ignition.my There was a torrential downpour the evening that Ignition.my had the opportunity to test drive the recently launched Proton Satria Neo R3 Lotus Racing. Launched in conjunction with Lotus' return to Formula 1 this year, it really is a very special and very limited edition of only 25 cars. It's a brilliant car, what a performance Proton Satria Neo should be: good spread of power and strong acceleration, fun handling and strong brakes, and aggressive race-refugee styling.
Proton Satria Neo R3 Lotus Racing Edition: Driven at Proton's R&D Test Track

A Proton Satria Neo for RM115,000? That's double the normal price of the CPS version and youd wonder who would want to pay so much for one. But apparently, at least 13 people have already put their money down for it and there are only 12 units left (unless Proton decides to make more). The reason why these people have been quick to snap up the special Satria Neo is because it is not only performance-improved but also destined to be a collectors item. Its the Satria Neo R3 Lotus Racing Edition, an exclusive version developed to celebrate Proton's involvement with Lotus Racing in this years F1 championship. The 'R3 indicates that this car has been a project of Protons Motorsports Division ('R3 stands for 'Race, Rally, Research) and while past R3 editions may have been just 'look fast jobs with no change in performance, the Lotus Racing Edition is more than just looks; it had to have a level of performance which would make it worthy of sharing the Lotus racing heritage and success. The bodywork started off as a standard Satria Neo CPS and to reduce weight, the metal bonnet was replaced with one made of carbonfibre, the same material also being used for the tailgate spoiler and side skirts. Fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) fenders are also fitted a first for a production Proton model and have race-inspired side vents with the Lotus Racing name prominently emblazoned. Besides reducing overall weight by around 62 kgs, the aim of enhancing performance was also achieved by fine ...

Launched just minutes ago, the Proton Satria Neo R3 Lotus Edition is the latest variant to roll out of the carmakers tuning arm, R3. Based on the Satria Neo, the car come with the CPS engine, tweaked to produce 145hp, 20hp more than the normal CPS variant. True to Lotuss principals, the cars weight have been reduced to aid performance, FRP side panels with carbon fiber hood and other lightened parts makes the car 100kg lighter then the CPS variant also. Suspension upgrade was done with the installation of Ohlin suspension set and the front brake system have been replaced with four pot calipers and a bigger and slotted disc from AP Racing. Only 25 will be produced in conjunction with Proton's 25th anniversary. We had a sneak preview of the car at the Proton test track; so get your copy of CBT this weekend for more details.
The Proton Satria Neo CPS is the interim successor of the original, Lotus-tuned Satria GTI. It is the only proper hot hatch priced below RM100,000. It may not be perfect but it is certainly an entertaining car to drive. We can't wait for Proton's new turbocharged engines to find its way into the Satria Neo. In the meantime we will just have to enjoy the Neo CPS. Watch the video to find out if it is a credible replacement to the highly respected Satri GTI For more motoring videos from Mail Motor please visit www.youtube.com For more motoring stories from Mail Motor please visit www.mmail.com.my

MEM was originally formed in 1982 as an outlet for its owner, Chris Mellors, to compete in British Champion Rallying but soon developed into a successful preparation company winning events and more than 10 championships all over the world since it was formed in 1983. Highlights include MEM winning the British Championship twice, the FIA Production World Championship with the Proton Wira in 2002, the US Pro-Rally Championship in 2003 for Mitsubishi USA and the 2004 FIA Asia-Pacific Championship, again for Proton. Building on this successful partnership between MEM and Proton in Malaysia, MEM was authorised to transform the road going version of Protons Satria Neo model and produce a ground-breaking conversion of the Satria into the full specification Super 2000 car that you see today. This is a sporty little hatchback with a lot going for it, not least its looks and Lotus-tuned chassis which make it good fun to drive. Itâs well equipped and the 1.6 litre engine has enough go in it to please the sort of buyer it will attract As you may know, Proton bought Lotus in 2003 which gave it access to some of the worldâs finest chassis tuning engineers and the results shine through in the Satria Neo. Show it a series of twisty bends and it will put a grin on your face like few other hatchbacks. It handles very well indeed yet also rides well, firm but nicely composed over bumps. Certainly the chassis is the carâs strongest suit. As the `neoâ part of the name suggests, this is a revised version of the car and among the improvements has been a programme to make is more refined and quieter on the road. There is a choice of two engines, a 1.3 or 1.6 with the bigger one also being available with the option of an automatic gearbox. I had the 1.6 and itâs reasonably potent with 111 bhp Still and all I did like the Proton. The styling works for me and it seems for others too. At the front there is a distinctive headlamp shape which Proton refers to as `tiger eyeâ projector lamps, the alloy wheels sit under flared arches and at the back the exhaust tailpipe pokes out in the middle of the valence. Quite a few people asked me what it was and seemed surprised when I said Proton The cabin is a little bit small and I found headroom to be quite restricted but the car is well ...

Proton Satria Neo The Lotus Effect Wednesday June 13 (First written on 2007-06-13) What kind of Supermini would British sportscar makers Lotus produce, were they in the market to make that kind of car? Thanks to the Proton Satria Neo, honed to perfection by the Norfolk manufacturer, we dont have to wonder.. In case you werent already aware, Proton owns Lotus. The Malaysian companys marketing machine has been in overdrive recently, striving to make sure we all know that. The result is that for some time now, the Norfolk-based sportscar firms finest chassis engineering know-how has been brought to bear on new Proton products. The Satria Neo, however, was the first Proton to actually carry the Lotus mark about its bodywork. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value The question that fast hatchback fans have been itching to know the answer to is; does this mean the Satria Neo is a cynical marketing ploy or a thinly disguised Lotus? The answer, as tends to be the case in these situations, lies somewhere between the two extremes. Just where, in the substantial gulf that exists between budget South East Asian Hatchbacks and lightweight British trackday specials, the Satria Neo comes to rest will be crucial to its future prospects. After a couple of months and a few thousand miles at the wheel of the Neo, were well and truly primed with the answers. First youve got to manage your expectations.
