Mortality rates for pulmonary embolectomy in patients with acute massive pulmonary embolism have decreased in recent years. However, they still range from 30% to 45% when the surgery is performed on critically ill patients, and the rates reach 60% in patients who have experienced cardiac arrest before the procedure. The causes of death in these patients are generally attributed to right heart failure due to persistent pulmonary hypertension, intractable pulmonary edema, and massive parenchymal and intrabronchial hemorrhage. Clinical and experimental findings indicate that venous air embolism causes severe or even lethal damage to the pulmonary microvasculature and the lung parenchyma consequent to the release of endothelium-derived cytokines. These findings are similar to those observed when severely compromised patients undergo pulmonary embolectomy—air entrapped in the pulmonary artery during embolectomy can lead to fatal outcomes. organic embolism--air embolism Besides enabling the removal of residual thrombotic material from the peripheral branches of the pulmonary artery, retrograde pulmonary perfusion fills the pulmonary artery with blood and prevents pulmonary air embolism. In this retrospective study, we analyzed a series of 30 consecutive critically ill patients in whom we applied retrograde pulmonary perfusion while performing standard pulmonary embolectomy. No patient died or experienced major postoperative complications. We believe that the use of retrograde ...

Doc Pawsitive does some dumb shit occassionally! Smoking again kind of tops the "Dumb Shit List" and my recent run-in with a wayward blood clot that broke free and migrated to my lung, where it decided to settle in as a Pulmonary Embolism was just the sort of kick in the ass I needed to realize just HOW dumb, and quit all over again!? Hey, it could have been a lot worse, I could have picked up something else and not lived to post this video, so it's all good for today!

www.mahalo.com Tennis star Serena Williams reportedly underwent emergency surgery earlier this week, after being rushed to a Los Angeles hospital with a pulmonary embolism. According to "People Magazine," the 29-year-old Williams "underwent emergency treatment" at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Monday, February 28, 2011. A rep for Williams told "People" that her client suffered a "hematoma" - the "result of treatment for a more critical situation" - a pulmonary embolism, which is a blood clot in the lungs. The rep says that Williams is being monitored closely by her doctors "to avoid additional complications." Serena Williams has taken time off from playing tennis while dealing with an injury - she hasn't played since she won Wimbledon last year. According to Reuters, Williams has been dealing with the aftermath of a cut she sustained on her foot from "broken glass at a restaurant in Germany" in July of 2010. Reuters reports that Williams "has undergone at least two operations on her foot" since then. Williams' rep tells "People" that the blood clot was found shortly after Williams returned to California after seeing doctors in New York about her foot. This 3D medical animation depicting Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT or Deep Venous Thrombosis) begins by showing a blood clot forming in a lower leg vein. As red blood cells flow through the vein, slower moving cells and other blood elements accumulate on the venous valves, creating a stationary blood clot, or thrombus, blocking the blood flow in the vein. When the thrombus breaks free of the valve leaflet, it is then called an embolus, and travels toward the heart and lungs. The last section of the animation shows the embolus lodging in the lung tissue to form a potentially life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Item #ANIM068
