Together with Rita O'Dwyer of SBS Radio Australia, Joseph Brincat and his brother Emanuel gave us a tour of his grandfather's old bakery shop in Naxxar. It is located within the 18th century housing area in the historic village. Joseph's grandparents operated the bakery shop for several decades. The bakery was passed down to his uncle Emanuel. It ceased operation in 1982. The old time Maltese Bakery was an establishment found in all towns and villages. These bakeries, apart from baking bread and pastries, were also used by the local communities. Before the time of gas, electricity and household ovens, housewives used to take their Sunday Roast and baked meals to be cooked at these bakeries. Early each Sunday morning and Festa days, women and young ladies carried pots and baking dishes to the local bakery. By midday they returned to the bakeries to collect their cooked meals. Later, Joseph showed us the old Village Prison which is situated right behind the bakery. The Village Prison on Triq Il-Ħabs (Prison Road): The prison and Law Courts have nothing to do with one another, the former proceeding the latter by over a century. A prison in a village outside the walled cities was unique in the 18th century. It probably housed those who failed to pay their debts. It actually had a number of houses and not prison cells. This is the prison where prisoners were held during Khmer rouge era Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge believed that cities were living and breathing tools of capitalism in their own right - Phnom Penh referred toas "the great prostitute of the Mekong." In order to create the ideal communist society, all people would have to live and work in the countryside as peasants. Peasants, in fact, were the Khmer Rouge communist ideal, not unlike the blonde-haired, blue-eyed Aryan of Nazi Germany. Peasants were seen as simple, uneducated, hard-working and not prone to exploiting others. Their way of life had not changed for centuries, yet they always managed to survive. It was this perception that caused the Khmer Rouge to view peasants - old people, to use their political jargon - as the ideal communists for the new Cambodian state. The city dwellers of Phnom Penh and other Cambodian cities were seen as new people (or "April 17 people"). New people were the root of all capitalist evil in the eyes of the Khmer Rouge. It didn't matter if you were a teacher, a tailor, a civil servant or a monk: new people were the embodiment of capitalism and the enemy of communism, their personal political ideologies irrelevant. The Khmer Rouge felt that new people had made an active choice to live in the cities and thus declared their allegiance to capitalism. All city dwellers became enemies of the new communist state, a status that would cost hundreds of thousands of them their lives.

US Congressman Bruce Braley on Monday said after a tour of the facility with Federal Bureau of Prisons and Department of Defense officials that the prison located about 12 miles north of Clinton on the Illinois side is a strong contender. They're looking at a number of different facilities but right now this one is at the top of the list because it offers them everything they're looking for, the Waterloo Democrat said. Braley said he wants to continue to talk with colleagues and constituents before he backs the measure, which has not been given a timeline. Harley Lappin, director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, was less committed. He said its still early in the process and there are a number of options being considered. However, Lappin did say Thomson had the capabilities required to meet federal standards. This is a fine, fine facility of a high security nature, he said. Officials in Hardin, Mont., Florence, Colo., and Marion, also have said they would welcome Guantanamo inmates. A rally held on August 6. 2009 by prison workers against the planned privatisation of Parklea prison by the NSW Labor government. This was the third major rally held in Sydney this year on this issue. There have been 15 other rallies in regional cities and towns as well as a 100-day-long picket outside Premier Nathan Rees' electorate office. If the sheriff has nothing to hide why does he still refuse to give out information? Why did they refuse to acknowledge that they knew of anyone doing the grand jury investigation when they were asked? When called why does the dept refuse or avoid direct questions?
