.

The song - "Prison Trilogy', originally sung by Joan Baez. Here, sung by Jayanta Ray with its Bengali rendition composed and Rajarshi Dasgupta's "Jatugriher Paakhi" (1990-91). Jatugriher Pakhi was a band led by Rajarshi, with Pritam Chakraborty , Seema Singh and others for company - exclusively Presidencian. The occasion here is the Presidency College Alumni Steamer Party 2010 dated 17th January, aboard a steamer, cruising on the Ganga (Hoogley), off the Calcutta/Kolkata riverfront.
"Jamaica Farewell", originally by Harry Belafonte, being sung by Jayanta Ray, along with its Bengali version. The venue is Calcutta/Kolkata(India), aboard a steamer cruising on the Ganges (hoogly) river. The occasion is Presidency College Alumni Steamer Party. The date is 17th January 2010, a bitterly cold and windy day, surprisingly alien to Kolkata. The incentive - lots and lots of Old Mong rum that made me nostalgic about good old Jamaica - hic hic! Cheers and enjoy!
